Prologue
***Why am I here? Just to post a prologue, no worries! You won't get more material for a few days, at least :p
Also, this chapter is gonna seem really AWKWARD. Don't worry, there are PLENTY OF WITNESSES to prove that NOTHING HAPPENS XD
And I picked a classic by the Backstreet Boys for this chapter. Jay and Nya's POVs will be songfics, while everyone else's will mostly just have the typical soundtrack/music cue..***
***(Skylor's POV)***
One week earlier - Beginning of May
***Music Cue***
Kai releases a contented sigh, and I can't help a smile.
"I told you you'd enjoy a couple's massage," I chuckle.
"Yeah, well, whatever. Man, I never realized my muscles got this tight from practice." He lets his arms hang off the side of the table limply.
"So you're hooked now?"
"Mm-hmm. These people give massages as good as yours."
I clear my throat, arching an eyebrow.
"Almost as good as yours," he adds, smirking. "I know you get a lot more pleasure out of rubbing my sore muscles than the staff here does. I mean, it must be enjoyable for anyone to be deemed worthy to give me a massage, but...it's extra enjoyable for you."
I roll my eyes. "Uh-huh. And why is that, Kai Smith?"
"Because you know that not only do you get to give me backrubs once in a while, you get to be my massage therapist for the rest of your life."
"The rest of your life?" I chuckle. "Even when you're old and wrinkly and not so sexy anymore?"
"Ooh. I'm sexy, huh?" He wiggles his eyebrows, his tanned face an expression of triumph, pride, and pleasure.
By golly, he's so handsome. And we both know I think that, but I almost never admit it. It's just kind of a flirty game we've always had - he tries to get me to admit he's hot, and I deprive him of that triumph.
"No," I blush. "I...uh..."
"Yes? I'm waiting, Skylor." His voice teases me.
I cough. "I...didn't mean...I...I meant to ask, uh, if you'd...you'd confirmed your choice for best man yet. You know, our wedding's in a month and a half." Words. I finally know how to use them.
"Pfft, you're changing the subject." His face flushes. "I..."
I immediately go on high alert. "Kai Smith, what are you hiding?" If he doesn't just tell me, I am so reading his mind.
"I'm not hiding anything," he argues. "I'm just searching for the best way to put this so you don't actually kill me."
"Kai," I growl. "If you don't tell me right now – "
"Okay, okay! Um, so...who all is coming to our wedding?"
I blink. "The guys? Nya? Seliel? Family friends of mine? A number of important people whom we're pretty much honor-bound to invite, given their connection to my business?" I inherited my dad's thriving noodle company after he went to prison about a year ago. Yay, me.
"Oh, right. Yeah."
"Kai," I say suspiciously. "Please tell me exactly what you're hiding."
"Fine." He swears. "You remember those invitations you asked me to send out last month?"
I know where this is going, and I don't like it. "Yes, Kai. Those would be our wedding invitations. Go on."
"Um, I just now realized that they might still be setting...in one of the blacksmith shop's cabinets."
"Kai!" I huff. "If it wasn't incredibly indecent for me to get off this table and kick you in the shins, I totally would." As it is, the bathrobe I'm wearing can be...rather revealing, and I don't really think a karate chop will make it stay in place.
"Well..."
"Kai!" I huff. "May I remind you that there are all kinds of friendly staff listening to our conversation right now?!"
"I didn't say anything!" he complains. "Gosh, Skylor!"
"Mm-hmm. We all know where that was going. Cut the innuendo, please."
He sighs. "Fine. I'll save it for later." He sends me a wink.
"Just don't save it for when your sister is in the car with us like last time. That comment you made last week was really inappropriate."
"I forgot she was there!" he defends himself.
"Mm-hmm. Well, now she can't forget."
"We're engaged, Skylor! You would be concerned if I didn't make comments like that."
"Would you want Jay making comments like that around your sister? When those two finally work things out, of course." They've been broken up for three months now.
Kai blanches. "Innuendo? Skylor, that – my – she's sixteen!"
"I'm sure you did plenty of that at sixteen." I smirk.
"I...Nya's not me!"
"That's a huge relief. I had you two totally mixed up, but you just cleared everything up for me." Cue the eye roll.
"Hey!" he frowns. "And stop talking like Jay and my sister are some perfect match, okay? They're broken up."
I chuckle. "You're blind if you don't know they still love each other."
"My sister's not in love! She's so little!"
"She's nearly seventeen. Besides, I don't think love knows a particular age at which to strike, just hormones." I hum happily as the massage therapist rubs my shoulders. "Kai, you know your sister's been reserved the past few months since she broke up with Jay. Don't you think she'd be happier if they were back together?"
"I wouldn't be happier."
"This isn't about you."
He harrumphs. "Whatever, Skye. I let Nya have a boyfriend in February, and she decided she was done with officially dating Jay after three days. I can only be glad she's levelheaded enough not to run after someone else."
"That's because she still likes him, Kai." I shake my head. He's so clueless.
"Then why did she break up with him?!" he asks.
"I don't know, Kai! What I do know is that they were – and would be – a good couple."
"I don't think so. They couldn't stay together for more than three days!"
"I'll prove it to you," I smirk. "Wanna bet that I can get your sister and Jay back together before our wedding?"
"What do you want to bet? Money? Date locations? What?"
"How about..." I tap my chin, then beam as the perfect idea comes to me. "First dance songs? Since we've been arguing about me wanting to play the Backstreet Boys and you wanting country music, why don't we let the winner of this bet pick?" And it will be me. I need my Nick Carter, especially at my wedding.
He whistles low, a smile tilting his lips. "Dang, girl. Are you playing risky?"
"Oh, I have this in the bag. I just have one condition."
"Which is?"
"You let me finish filling out and sending the wedding invitations."
He raises an eyebrow. "I know there's a catch to this, Skye." His forehead furrows. "I just haven't figured it out yet."
"I guess you'll just have to trust me, hmm?" I give him my most mysterious smile and bat my eyelashes.
His eyes deepen in tone. "Skylor, don't give me that face."
"Why?" I ask innocently.
"Because it makes me want to kiss you so bad," he says gruffly.
"Do you agree to let me finish the invitations yet?"
"I..." He suddenly pushes the massage therapist away, wrapping the towel that was draped over him securely around his waist.
Thank the First Spinjitzu Master for that. There are spa staff around everywhere. No need to flash somebody.
He slides off the massage table and makes a dive for my lips.
"Yes," he whispers. "Fine. You win."
And he proceeds to kiss me right in front of the massage therapy staff, placing either hand on my cheeks and bending down to reach my mouth. His touch takes my breath away, just like it has every time since I've known him.
"We have an audience," I murmur against his lips, crooking my elbows around his neck.
He pulls back just a little, brown eyes flashing against my green ones. "We..." His expression morphs to one of horror, then a cocky look he's mastered to hide when he's flustered. "We do, huh?"
"Yep." I can't take my gaze off his mouth.
"Then let's not disappoint," he whispers. He aims for my mouth again, and the world just dissolves into Kai. No spa, no massage.
And honestly, who cares about getting pampered when they could have...this?
***Okay, so you see how things looked awkward? But they weren't, promise! Lip action only. Skylor was wearing a robe. Kai's towel kept things appropriate and stayed in place throughout this whole scenario. There were STAFF watching.
I'm done LOL
Okay, thoughts on this? What do you think Skye's up to with those wedding invitations? ;)***
