Chapter eight

Harper felt a sharp pain as she hastily got to her feet, feeling a flush rise in her cheeks as faces turned to look at her. She waited until the gazes had shifted from her, before taking in her new surroundings. The room was completely blank, no windows, no doors, other than the one from which she came and the room was empty of people other than herself and three others. One of them sported a smirk and a Aun badge that all those who worked for the government were given, the other two, haughty expressions were upon their faces.

She tried to arrange her features so that they portrayed nothing of the thoughts just encountered.

They were back.

They were back. They were being tested to see if they were part of Them.

The woman who bore a smirk started to speak, something about the tests, but Harper's mind was elsewhere. When the woman stopped talking she walked around the room, hands running around the wall. Harper jolted out of her thoughts, why was she doing that? The answer soon became clear as the wall furthest from the door started to move, to reveal a hidden room. In this room a large machine lurked, it was completely black with three white panels sticking out of it.

Once again Harper was left wishing she had listened. The two with haughty expressions walked into the room, she followed. She saw as they placed a finger onto a panel. One of them spotted Harpers expression and gave her a gentle nudge, their expression fading to reveal a far friendlier one and signalled watch. They placed a finger in the middle of their panel and nodded to Harper's one. Harper raised a slightly shaking finger and rested it on the panel, to feel a vibration pass through her finger. She gave them a grateful smile. A grim smile was upon their lips, as though to say,

Let the testing begin.
