Chapter 20
It was late by the time Cyrus stopped the car outside of the storage locker facility in Jenks, but he didn't care. He knew the owner of the place, and it didn't matter what time it was—if he needed to get into his locker, he'd get in. Theo sat silently beside him. His arms were no longer crossed in silent fury, but from the way his chin tilted up a little higher than normal, Cyrus knew he was still pissed. He always tilted his head up like that when he was angry, usually when he was angry at Cyrus. As he had every right to be. They hadn't spoken a word the whole silent drive, and whether Theo even knew where they were or not, he had no idea. Cyrus sighed and opened his car door.
"Come on," he said. Theo followed him, asking no questions, but carefully observing the way a good detective would. Cyrus opened the door to locker sixty seven and closed it behind them, unconsciously doing his usual scan for any changes since his last visit. As usual, there were none. He watched as Theo took in the space. The safes lining the sides, the desk at the back. His eyes lingered on the photo tucked in the corner.
"What is this place?" Theo finally asked.
"This..." Cyrus struggled with a way to explain it. "This is everything, The. Literally all the evidence you would need to put every Hunters member behind bars is right here." He tapped one of the safes. "Each one of these? Stuffed to the brim with cash. All different denominations, but that's not the point. Those filing cabinets? They've got the books. I keep a record of everybody in the gang, and how much I've paid them. The map's got every one of our safehouses, places where our drug shipments come in, you name it. The only two things missing on there are the Headquarters and our home." Cyrus turned to his husband, only to find Theo staring back at him with wide eyes. "The only person besides me that knows this locker even exists is the guy who runs the warehouse. The only two people who know what's in here are you and me. If you really wanted to, you could take all of this to the police. Take it to Spiro, say you caught a lead by chance. Take us all down by the studs, and lock every guy I've got in max security prison for the rest of their lives. It'd be the biggest bust the state's ever seen, but I know you won't do it. I trust you to not do that."
"How do I know you're not lying?" Theo questioned. Cyrus gestured towards the space.
"Try me. I've got the keys to the cabinets right here if you want to see the books. Open a safe. The combinations are all just your birthday, anyways." Theo raised an eyebrow and Cyrus shrugged. "Had to make it something nobody would guess, not that anyone could find this. Hell, even Benny has no idea this place exists."
"You wouldn't even tell Benny about this? Why?" He shrugged again.
"Best friends and business partners can betray you too easily," Cyrus said. "Or maybe I've just seen too many movies."
"Husbands can betray you just as easily too," Theo warned.
"Not husbands like you." Cyrus looked at him. "I trust you, Theo. More than I've ever trusted anyone in my whole life. And I love you more than I know what to do with. So maybe sometimes I lose my head a little bit, but that's only because a part of me knows that being with you is the most dangerous part of my life, and it's the only part I refuse to give up." He shuffled his feet. "You're the only person who's got power over me."
"But I'd never use that against you,"
"I know." Cyrus smiled. "And that's why I love you." Theo smiled softly and looked around the locker. He had to give Cyrus credit. It was a damn good way to show him he trusted him, and the speech hadn't been that bad either. That part hadn't surprised him, though. His husband had always had a way with words. He sighed. Part of him still wanted to be pissed, to be absolutely furious, but what was the point? The locker may have been proof of the Hunters, but it was also proof of every strain they already had in their relationship. There was no point to trying to make things worse when they were already knee deep in the gang trenches.
"If you ever," Theo started. "Point a gun at me like that again, Cyrus, I swear to God-"
"Never." Cyrus replied without hesitation, regret dropping into his green eyes. "That move has already flown up the charts to one of the top three worst mistakes I've ever made in my life. I don't know why I did it, I was just- I was so mad and-"
"And gangsters pull guns on each other when they're angry," Theo finished.
"Not my kind of gangster."
"It's an instinct. Just not one I would like to see again."
"You won't," Cyrus promised.
"Good." Theo looked around the locker again, his eyes settling on one of the safes. Stuffed to the brim with cash, Cyrus had said. They were pretty big safes... "Okay, I have to know," He said. "How much money is even in here?"
"Uh, I lost count at a million." Cyrus admitted. "But here, check this out." He opened one of the safes, swinging the door open to reveal the cash. "Nothing but hundreds."
"Holy fucking mother of shit," Theo swore, earning a laugh from Cyrus. "All real?"
"All real." Cyrus grinned cheekily. "I'm telling you, The. Being a gang leader pays a lot better than a cop."
"Yeah, no shit," Theo muttered.
"So," Cyrus said awkwardly. "Am I forgiven now?" Theo thought for a moment and then sighed.
"Alright, fine," He agreed. "But if you've got this much cash, you really should give Benny a fucking raise."
"He already gets paid twice as much as anybody else does." Theo scoffed.
"Good, he freaking earns it."
"You have no idea." Theo stared at the money, both of them falling silent. Money like that made one's mind run wild with its possibilities. It was like dreaming of what to do with your lottery winnings, only the money was right there staring you in the face, ripe for the taking.
"You know, with so much cash, we could run away," Theo said, his voice dropping to a whisper, as if he were afraid that someone would shut the idea down if they heard him say it. "Start over somewhere else. Change our names and leave all this gang and cop stuff behind us. Never look back." He smiled faintly. "That'd be nice."
"Not have to hide anything," Cyrus went on, knowing they had both dreamed about it at one point or another. "We could travel the world, go out for dinner. Hell, with this safe alone we could build a house wherever we wanted and not have to worry about anything anymore." He looked at his husband and grinned "I'm thinking a cabin somewhere quiet. Maybe get a couple of cats or something."
"Are you kidding? If we live in a cabin, we have to have a dog." Theo said.
"What, so all our shoes can get ripped to shreds? No thank you."
"Well what do you think is gonna happen to our curtains if we get a cat?"
"Curtains are cheaper to replace than shoes."
"That's just because you insist on wearing ones made with real leather." Cyrus shoved at him playfully.
"Leave me and my expensive shoes alone."
"Fine, but only if we get a dog."
"You're ridiculous... A small dog."
"Not too small though. If you get something the size of a chihuahua then we might as well just get a pet rat."
"I don't even know what a chihuahua is. Sounds like something you'd say when a hot guy walks by." Theo burst out laughing, and Cyrus thought it was the happiest sound he'd ever heard in this place.
"It'd be nice to live somewhere where the biggest issue is what kind of pet to get," Theo sighed.
"No more gangsters to worry about."
"No more cops hunting down your every move."
"No more lying to everyone we consider a friend just to stay safe." They looked at each other, and Theo knew Cyrus was seeing it just as clear as he was. A small house in some remote place where no one would ever find them. A Mossler more real than a blanket fort ever could be, and much more lasting. Somewhere no one had ever even heard the name Cyrus Mossberg before, let alone the Hunters. They'd have to lay low for a little while, just until police stopped looking for him, but after that, they'd stop searching. The Hunters would vanish and become old news. Cyrus would just be another random guy. They could be happier. Safer, in a place where they didn't have to worry or stress about everyone finding out. It sounded like heaven on Earth. It sounded like the life they thought they were going to have at one point, before life took its course and changed their plans.
But as a sadness crept into Cyrus's eyes, reality sunk in. As glorious as running away sounded, it was impossible. They weren't the dreaming teenagers they had been when they had met and fallen in love. They had made a life for themselves already, even if it wasn't all they wanted it to be. They had jobs here, roles to play, masks to wear. They still had cards to play where they were, and they couldn't just leave. Maybe one day, but not now. Not when Marcus was dead and the gangs wanted blood. Not with the FBI arriving in just two days. It was nice to dream in Mossler, but they always had to leave it eventually. They would run away together someday. They could silently promise each other that.
But not now.
"Isn't that what Romeo and Juliet tried to do?" Cyrus asked as Theo grabbed his hand, a quiet comfort as they realized their dreams would have to wait. "Run away together?"
"I think so," Theo forced a smile. "I didn't read it, but I thought they just wanted to be together."
"I get that." Cyrus sighed and shut the safe. "One day, The. One day it won't be like this."
"I know. Sometimes I just wished that 'one day' came faster."
"It's like tomorrow. We all keep wishing for it to come, and it never does."
"Well, sometimes hope for tomorrow is the only thing that keeps people going, especially when they can't change their today."
"You could change your today, if you wanted," Cyrus offered. He nodded towards the desk, the map with the safehouses. "This could all be yours if you wanted it. The second you ask, it's yours." Theo held his hand a little tighter, but he didn't look towards the desk, towards all the Hunters had to offer.
"I don't need it," He said, a quiet decline. "You're the only piece of the Hunters I need in my life."
"Alright," Cyrus sighed. "But if you ever change your mind, it'll be here."
"I know it will." Theo looked back at the locker door. "We should go home," Cyrus nodded and they headed out, locking the storage locker behind them.
"Hey, if we're Romeo and Juliet," He said. "Which one of us is which? Because I don't think I'm a Juliet." Theo shrugged and cracked a grin.
"Depends on the day." Cyrus burst out laughing.
