Chapter Thirty-Nine: Four Months
Play Hymn for the Missing by Red
(Bold and itallic are the lyrics of the song above.)
It's been four months since (Y/N) Todoroki fell into a coma. The world is terrified. They can't suffer from another loss of a Symbol of Peace. Today, the entire Todoroki family stands around their family member as she sleeps. Shoto holds his sister's right hand, while Fuyumi holds her left. Rei and Enji haven't spoken a word to each other, but inside the former number one hero's head, he's cursing. He promised his daughter that he'd talk to Rei and try to patch up the things that he's done wrong in his life.
The doctors forewarned the family that (Y/N) may not come out of the coma this time. Her body has been slowly breaking down because of the overuse of her quirk. And with her respiratory system damaged, if she does wake up, life could be totally different. She may have to resign from being the number one hero, or from being the Symbol of Peace entirely.
"Hey Fuyumi, wanna go test some of the hospital food?" Natsuo suddenly asks.
"Huh?" his sister replies, "Sure."
The two siblings leave abruptly, leaving Enji, Rei, and Shoto with (Y/N)'s sleeping state.
"I'm sorry, Rei.." Enji finally mutters, earning a confused glance from the woman, "I put you and the kids through hell. If- if I had've treated (Y/N) better, the clone that came after her wouldn't exist. It's my fault she's like this." Shoto and Rei give each other a confused glance at the man as he begins to break down into tears.
"Enji, that's all in the past now." Rei says, surprising everyone, "All of us have done terrible things. I think the copy of (Y/N) would've come after her anyway. You can't change that now. I'm sure our daughter will wake up." She sighs, "She has to."
The man nods slowly, not pushing his luck, "I'm going to go talk with the doctors." As he walks off, Rei follows without a word. She smiles at him reassuringly, leaving Shoto with his sister.
Are you afraid?
Are you searching for me?
Shoto stares at his sister's sleeping frame tiredly. For the four months that she's been here, he's barely slept. He wants to be the first thing that (Y/N) see's when she wakes up. The rest of class 1-A and some of the citizens that (Y/N) saved in her time of being a hero, as well as some other heroes have come to visit. They were all sad not to see her awake, though.
I had to stay.
Now I'm reaching for you.
"Sis, if you can hear me, you have to wake up." He whispers, feeling tears begin to well in his eyes, "This world needs you, you're our Symbol of Peace. I love you, (Y/N). Please wake up, do it for me. Do it for Kirishima and Bakugo. Do it for Izuku. You love them, don't you?" He chokes up on his words and breaks down beside his sister.
He freezes when her hand clenches his, but upon looking at her face, he can easily tell that she's still in her coma. But in a way, she's present in the moment. He slightly smiles and lays his head down beside her, slowly falling asleep to her breathing.
Will you wait?
Will I see you again?
When his eyes open again, (Y/N)'s are still closed. He sighs, and goes to yawn, but the action is interrupted when Katsuki, Kirishima, and Midoryia enter the hospital room. The three boys look terrified. Kirishima seems to be overtired, while Katsuki and Midoryia have most likely been crying. The green-haired boy runs to his boyfriend side, and gives him a long hug.
"How is she?" Kirishima asks, "It seems like forever since I've last seen her."
"She's still in a coma, obviously, shitty-hair." Katsuki replies, crossing his arms.
Shoto sighs, "She is. The doctors still are telling us that even if she does wake up, her respiratory system has been so damaged that it may not heal the same way. Living will be hell on earth. Her body was slowly breaking down with her overusing her quirk. She may not even come out of this."
You took it with you when you left. These scars are just a trace.
The four stare at their classmate, a sad mood surrounding them. Eventually, Kirishima and Midoryia begin to tell Shoto about their day at school. Ever since (Y/N) fell into a coma, Shoto has been taking more days off to see her. He wants to be there as much as long as he can each day. If he doesn't, what if she wakes up with no one there to greet her? Or what if she dies without him being able to say goodbye?
Now it wanders lost and wounded, this heart that I misplaced.
"Guys, I think something's wrong." Katsuki suddenly says.
"What do you mean, Kacchan?" Midoryia asks, "Of course there's something wrong, (Y/N) hasn't woken up." The last four words of his sentence are obviously coated with venom.
"Not that." The boy responds, pointing.
The other boys follow his finger. It's pointing to the monitor that's attached to (Y/N). The heart is beating irregularly. Shoto's eyes widen in fear, and he rushes out to the hallway.
"Nurse?! Someone, anyone?!" He yells, hoping to catch someone's attention.
"Yes?!" One of the nurses reply, approaching him from another patient's room.
"M-My sister, her heart is-"
(Y/N)'s brother is cut off as Midoryia suddenly screams. Shoto peaks back inside to see that his sister is jittering on the hospital bed. The nurse squeaks past him and immediately drops the clipboard she was holding. She rushes over and checks the monitor, as well as the girl, and concludes that (Y/N) has gone into cardiac arrest.
She presses a button near the door, "We have code blue in room number 2005! All available personnel need to be down here!"
Within seconds, other nurses and doctors flood the hospital room. In the process, Shoto and his classmates are kicked out.
"Don't die on us!" Katsuki yells as the nurse pushes them out the door.
"We'll make sure that she doesn't, sir." she says, "Go wait in the waiting room, we'll come talk to you when this is over."
Reluctantly, the boys listen.
Now I'm reaching for you.
Will you wait?
Will you wait?
Will I see you again?
Midoryia and Shoto hug each other in the waiting room, while Katsuki and Kirishima close their eyes, hoping for the best. All of their hearts are pounding loud enough that their thoughts get drowned out by the noise.
After a painful fifteen minutes, the nurse that first noticed (Y/N) going to a cardiac arrest approaches the four boys. Her face is hard to read, not showing sadness, nor happiness.
"(Y/N) is stable." She says bluntly, "It seems her wounds have finally started to stitch together properly. If she manages to wake up, life will still be tough, but she can live. If you want to be with her, head back to her room."
As the woman walks off, Shoto gets a feeling. Not like a feeling that something is wrong, but a feeling that something is different. When the four enter the room, Shoto is first. He stares at the ground for a few moments, almost scared to look up and see that his sister is still asleep. He takes a deep breath, and glances up.

(Y/N) is sitting up, staring out the nearby window. The four boys stand at the doorway in shock and silence. None of them know what to do or say to the hero.
"(Y/N)?" Shoto finally whispers, secretly pinching himself on his left side to check if this moment is a dream or not.
The (H/C)-haired girl turns, "Oh, good morning Sho!"
It's almost as if, she doesn't know how long it's been.
"How long have you been awake?" Midoryia asks, as the other two boys also snap out of their frozen state.
"Well, when I woke up, no one was here?" She replies, "I only remember getting stabbed by my clone. Wait, how long has it been?"
"Four months." Katsuki replies plainly, crossing his arms, "You gave us a big scare."
"Four months?" (Y/N) repeats, "Please tell me there were no large villain attacks? Does the public know about my clone? Do they know I've been here for four months?!"
"Calm down, (Y/N)." Kirishima says softly, "Yes, they know that you're here. Instead of letting the info of your imposter leak out, Mr. Aizawa and the other heroes who knew made up a situation with Himiko Toga. Saying that you fought her and got stabbed in the process. The villain was apprehended and the press stopped asking questions. The world will be happy to hear you're awake now though."
Suddenly, Shoto leaps over and hugs his sister tightly, "I missed you, so much.."
The girl hugs him back, but of course, she doesn't fully understand what's going on.
"I-I'll go get the doctor." Midoryia mutters, leaving.
Soon enough, after telling their tired classmate about the few months at UA high, Midoryia enters with a doctor and two nurses following him. Eventually, Rei, Natsuo, Fuyumi, and Enji enter the hospital room behind the staff. There's a brief reuinion, before the doctor and nurses ask the family and friends to step out for a moment.
"So, Miss Todoroki," the doctor begins, "are you feeling anything unusual? Can you breathe okay?"
"Yes, I can breathe." the girl replies, "I feel fine, other than feeling groggy."
"That's great." one of the nurses smile, "We were worried that you might not be able to breathe correctly when you woke up."
"You had two broken ribs, a shattered collarbone, and the hole in your stomach that damaged your respiratory system badly." the other nurse finishes, "Over the past four months, those bones have healed, but your respiratory system has still been needing aid so you could breathe."
A few tests are done on the girl. The doctors and nurses make sure that the hero is healthy enough to get up and leave, and possibly start going back to UA. Later, (Y/N) has fallen asleep due to the number of tests done on her, her family and her classmates have headed home.
Quickly, the press and news broadcasts started touching on Elementia's recovery. Some speculated that the fight with Himiko Toga was a hoax, since there were no citizens to witness it. Some were wondering if the hero was using that fight to resign as the Symbol of Peace. Thankfully, Aizawa and the other UA teachers that 'witnessed' the fight, fight against the accusations and clear the number one hero's name.
The next day, (Y/N) is allowed to go home, and attend school.
