Chapter Seventeen: Sir Nighteye

(Y/N) Todoroki

"You want me to WHAT!?"

"I want you to come meet Sir Nighteye!"

I stand in front of Midoryia and Togata, the blonde-haired boy has asked if I would like to meet Nighteye, the pro hero that worked under All Might.

    "I guess?" I reply.

"Great!" Togata yells, turning away while grabbing Midoryia and I's arms, "Then let's go talk to All Might!"

Soon now the three of us sit on a couch in front of the former pro hero.

"I could introduce Midoryia and Todoroki to Sir, right?" Togata asks, wrapping his arms around us. "Wait, why do you need me to cushion the exchange? He'd be thrilled to hear from you personally. He's been watching your videos."

All Might sighs, "Honestly, I'm too ashamed to show him my face. In the end, things turned out exactly as he forewarned they would."

Midoryia's face contorts, and even though I sped through the manga because I love to watch more than read, I remember this moment. Togata was originally going to earn the power of one for all, and Nighteye saw that All Might was going to die eventually.

"Anyways, what do you think of these two?" All Might asks.

"Well, Midoryia what kind of hero do you want to be?" Togata asks, I smile at the green-haired boy.

"I want to help with a smile, no matter the need, and no matter how many. Never giving others a reason to worry, winning and saving the day, beyond any doubt. I want to be the greatest hero. And that's why I have to get stronger." Midoryia replies.

"And Todoroki, what kind of hero do you want to be?"

What kind of a hero do I want to be? I was only following the storyline up until now. I was trying to get home. Who do I want to be here? Do I want to continue on this path or should I just..no.

"I want to be the kind of hero that makes sure everyone is okay." I respond, "I want to be the hero who saves the day, someone who everyone can depend on. I want to be a great hero as well."

Togata chuckles, "You both have crazy goals, but I have no reason to refuse so okay!"

"Oh my god, thank you!" Midoryia squeals.

"I think sir might like you both anyways." the boy responds.

When the weekend came, Midoryia and I raced out of the dorm rooms and headed to the train station. We catch our train to Sir Nighteye's offices, and arrive an hour later.

"Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Sir's got very strict standards." Togata says, as the three of us are about to enter the building.

"I'm well aware." Midoryia replies, "He's a famously stoic hero who's no only strict with others, but also with himself, and it shows in his work. That sharp glance can startle me even just from watching him through a screen."

The blonde boy beside us chuckles, "He can be like that. But Sir's actually got another face that he doesn't show the media. So if you two don't wanna get turned away at the door..then sometime between when you first meet and when you're finished talking. You've gotta make him laugh at least once."

I giggle at Midoryia's confused face.

"Sure, Sir looks like a grumpy-puss but despite that, or maybe because of it, he respects humor above everything else. Introducing you is all I can do. It's Sir who'll decide whether he can use you two or not. I wanna help but, the only way is for you to get Sir to acknowledge you by your own efforts." Togata continues, as we walk through the halls of the building.

When the three of us finally open the door, we're met with a very..different picture. Nighteye is 'torturing' Bubblegirl by tickling her with a device named 'Tickle Hell'.

Slowly, the man turns to stare at Midoryia and I.

    HE'S SO SCARY.

Midoryia quickly puts on his All Might' face, but Sir Nighteye does not laugh.

"Are you mocking All Might?" He hisses.

    I swallow, "Oh boy."

"What do you mean by that face you're pulling?" Nighteye continues, approaching Midoryia. "It must be a shot aimed at the fact I was once All Might's sidekick."

He grabs the green-haired boy's face, moving it around, "All Might doesn't have a wrinkle here! The wrinkles around his eyes are around 0.6 centimeters, and 0.8 centimeters during his silver age. In this day and age, even nonlicensed All Might merchandise are made with the differences between his different appearances throughout the ages in mind."

He turns away, "I am quite displeased, you may leave now."

Midoryia takes a breath, "Do you know of the vinegar suicide incident?"

    Sir Nighteye stops.

"It refers to the incident when a middle school student with a quirk that could alter liquid substances nearly drown in a river spurring All Might to the rescue. The drowning kid, in a panic, inadvertently changes the river into vinegar, which caused All Might's eyes to sting when he jumped in. The smile he flashed, his eyes screwed shut all the while, as he did the post-rescue interview is the moment I chose for the funny face!"

"Of course I know of it. It was before my time with him. A special episode of 'looking back' on NHA tv touched on it briefly."

Midoryia smiles, "Oh yeah, that's the one! There was no villain in that incident, and compared to his other works, it's nothing spectacular. It doesn't even show up on fansites very much, but I really like it. Especially what he said after the kid thanked him, it was so witty."

Nighteye quotes the former hero, "I should be thanking you for making my skin look ten years younger."

The green-haired boy squeals, "Yeah that's the line, the skin line!"

Sir Nighteye stares daggers into him, "Why you insolent..are you testing me?"

The two fanboys continue on for a few moments, until Sir Nighteye finally sits down at his desk.

"So you both wish to intern at my agency, in order to become stronger than you are at present." He says, "The moment I stamp my seal of approval on your school contract printouts, it goes into effect. This is no internship that you see with any normal company where it ends within a week. You'd be working with us for more than a months at the very least, with compensation, naturally. For a freshman like you two, whose class workload is relatively heavy, the amount of time you'll need to take off from lessons will of course increase. And you won't be able to move at the same pace as all of your peers in class."

"If we tried to move forward at the same pace as everyone, we'd never reach the top." I reply, smiling.

Then, I leaned over and whispered into Midoryia's ear, "he's going to miss the printouts."

"Huh, (Y/N) what are you talking about-"

The green-haired boy is cut off as Sir Nighteye slams the stamp down and misses the paper, just as I said.

"She's right, I have no intention of stamping it." Nighteye replies, "At least, not your's."

Quickly, the hero stamps on my printout, but not Midoryia's.

"Huh?" Midoryia asks, "Why not me?"

Sir Nighteye stares daggers into him, "She can control her quirk and she knows how to pace herself. She would be a great addition to my agency. While you on the other hand, you used your quirk recklessly in the Sports Festival. I also understand full well that there is indeed merit in you working here, for you. But what merit is there for me in hiring you. How, exactly, do I profit from accepting you into our fold without delay? How do I profit from an office with two sidekicks, and now two interns? What do you have to contribute to society? How would you be a benefit to others? If you want me to acknowledge you, you must show. All Might showed his worth through his power and his humor. He put fear into the hearts of criminals and hope into the hearts of the people. That is why the public took him with open arms. What advantages would you give my agency? I'd appreciate it if you tried to show me not with words, but with actions."

He stands up from his desk, "So you have three minutes, three minutes to take this seal from my hands. If you wish to engage in heroics under my supervision..then stamp the paper yourself."

I smile at Midoryia's confused face, as Nighteye continues.

"You can say I'm giving you, who hasn't the slightest shred of a sense of humor, a rare chance. What do you say? Am I not merciful?" He turns back to us, "Mirio, Bubblegirl, (Y/N), leave us."

So the three of us exit the office.

"Did you have some kind of practical skill test like that too, Mirio?" Bubblegirl asks, the boy shakes his head.

"Sir personally chose me, so nope, I didn't."

"Aaagh, he's taken a liking to both of you, dang it!" the girl giggles, playfully punching our shoulders.

"Except it's not looking good for Midoryia, against Sir's quirk, accomplishing those conditions is virtually impossible." Togata continues.

"Oh Midoryia will be fine." I reply, giggling.

Togata's face contorts, "And how do you know that?"

I chuckle, "I can't see into the future, and I'll go more in depth later, but for now, I'll just say that Midoryia honors All Might so much that even though he doesn't get the stamp from Sir Nighteye, he avoids all of the All Might merchandise and that gets him in."

Bubblegirl and Togata stare at me, "Huh!?"

I take the three minutes that Midoryia is attempting to get the stamp from Sir Nighteye to explain when I was in the 'real world' and that they are an anime and manga.

"Then let's see!" Togata yells, as we open the doors.

I can hear a slight chuckle from Sir as we open the doors, "Mirio, he's hired."

"All right, awesome!" the boy replies.

Midoryia, on the other hand, is shocked, "What? But I couldn't even pass your test!"

Nighteye begins to fix the books that Midoyia threw, "I believe I told you to take the seal and stamp the paper yourself, but I never said if you couldn't, I wouldn't hire you."

The next day, our first day as Sir Nighteye's interns came.
