You weren't sure what attracted you to Kurt at first - - whether it was his apparent innocence despite his looks, or the child-like wonder he displayed for the rest of the mutants he knew, and what they were capable of. Or maybe it was because of how kind he was, always shy, but willing to help when no one else was even there to offer.

No matter what it was, it was clear to the people around you that you and Kurt seemed to click. You had always been friendly, and your long time mates weren't exactly surprised when you took him under your wing when he first arrived at the school.

You were the one to show him around, and help him get acclimatized to not only his new life in America, but also being an average teen. You brought him to hang out with your friends, who (though, quite overwhelming for Kurt in the beginning) embraced him just like they would anyone else. They knew what it was like to be ridiculed based on a mutation, so they weren't exactly the people to tease him about his appearance - - excluding the occasional blueberry related jab from Scott.

The thing was, however, that Kurt was the kind of guy that tended to step on people's toes. Not intentionally, of course - - but that didn't matter either way. While he could teleport, he was also prone to tripping, and knocking things over. It wouldn't abnormal to hear a bang, and a crash, and Kurt's German accent yelling, 'sorry'. That meant that a lot of people weren't necessarily annoyed with him, but were weary of the ruckus he could cause.

No one was more aware of that than your animals.

The reason you'd attended Charles Xaviers' school was because of your familiars. As someone who's mutation was with a telepathic and empathic link to animals, many of them were drawn to you in a way that either a) couldn't be explained at a normal school, or b) wasn't even viable because of the safety of the students and the animals.

While you had particular animals that stuck around, such as your starling bird, your deer, your cat, and your wolf - - wild animals were much more unpredictable. If you were in a position where you felt helpless, sad or vulnerable (anything intense, really), it wouldn't be unusual for the animals in the area to flock to you. Xavier's school was one of the only places where those animals could be taken away, or made to leave safely. Also, you had help from Charles and Hank to train your technique, and allow yourself to have more control over it.

For almost a year, you'd never attracted any unwanted visitors - - and it felt good to know that you weren't putting anyone in danger. Don't get it wrong: you loved all the animals and creatures you interacted with (even if some of them were hard to deal with) - - but a few of them weren't exactly convenient to keep around.

Sometimes you would go into the large garden, far on the outskirts where you knew no one was likely to come. Sometimes Charles would let you venture into the garden with the supervision of a teacher. You could sit between the long grass, and allow your friends to approach, with no fear of anything happening.

That's how Kurt met you, originally. He saw you like a picture - - a frame from a movie about royalty, and fantasy. Like the pages of a novel his mother used to read him. Your hair was glowing in the sunlight, a glimmering smile on your face as you spoke aloud to the bird perched on your finger. It tilted its head at you, twittering back as it fluttered its crimson wings.

Resting with its head in your lap was a doe, who unknown to him, was a friend that traveled with you mostly everywhere. Its ears twitched as you let out a light laugh in reply to your bird friend, pausing the way your hand ran along the deer's brown and white dappled fur.

He was stuck to his place, utterly confused by the sight before him, rubbing at his eyes with balled fists to see if he was dreaming. Seeming not, because when he peered back, he began to notice more and more creatures the longer he looked.

Two rabbits bounding through the tall foliage around you, a porcupine hidden in the shade of a blueberry bush, two skunks closer to his right, and what must have been hundreds of different birds amongst the trees surrounding the clearing where you sat.

His curiosity must have gotten the best of him, because he took a slight step forward, holding his breath as nothing seemed to be disturbed. As soon as he took his next, his boots cracked a twig underneath their soles, alerting seemingly all of you to his presence. He'd never had so many eyes on him, all unblinking as they studied what his next moves would be. If he thought he was frozen before, he didn't know what to do then - - especially when your gaze studied him just as your animals did. His heart was thumping away in his chest and he hoped none of you could hear it.

From behind the trunk of the tree he stood beside, slinked a grey wolf, his thick coat shaking in the sunlight as he moved across the ground, enpraching on Kurt with a snarl. The sound rumbled from the back of its throat, and all he could do was look back to you for help - - stunned as to how he'd ended up in a situation like he was, his heart in his throat. It was just his luck, really.

The creature was huge - - taller than his waist at the very least. And he knew he could teleport at any point, but it wasn't like that made him enjoy it any more.

"I-I'm sorry," He squeaked out, hands up in surrender, "I'll just go."

But then, your expression changed in a way that almost made him sigh in relief. He saw your smile return, just as glowing and beautiful as before.

"It's okay, he's a friend," You spoke, and your voice sounded warm, and strangely just how he expected it to.

He didn't know if you were talking to him about the wolf, or the wolf about him. Whatever it was, the animal seemed to back off slightly - - but still never let his eyes leave Kurt, meandering towards you so that he could sit by your knee. The other creatures resumed their movements, too - - though uncertain of the new visitor.

Belatedly, he wondered how you could even have such a predator near your others, without having it attack them. But you seemed to have a strange control over them - - almost a calming influence to the point where they saw you, and all the others as family. A pack, almost.

"Sorry about that," You told him, features gentle as you moved your starling from his perch on your finger, to you shoulder. He seemed to settle by your neck, chirping slightly amongst the noise of the other birds. "He can get protective," You admitted, a certain guilt in your tone.

Despite being the one that was scared beyond his mind not moments before, there was something in him that immediately wanted to take that negative feeling away from you. "I-It's . . . it's okay," He admitted, trying for a slight smile that managed to come off more charming that he perhaps intended. "What's his name?" He asked curiously, finally feeling okay enough to take a shaky step forward.

"Well, I can't really explain what he's reffered to as by other wolves," You explained, looking over at your large companion, where he breathed slowly, stretched out amongst the grass and weeds. "But around people, I call him Lucky," You explained, amusement in your voice as he perked his head at you saying his name.

Despite himself, Kurt laughed at the peculiar title for the large canine. He supposed that having a wolf probably was similar to a dog - - but your pet was admittedly quite a lot scarier.

"I'm (Y/N) (L/N), it's nice to meet you," You added, introducing yourself as you looked up at the mutant boy, watching his tail curl around his ankle as spoke to you. There was something about him that you found strangely endearing. Something that you didn't often have with other people. You'd always been more of an animal person - - of course. Maybe it had to do with his slight fauna like appearance: his pointed ears, his layer of short blue fur, and his yellow irises that glinted in the light.

"I'm Kurt Wagner."

___________

In the beginning, they were weary of him. And it didn't help when the two of you started hanging out more. Not only did the get spooked by him all the time, but they where often stand-offish around him. On that particular day, Kurt was telling you how interesting he thought your mutation was. Very rarely were you away from all of your familiars, but this was one of those times, since you were in the dining hall (which was one of the few places you never took your animals).

"I think it's r-really, quite interesting," He admitted, ducking his head because he could never meet your eyes when he complimented you, "Animals have never really liked me. I think it's because they don't know. . ." He paused like he was struggling to find the right words to say, "It's like they don't know what I am. . ."

"They're just scared of the unfamiliar. . ." You assured him, empathy in your gaze that he couldn't see until he looked up. You'd always admired the strange and unique colour of his eyes, but he wasn't really the kind of person to hold eye-contact for too long.

"Are you sure they just don't hate me?" Kurt asked, slight humour in his tone, but you knew he was still worried either way.

He'd been around for a while. Enough for your friends to totally accept him as a part of the group - - but apparently not long enough for you animals to do the same. You knew he was insecure about it, but you wanted him to know that it wasn't because he was any worse than anyone else.

"Of course! Oh, c'mon, Kurt - -" You reached to place your hand on top of his unfamiliar blue one, "You're the gentlest guy I know. As long as you don't go around scaring them, they'll warm up to you. Okay?" You asked, your tone perhaps more serious than he expected. And it was true: despite his clumsiness - - he was always so soft to you.

Despite flustering at your touch, he asked in a worried tone, "Are you sure?"

"Yes, Kurt. I'm sure, " You promised, squeezing his hand, "Do you want to try and meet a few of them?"

The idea made him feel nervous almost immediately. Or maybe it was the way you were still watching him with an expectant gaze - - because you really seemed to care about him. And he couldn't turn you down. Not for a second.

Especially when he knew it was something that important to you.

"Uh, sure. But make sure they're the small, cute ones," He smiled anxiously, and you chuckled in reply.

_____________

You decided to start off with the herbivores, in light of Kurt's anxiousness. Except for your friendly cat (who was most definetly a hunter), who had almost immediately warmed up to him once he hung around. Kurt was still too terrified to pet him, simply watching the long haired main coone from afar - - stiffening up when it rubbed up against his pants leg.

He refused to believe you when you said that was a good sign, but you just laughed a little, and scooped the large feline up in your arms. He didn't protest as you held him like a baby, scratching under his chin as he purred loudly.

Kurt was amazed by how easy it was for you, reaching a hand out gingerly so that he could replace your fingers with his. The feline didn't seem to mind one bit - - and you couldn't help but smile when Kurt looked up at you excitedly, grinning triumphantly that he had gained the courage to pet him.

Next, you got him to sit with you on the ground, gathering all of the young, unemposing creatures from the surrounded area by using your mutation. The first to arrive were a few squirrels, and your ferret that he'd recognized to have been around you before.

Soon, the latter of the creatures was bounding up to join you and Kurt, tumbling in the grass in front of you. You let out a little laugh, reaching down to scratch him head and he scampered to his feet. The family of rodents approached slower, eyeing Kurt up like he'd spontaneously combust at any moment.

Your ferret, however, was sniffing at him, exploring around his perimeter as the boy looked down at it with a small, unsure smile.

"It's okay, little guy," You whispered to your furry friend, watching as his little nose twitched, and he placed his front paws on Kurt's leg. He sniffed around, ears alert for a moment, before he was jumping up into his lap and curling into a ball. He slid into the gaps where he could bring his head in the crook of Kurt's knee. The boy glanced up at you while beaming, seeking your assurance and attention. His eyes only seemed to light up further, when he noticed how happy it made you.

"See! I knew they'd like you just as much as I do - -" You began to speak, but cut yourself off when you realized how your words had come across. Almost immediately, your cheeks filled with a pink hue that Kurt couldn't help but admire.

"You like me?" He asked, seemingly shocked as his lips parted. His heart began to thump at the idea. Kurt had thought you were kind, and beautiful - - but never did he think you'd ever give him the light of day for some reason. You were ethereal, and really powerful, and way out of his league.

"Well, I didn't mean - -" You stopped yourself again. It didn't matter what you'd meant. It was true. You did really think you liked Kurt. "Kind of. . . yeah," You admitted, voice suddenly soft as you looked away from Kurt. A baby squirrel approached you, causing the creature in his lap to perk up. The two looked at each other for a moment, before the ferret was bolting after the smaller rodent.

Kurt wondered if he should be afraid for the squirrel, but momentarily shook that away when he saw you smiling and laughing at how they played - - your words finally processing in his brain.

"Oh," He didn't quite know what to say in reply - - but he was glad that there was no such thing as blushing when he had blue skin.

"It's okay if you don't like me back," You whispered, playing with your fingers that lay in your lap.

He didn't say anything, instead - - he moved to sit closer to you, reaching a hand out to take your hand like you'd done to him before.

You peered up at him, eyes warm and expectant, and absolutely breathtaking to him.

"But I do," He said, finally.

You immediately felt your face become warm, features splitting into an involuntary smile as you replied: "Oh."

There was a moment where the two of you looked at each other, cherishing the little time you had together in between the rush of your lives at school, and as X-men. You were as bare as you could be: vulnerable without a creature attached to you, but happy to have Kurt there instead. Happy that Kurt wanted to be with you, too, as your belly filled with butterflies.

"Can I kiss you?" He blurted, having the audacity to act shy once he'd said it.

You chuckled slightly at his bashful demeanor, but nodded your head anyways. Kurt seemed surprised by your answer, but it didn't take long for him to close the gap between the two of you. His lips pressed to yours, and you shared a slow, gentle kiss. It sent your head spinning anyways, and you could feel his tender grip holding either side of your face.

In that moment, you couldn't care less about all the animals that felt your surge in energy - - creatures alerted within a couple miles radius of your location. You knew you'd get an exasperated Charles because of it, but for once, you told yourself that you could deal with all of that later.

Right then, you had Kurt's affection to enjoy.
