Rey's Point Of View
It's been two days since I wrote the author and every time I check the mail, I feel my nerves rising. I know he's probably too busy to reply, but still I can't help but hope.
I open the mailbox and flip through the stacks of envelopes, scanning for anything addressed to me. Still nothing. I go inside, feeling a bit disappointed though I've told myself a thousand times that I would never receive a reply. I went to Miss Holdo's office and placed the mail on her desk in front of her.
"Thank you, Rey," she said.
I nodded, then turned to leave.
"Oh... Rey." I heard her say, I turned to find that she was holding a small package towards me. "This came for you."
I looked at her puzzled, then I accepted the package. "Thanks," I replied absentminded as I left her office. I looked at the package, it was indeed addressed to me, but who would send me a package? I read the return address and I nearly fainted as I saw that it was from my favorite author, Ben Solo.
I hurried to my room and sat down on my bed. I quickly opened the package, unable to wait another moment to see what was inside. I felt excitement wash over me as I saw that it was a copy of The Starlight Chronicles. I couldn't believe that he not only replied, but also sent me a copy of his book as well. I noticed an envelope inside the package, so I pulled it out, and carefully tore it open. I pulled out a letter and began reading it silently.
~💌~
Dear Rey,
Thank you so much for the amazing letter! You're actually the first person to write me since I've published my book. It felt like I was getting the silent treatment, I was so desperate for any kind of response... that I even hoped to receive a hate letter... it would be better than all of this silence. You have no idea how relieved I was to receive your letter. It hasn't been easy, I was turned down and mocked by so many publishers...
You asked if I was going to write anymore books. I was planning on making The Starlight Chronicles into a trilogy... maybe even a series, but no one likes my book and I'm beginning to think that everything they said about me was true, I'm just not good enough and I never will be.
But I'm glad that at least my book made one person happy. Your letter is the best thing I've ever received, and that's why I wanted to give you this: an autographed copy of my book. And it's rare... because I'm not really comfortable with crowds, so I will probably never do a book signing.
I'm glad you like Anakin, he's my favorite character too.
Can you keep a secret?... you're right about Anakin and Padme.
P.S. don't be afraid, you can write me any time
Sincerely, Ben
~💌~
Tears stung my eyes, how could he believe that he wasn't good enough? He's my favorite author.
I set the letter down and open the book to the inside cover, to find that it is indeed signed. I smiled at the note above his signature.
"To my number one fan: Rey"
~ Ben Solo
I closed the book and pick up the letter, I have to write back. His story brought hope to me, I can't just sit back while he feels so hopeless. I begin writing, this time pouring my heart into the words.
A little while later, I finished writing my letter and went into the living room, where Finn and Rose were sitting, playing checkers together.
"Guess what?" I asked excitedly.
"You won a trip to Disney World?" Finn asked, jokingly.
"No! Ben Solo wrote me back, he even sent a signed copy of his book."
"Wow!" said Finn.
"Really?" Rose asked.
I opened the book for them to see. They both came over and examined the signature.
"Cool," said Finn.
"So how far have you gotten?"
"I'm at the part where Anakin meets Padme and Qui Gon."
I nodded. "Do you like it so far?"
He nodded. "It's great! You should read it too Rose."
She nodded, "I can't wait to see what all of the fuss is about."
They went back to playing checkers, and I went outside to drop my letter in the mailbox.
