Chapter Eight: French Toast and Forgiveness
Sunday is supposed to be the day of rest, right? So when I am awoken by loud noises at seven in the morning, I get a little upset.
I whip my door open and stick my head out into the hallway to try to see what the noise was.
Both my parents and Greysons doors are still shut, so I assume that they are still asleep.
I still hear the noises but I can now tell that they are coming from downstairs. I sluggishly walk down the stairs and towards the noise which is coming from the kitchen.
I carefully look into the kitchen and am happily surprised by what I see.
"Grandma D? What are you doing here?"
My grandma turns away from the counter filled with bowls, and smiles with her arms wide, "Oh, my Supernova! Come give me a hug!"
I run into her arms and breathe in her smell of vanilla and cinnamon. We give each other a big, warm hug and it is one of the best feelings ever.
My Grandma D is one of my favorite people on this planet. Whenever she comes to visit it is always a great time for the whole family. I don't know what I would do without her.
"Grandma, what are you doing here so early? And what are you doing to our kitchen?"
"Oh, I'm not doing anything to your kitchen, child. Except for making my famous French toast. It was going to be a surprise when you all woke up, but it seems you caught me."
"That was all your fault, you woke me up with all of your ruckus."
"All my ruckus?" my grandma laughs, "Child, you are starting to sound like an old lady yourself."
I gasp and go into a fit of laughter. Grandma D grabs a dish towel of of the counter and whips me with it.
"Shhh. Now look at who's causing all of the ruckus," my grandma scolds.
She turns back to the counter which has all of the ingredients for her French toast. She waves her arm, signaling for me to come over by her.
"Seeing as you are up and awake, you can help me make this French toast for the rest of your family."
She had already started mixing up the batter that the bread needed to be soaked in, so I grab a pan and start heating it up on the stove.
We get into a rhythm of her soaking the bread and placing it on the pan while I am in charge of flipping it.
The kitchen soon flows with the smell of cinnamon and the fresh pot of coffee that was put on.
I grab myself a plate and stack it high with French toast and pour myself a cup of coffee.
My grandma properly stores the French toast so that they won't get cold and joins me at the table with her coffee.
"Tell me everything that is happening in your life right now, my Supernova."
I sigh, "Not that much. This coming week is Spirit Week and then Saturday is Homecoming."
"Oh I loved Homecoming. Do you have a date this year?"
"No I don't have a date. I am going with my friends like always Grandma," I say taking a bite of French toast.
"You're telling me there is still no guy in your life?"
I look at my grandma with my mouth hanging open, "Grandma! No, there is still no guy in my life, thank you very much."
My grandma starts laughing, "Relax, I just think that any guy would be fortunate to have you in their life."
I smile at her and take another bite of my French toast. I hear a noise coming from the stairway and turn to see what it is.
My parents slowly walk into the kitchen with a confused look on their faces.
"Mom?" my dad asks.
"Your one and only," Grandma D says while getting up from her chair.
The two of them give each other a hug, my dad still looking surprised.
"What are you doing here?" my dad asks while sniffing the room, "and did you make French toast?"
"I just wanted to come and visit you guys. Why is that so surprising for you people?"
"Because you practically broke into our house, Mom."
Grandma D waves her arm, "It's not breaking in if you gave me a key. I also have not heard a single thank you for the breakfast that I made for you all."
"Diane, I am so glad that you are here. Thank you so much for making breakfast for me and my family," my mom says.
My grandmas face lights up and she opens her arms up, "Bridget, you better come over here and give me a hug."
My mom smiles and walks over to her and is immediately engulfed in a hug.
Pulling away, Grandma D says, "You are the best thing to happen to my son. I don't know what he would do without you."
My dad leans over and kisses my mom on the cheek, "There's something that I can agree with."
I roll my eyes with a smile on my face. Sometimes it's annoying when your parents are all lovey dovey, other times it's just way too cute.
"Alright, that's enough hugs for now. Go eat some breakfast before it gets cold," Grandma D says shooing them away.
The two of them load their plates with French toast and join me at the table. My grandma pours two cups of coffee for them before sitting back down.
My dad looks at his plate and starts to do a little happy dance before he takes a bite. My mom is a little more composed, but you can still tell she is excited for the food.
They both dig into their plates and I just watch as their faces light up.
"So miss Nova here was telling me that Homecoming is this week, but unfortunately she has yet to get a date," Grandma D says.
"Grandma!" I complain.
"Relax, I just wanted to hear what they have to say about this topic."
"Grandma, I'm sure you will be happy to learn that Nova actually does have a new guy friend, and he is going with her to Homecoming," Greyson says from the counter with a bad case of bed head.
My grandma looks at me, shocked, before getting up to give Greyson a hug. She quickly makes a plate for him and ushers him to the table.
"This is the first I've ever heard of a new guy! Why didn't you tell me about him?" she asks me.
I shrug, "There's not much to say. He's new and from Oakland and not really much of a friend."
"Well you are being nice to the boy aren't you?"
I hesitate, "Um, yes."
Greyson scoffs, "I heard what you and your friends were saying about him. I'm not sure that I would count that as nice."
"Well he's our friend now," I reply.
"Does he know that? Or does he think you all still hate him?" My grandma questions.
I open my mouth to reply but realize I have nothing good to say. Is Connor really my friend? Does he still think we all hate him?
I finish off my French toast and coffee before I go back up to my room without another word.
Going deep into a mental spiral, I start to get worried about what I've done to Connor and what he must think of me.
I decide to text him, asking if he would meet me at the park that is here in town. Thankfully he responds quickly and agrees to meet me there in an hour.
I look at myself in the mirror and notice how I still look like I just got out of bed. I head to the bathroom and quickly take a shower which helps to wake me up even more.
I try to get dressed quickly, but struggle with picking out an outfit. I end up just wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. I quickly apply some light makeup before putting my shoes on and head back downstairs.
Everyone is still sitting at the table, the French toast is all gone but the conversation is still hot. They all stop their conversation when they notice me.
My grandma smiles, "And where might you be going?"
"I need to have a talk with a friend," I say.
She nods, "Good. Now get out of here."
I laugh while heading out the door and try to prepare what I'm going to say.

When I get to the park, Connor is already there and sitting at a bench.
I hesitantly walk up and take a seat next to him.
"So why exactly did you ask to see me?" He asks.
"I wanted to talk to you."
He raises an eyebrow, "Yeah? About what?"
I look down at my hands, "I wanted to apologize. I was a jerk to you when you first got here. Then when I saw you at the movies, I may have overreacted a little bit. I just don't want you to think that I hate you."
He looks over at me and I bring myself to meet his eyes.
"I don't think that you hate me Nova. I just think that I was something different in your life that you weren't ready for. I also don't think you overreacted by what I did at the movies. I was acting like someone I would rather not bring back."
I look over at him, confused, by his last comment and he just smiles back softly.
"Also, you and your friends are really the only people who have talked to me since I transferred here, besides Adam. I don't think you guys would do that if you hated me," he adds.
"I'm sure the school will come around. You really aren't that bad, for being from Oakland," I say nudging his arm.
"Is that all you had to say? That you don't hate me?" He asks.
"I thought it was important that you knew that. I didn't want us to go any further before you forgave me for how I treated you."
He smiles and shakes his head, "Trust me, you could have treated me a lot worse. But I forgive you, as long as you forgive me."
I squint at him before saying, "Yes, I forgive you. Now are we friends or what?"
He laughs before extending his arm out to me, "Friends."
I shake his hand and relax back into the bench. We just sit in silence for a moment, comfortable with each other.
"Now I know you said that you don't hate me, but do you ever think that Tony and Sabrina will join you?"
I take a deep breath, "Those two are tough. They are a lot less trusting than the rest of us, but they are probably the most caring people I know. Just give them time and they will come around to you."
He nods, "I'm glad to hear that. You should also know that Adam is a great guy, he has been there for me in more ways than I can count. I'm glad that you guys are accepting him as well."
"Well Adam wasn't as hard to like as you. I'm happy that you two are joining us for Spirit Week. I'm sure Kayla has already been spamming you with the outfit ideas."
"Yes she has. I gotta say, Spirit Week here at Eastwood seems a lot more fun than at Oakland."
"Oh just you wait. There is no way I could prepare you for what this week is like. Just remember that you look more ridiculous if you don't dress up."
"Thanks for the tip," he says, "Well, I'm glad that we had this talk Nova."
"Me too. I'll see you tomorrow?"
He smiles, "I'll be next to you in Creative Writing."
He gets up from the bench and walks to his car. I watch as he drives off, smiling as he waves goodbye. I now officially have a new friend.
