When Jimmy Dumped Izzy

Jimmy leaned against the street lamp, massaging his forehead with one hand, holding his cigarette in the other. He'd had a horrible day. Juggling three jobs, school and a demanding girlfriend was not easy. Izzy was not a problem per se, but she still kept him from sleeping.
And he needed sleep. A lot of it. He wasn't sure how much more coffee his body could take. Just the thought of it made him want to throw up. His ears rang already from his tidal blood pressure.
I need a solution. A better schedule. Or maybe just to convince Izzy for once that he needed to catch up on sleep. Which was weirdly the hardest part. He could already see Izzy rolling her brown eyes at him and complaining that he was one weird teenage boy.
He wasn't. He was a completely normal, hormonal teenage boy, but even he couldn't live without resting. Or he could just tie her to the bed and go sleep on the couch...
"Yo, Jimmy."
Jimmy ashed his cigarette and turned to his friend Derek. The blond guy approached him, wringing his hands.
"Hey, Derek. What's up?"
"Eh, the usual." He looked from Jimmy to the school building behind him, his fingers still twitching with nerves.
Jimmy frowned and tossed his cigarette butt into a nearby trashcan. He wanted to take out another one, but changed his mind. He only had four left anyway. "Why are you so nervous?"
"Am not. Just--" He faltered and wrung his hands some more. His state of anxiety wasn't helping Jimmy's headache at all.
"Come on. You obviously came out here to talk to me." Hell, they were the only ones on the sidewalk. "So spill. If it's bad news, stalling won't miraculously turn it into good news."
"True, true," Derek said distractedly, his eyes once again darting towards the school building.
Jimmy waited for a few moments, focusing on the pattern of the pulse drumming in his temple. It almost sounded like music if he tried hard enough. Who needed an iPod when you had exhaustion? Exhaustion was free.
"The thing is, I've been hearing some rumors for a while," Derek finally said, lowering his hands. "I'm not one to spread rumors. They suck and it's what makes high school hell for many people. But I actually saw something. And I can't just sit by and not do anything about it."
Jimmy frowned. "Okay. What did you see?" Whatever it was, it already sounded way too overdramatic.
"You know I don't gossip. You know I don't exaggerate." He took a deep breath. "And you know I'm your friend. "
"Yes, I know. I trust you wouldn't come and bore me with some random shit." Jimmy was starting to get impatient and it only made his entire body tense painfully.
Darren took in a huge breath. "I saw Izzy and Tom together." He paused for a second before driving the knife home. "Kissing."
The pounding pulse in Jimmy's temple disappeared. Every sound in the world disappeared as he stared at his nervous friend. A sense of balance and peace settled inside him, but he knew it was nothing but the calm before the storm, only there for the fraction of a second it took his brain to process Derek's words.
Izzy. And Tom. His baby brother. Kissing.
It crashed. His back hit against the street lamp as his head pounded so hard, he was sure it would burst open. But that was nothing. The vertigo, the pressure on his skull, it was nothing compared to the pain in his chest, like a thousand hot knives stabbing his heart.
"Are you... are you sure?" His voice was weak, stuttering.
"Yeah." Derek bit his lip so hard, he drew blood. "I asked around. From credible sources. They've been at it for months."
At it. Izzy didn't do relationships without sex. Did that mean... Could he actually believe Derek? Because it wasn't even the issue of Izzy cheating on him. It was Tom. Tom would never do something like that to him. He knew how much Izzy meant to Jimmy, he knew...
Holy shit. Tom didn't know Izzy. He'd never introduced them. Which meant that this could actually--
Jimmy's eyes tried to find something else to focus on, to stop his brain from going over the possibility, from accepting it, because if he were completely honest, as much as he loved Izzy, he thought her capable of something like this.
His gaze finally found a suitable target. And the ground ran out from under his feet. On the roof of the school, a dark silhouette rose against the sky. And he was one hundred percent sure it was his brother.
With newfound energy, he sprinted towards the school. He wasn't going to let this happen.
☠☡☢
Tom hadn't known. Of course he hadn't. And Jimmy didn't find that surprising at all. He'd pulled his brother off the edge of the building, made sure he wouldn't try that again, pretended to understand and walked away.
Straight into a bottle of beer because he didn't understand shit. He knew he shouldn't drink. Knew that one beer was enough to bring him to his knees when he was so tired. But he wanted to pass out, wanted to forget. Wanted to die.
But he wouldn't, because he wasn't the type. He was the type who rationalized and came up with the best solution. So he'd just break it into pieces and solve the damn thing.
Question number one: did he believe Tom? Yes, he totally did. Because Tom would never lie to him. He never had and he never would. It was like a silent agreement between them.
Question number two: did he believe Izzy capable of doing something like that? The evidence was against her. She'd obviously known Tom was his brother. She'd said it with her own mouth. She'd also obviously cheated.
If he trusted Tom, the answer to this question was easy. But here came the heartbreaking part. For some godawful reason, he wasn't surprised. He knew Izzy, knew she had an insatiable, perverted side to her. He'd just been stupid enough to believe he could control it. That he was enough to cover all her needs. That she was satisfied.
She obviously wasn't and the monster had come out to play. But why Tom? Why his own brother? Despite their tumultuous relationship, Jimmy though Izzy loved him. She'd said so and he'd believed her.
Sure, their relationship was a little unconventional, but they were doing okay. All the normal couple things like helping each other out around the house, talking about their days, making decisions together. They'd moved in together. He actually thought they had a future.
Obviously not. Because when he slipped and loosened his grip on her, she slithered away and did her damage.
Question number three: should he have seen it coming?
Yes. He should have. From the day she'd made her move on him. It was flattering. She was popular and older and the fact that she wanted to hook up with him had stroked his ego. Especially because he barely had time to breathe. But they made it work somehow and what he'd taken as a fling turned into a relationship. Back then, he hadn't cared that she'd dumped her boyfriend for him.
He should've totally seen it coming. Know that she'd throw him away the moment he couldn't keep up, the moment she drained the last ounce of energy out of him. He was just too stupid in love to see it.
Question number four: what now? This one killed him.
Jimmy looked at the bottle in his hand. He couldn't just leave it like that. Not after she almost made Tom kill himself. Not after she traumatized him and destroyed their relationship. She had to pay.
But he was afraid the anger would fade and the pain would come and he'd fail. He'd let her destroy the tiny little pieces left of him.
Question number five: fix this now or fix it later?
The alcohol yelled fix it now and for once, he was going to listen. Fortunately, as he got to his feet, he realized he wasn't totally waisted. He could walk. And once he stepped outside, his mind cleared a little too. It blissfully chose to focus on keeping him vertical and coherent so he reached Izzy's place without obsessing over what he should say. It wasn't like he could plan in advance. She had always been unpredictable.
Right now included. It was noon. He hadn't expected to find her lying on her stomach on the bed, her chin propped up in her hands, swinging her feet. Wearing a lace bra and thong, garter straps and high heels. Reading Hustler magazine.
"What the hell are you doing? And where did you even get that?" Jimmy asked before he could help himself. But in the area of Internet porn, it was so weird to see a magazine.
"Hey, sugarplum." She tossed the magazine aside and turned on her back, stretching like a lazy cat. "I was waiting for you."
He just stared, taking in the body he was so familiar with, the scenario he already knew by heart. She'd done this before, waited for him in sexy lingerie and pounced the moment he walked in the door. Except... this time the show wasn't for him.
"How was your day?" she asked in a sweet innocent voice that turned his stomach.
And all he could do was keep gawking at her like an idiot. Because the normality of the scene soothed him. For a second, he was tempted to ignore what he knew and just curl up next to her in bed, let her fuss over him and listen to his latest work story. But he couldn't. Because his latest story, the thing that hurt and bothered him most was her.
"How long have you been cheating on me?" There was no point beating around the bush, not with Izzy.
Her eyes widened slightly, but the sleazy smile was still in place. He would've thought it a sexy smile, but now all he could see was mould. "Cheating on you? I was packing."
Thank God for that. The sooner she was out of his life, the better. "And out of all people, you had to go for my brother."
Her gaze was filled with innocence for about three seconds before she knocked her head back and laughed. It was high and unnatural. Cruel.
"That's not cheating, Jimmy. I was just testing him."
Jimmy didn't care what she called it. It was still dirty and unforgivable. "Testing him for what?"
She sobered up at the muted anger in his voice and she seemed to finally get how serious this was. At least to him. Her look turned a little annoyed though she tried to keep looking amused.
"To see if he was fit to join us," Izzy answered as though he was an idiot for not figuring that obvious reason out.
Jimmy froze. His blood, his brain, everything. Like his synapses had stopped working, leaving him a floating skeleton. He couldn't, wouldn't process this.
"Come on, be fair." Izzy sat up and crossed her legs. She leaned back on her hands and pushed her chest out. "You had your fun so it was my turn."
His fun. The numbness disappeared bringing a tidal wave of pure rage. "That was you. Hannah was your friend. You didn't even ask me if I wanted a--" The anger sapped the words right out of him.
"A threesome?" She let out a short laugh. "What guy doesn't want a threesome? I liked it. And I want another one with two guys doting on me."
Bile rose to Jimmy's mouth and his stomach churned as his imagination decided to paint her sick words inside his head. He'd never wanted that one threesome. He'd practically found the two girls all over each other when he came home. Izzy had to actually talk him into it. And after that one time, that one experiment, it was over. He'd much rather have just her. He didn't like to share.
"Don't be selfish." She scooted to the edge of the mattress and grabbed his belt, pulling him to her. "It's going to be fun."
Fun? He was doing his best not to knee her in the face. How could she not see that this was over? "Get away from me."
"Oh, you don't mean that." She started undoing his belt, her eyes on him. "You're just pissy that it was your brother. But give me a break. I thought you'd feel most comfortable with him."
Jimmy took a step back, but she pulled him even closer, working on his buttons. It took all his self restraint not to hit her or shove her or hurt her in anyway. Because as sick as she was, she was a girl. His ex. She'd made him happy for over a year. And destroyed him in a matter of minutes.
"Get your hands off me, Izabela!"
"Oh, I love it when you get commanding."
He grabbed her shoulders and pushed her down on the bed. She immediately scooted back and her legs opened, waiting. No way in hell was he going anywhere near that.
"You just don't get it, do you? You cheated on me. With my brother. Lied to both of us."
Izzy rose on her elbows and rolled his eyes. "Now you're just being boring?"
"Boring?" He brought his fist down on the desk. The sound echoed through the small studio like cannon fire. "I loved you. I thought we had something."
"We do. You just insist on ruining it."
"Me? You cheated. You almost made Tom jump off the school building. This isn't funny. It isn't one of your sick games!"
Still she grinned as if he'd paid her the highest compliment. And in that moment, he could see her clearly for the first time. Gone was the girl he'd put on a pedestal. He'd been in love with a sociopath. With a sex addicted, sick, conniving woman.
"This wasn't real," he whispered. What he'd thought of as a real relationship, as his future... it was nothing but his stupid imagination.
Izzy let out that high, cruel laugh again. "Oh yes it was. The most real thing you've ever felt and would ever feel." She came back to the corner of the bed and grabbed his pants again. "That's why you're not leaving. Because you like this. You're just like me and you know you can't get this anywhere else."
Jimmy looked down at her, at the playful twinkle in her eyes, at her hands masterfully undoing his buttons and knew what would follow if he didn't move. If he didn't make up his mind. Fortunately, it was easy.
Because this wasn't him. They weren't the same. Sure, experimenting had been fun and exciting, but it wasn't what he wanted form a long term relationship. From the one. And at that moment, even if his heart was breaking, he realized this was it. Izzy wasn't and had never been the one.
So pulling away and closing his pants was easy. Smiling and packing his crap even more so. Not punching her in the face...a little harder, but she managed that too.
"You shouldn't be doing this," Izzy said, crossing her arms over her chest and pouting. "Because if you walk out that door now, you can't come back."
"Oh, believe me," Jimmy answered, zipping up his duffle bag. "I don't plan on coming back."
"This is stupid. We were so happy together."
"We were. But it was all a big fat lie." He threw her a glance over his shoulder. "You're not healthy. You should get yourself checked."
"So should you," she fired back. "Because I don't always use protection. "
Jimmy winced as that final nail in the coffin sunk in. "I'll keep that in mind." And he stepped out of her studio, out of her life.
The moment the door closed behind him, he felt strangely free. It still hurt like hell, but his rational side insisted that he'd dodged a bullet. It could've been worse. She could've denied and pleaded and made this so much harder for him.
"Jimmy!"
Speaking of which. He turned to face Izzy who'd come rushing out wearing a flimsy silk robe over her getup.
"This is stupid," she said. "Come back in and cut the crap."
"No." He had no idea how his voice could be so calm, but he thanked the heavens for it.
"You're being unreasonable. I didn't do anything wrong."
"So hooking up with my brother and almost pushing him off a building doesn't count as wrong in that sick head of yours?"
She rolled her eyes again and in that moment he was sure this would've never worked. Because she really didn't see anything wrong with it. "You're being overdramatic."
"No, I'm just as dramatic as I should be in a situation like this. Stay away from me. Stay away from Tom. Because if you so much as approach any of us again, I'll damn all my chivalrous instincts and let you have it."
A perverted grin stretched across her face, but she frowned the moment he snarled at her. "You're never going to find someone who can please you like I can."
He shrugged and turned away. "I don't need someone to please me. I need someone to love me." And he walked away from her, away from his certainty and his sanctuary.
He believed what he'd said, but knew it was only half true. And because of Izzy, he was forever jaded.
Who needs love anyway? Love took too much time and sacrifice. Drained the life out of him. He was done with it, done with girls. At least for now.
As he walked down the street and reached a trashcan, he dumped his pack of cigarettes in it. He was done with poisoning himself. Through any means.
