Chapter 16

Having employed the Celestial Cascade, many of the injured cultivators were healed, while numerous demons sustained injuries, greatly aiding the cultivator side. Only the highest-ranked demons, such as Zhang Wei, remained unscathed due to the Celestial Cascade.

"Tsk, it seems you have more up your sleeve than expected," Zhang Wei remarks as he continues his relentless assault. Utilizing the ability had greatly weakened her, a fact Yueting keenly felt as she clashed with Zhang Wei. With each slash, the battle seemed unending. Yueting's focus on Zhang Wei prevented her from noticing Meiyang sneaking up behind her once again. With a swift strike to her back, Meiyang inflicts a significant wound upon Yueting.

Fortunately, since it didn't damage her qi, the rain continued to fall and heal her. It hurt like hell, but due to the power she wielded, she didn't react much to it; it merely hindered her ability to fight.

"Hero!" Li Tiancheng yelled as he rushed forward, swiftly dispatching the demon he was engaged with to hold off Meiyang. "Thank you," Yueting responds, refocusing her attention on Zhang Wei. She hadn't yet seen Li Tiancheng fight, so she was uncertain how long he could hold Meiyang off. Meiyang was no joke; although she may not be specialized in anything, if Zhang Wei was her teacher in this world, then she had to possess at least a little strength.

Attacking Zhang Wei again, Yueting attempted fast strikes rather than powerful ones, hoping to catch him off guard. Zhang Wei was swift too, but since Yueting could wield both swords with one hand or control them separately, he stood no chance. Inflicting multiple cuts on different points, Yueting weakened Zhang Wei. "Ugh!" he moaned in pain. She had yet to deliver a fatal blow, but even her small cuts were potent enough to weaken him.

Stopping the Celestial Cascade, Yueting finally gets her chance to activate Shadowheart.

⌞Activating ability: Shadowheart⌝

With that, long black hands emerged from the ground, crafted from shadow and sin. They seized Zhang Wei by his arms and legs. Despite his attempts to escape, Zhang Wei failed as the arms enveloped him.

Realizing that this was her chance to deliver the final blow, Yueting steeled herself for what needed to be done. With grim determination, she lowered her swords and extended her hand, channeling the power of the Shadowheart.

A massive black hand materialized before her, crackling with dark energy as it hurtled towards Zhang Wei. With unerring accuracy, it struck true, tearing through flesh and bone to claim his heart in one swift motion.

As the hand dissipated into wisps of shadow, leaving only Zhang Wei's lifeless heart lying on the ground, Yueting dared to hope that it was over. But her victory was short-lived as she heard the chilling sound of laughter echoing through the battlefield.

Coughing up blood, Zhang Wei falls to his knees. Thinking Yueting has finished her job, she turns around, only to hear laughter again. "HAHAHAAHSHAH! DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU CAN DEFEAT ME THIS EASILY?" Turning to face Zhang Wei once more, Yueting's blood ran cold as she beheld the sight of the open wound in his chest slowly closing before her eyes. Despite the grievous injury, Zhang Wei's laughter rang out defiantly, a chilling reminder of his resilience and the depths of his power.

Yueting had greatly underestimated Zhang Wei; he was truly insane. Without a second to think, Zhang Wei raged and attacked Yueting again. Moving her hand swiftly, Yueting summoned her sword back to her, defending the attack just before he could hit her.

If she hadn't reacted this quickly, she would've been dead. While still trying her best to hold off Zhang Wei, she spoke to the system, "Why didn't he die?"

⌞System message: As the emperor of the demon realm and a heavenly demon, he has three lives.⌝

"YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME! NOT ONE? NOT TWO? BUT THREE?!" Yueting exclaimed as she tried to counter-attack Zhang Wei, failing.

"What is the quickest way to kill him?" Yueting asked, knowing she wouldn't be able to continue this fight much longer. Having used the powers Shadow Heart and Celestial Cascade, she was close to her limit.

⌞System message: Since he is a demon, using holy spells would be the quickest.⌝

⌞Searching for matching ability...⌝

⌞System message: Heavenly Judgment; bases opponent's death(s) on their sins. If the opponent has too many sins, they shall die instantly. The more sins, the more cruel deaths they shall endure.⌝

⌞System message: Normally, it's used to force the opponent to endure more than one death. However, if the opponent has more than one life, it can instantly kill them multiple times.⌝

That sounded like a dangerous technique to use, but what choice did she have? She wasn't very experienced in swordfighting, so she relied on the system's training method, which made it easier. Even though it was easier, it didn't make Yueting a master, and it drained a lot of her strength. If she didn't use something quick, she wouldn't hold on much longer.

"Okay, just activate it," Yueting told the system.

⌞Activating Heavenly Judgment.⌝

⌞Judging opponent.⌝

⌞Judgment: 260 lives.⌝

Looking at the high number on the system screen, Yueting glanced towards Zhang Wei as he fell to the ground, this time it felt like sincere pain. Screaming and yelling for help, Zhang Wei's voice echoed in agony as he took his final breath. This scene caused every cultivator and demon to stop their fight and look at the scene in front of them. The cultivators thought they had won, while the demons rushed forward to their leader as he howled in pain.

The judgment must indicate how many deaths he'll have to endure. Despite only having 2 more lives, he was forced to go through 260 deaths.

Yueting somehow felt bad, and the effect of the power wore off. The Zhang Wei she had encountered today and yesterday didn't deserve to be felt bad for, but the Zhang Wei Yueting knew in the beginning was kind. So even though she knew that wasn't the real Zhang Wei, she couldn't help but feel sorry for him.

The tension hung heavy in the air as Meiyang's words pierced through Yueting's heart like shards of glass. Tears welled up in Meiyang's eyes, a mixture of sorrow and rage swirling within them as she held onto Yueting's collar with a desperate grip.

Li Tiancheng moved to intervene, his concern evident on his face, but Yueting's raised hand halted him. She needed to face Meiyang's accusations head-on, to confront the pain she had caused, no matter how agonizing it might be.

"How could you do this to me?" Meiyang's voice trembled with anguish, her accusation echoing off the rocky cliffs. "He was the only one I had!" Her words were a raw cry of betrayal.

Yueting remained silent, her gaze fixed on Meiyang as she poured out her anguish. The weight of Meiyang's pain bore down on her, threatening to crush her under its unbearable burden.

"In every lifetime, in every goddamn world, you make my life miserable!" Meiyang's voice rose with each word, her anger fueling the fire of her rage. "You call yourself my lover? You're the one who made my life this shitty!" Her accusations cut deep, slicing through Yueting's defenses with brutal precision.

Yueting was unsure. How did Meiyang know that Yueting could travel from world to world? What was Meiyang saying? Yueting never meant to hurt her.

"Zhang Wei was everything I had in this life. He didn't request anything but my loyalty for everything he gave me! Yet you ruined it all! You ruined my life, not only once, but hundreds of times!" Meiyang's voice cracked with emotion, her grief spilling over like a flood.

"Don't you get it? THIS ISN'T REAL!" Meiyang's words cut through the silence.

As Meiyang's tirade continued, Yueting's mind reeled with the implications of her words. Could it be true? Was their entire reality nothing more than an elaborate illusion, fabricated by her own fractured mind?

For in that moment, as Meiyang's accusations echoed off the cliff walls, Yueting realized that her world was crumbling around her, and she no longer had anywhere to hide from the harsh words.

⌞SYSTEM ERROR⌝

This was the message Yueting remembered the other Yueting got before the system reset time.

❝Though the wounds may heal, the scars of battle run deep, a reminder of the price paid for victory.❝
