Chapter 8
"Link..."
"Link!"
"LINK! OPEN YOUR EYES, SLEEPYHEAD, BREAKFAST IS READY!"
"Huh...? What time is it," the Hylian said, quickly sitting up in his bed.
Wait what- That can't be right... My bed? I thought I was in the City... What am I doing back in my room?! This makes no sense at all... Zelda... Saria... Were they nothing but people in a dream...?
Link stood up to be greeted by his carpeted floor but thanks to his grogginess he didn't even notice it as he went over to open his light green curtains and bask in the sunlight that poured in through them.
Sure enough, everything was still the same. His room with all his trophies and video games strewn across the floor, his view of Malon's slightly faded yellow house across the street... Everything!
Within seconds, a familiar clicking sound appeared down the hallway, immediately telling him to go over and open his bedroom door. The moment he did he was jumped on and landed on the floor with a soft thump within seconds.
"Down boy! Down," he laughed, trying to get away from the Husky that was practically pinning him down. When Hero was just a pup, it wasn't as hard to get away but now... Now that's a whole another story. "Hero... Sit! Stop it! Please!"
The dog finally complied and sat down, turning his head slightly to look at Link, tail wagging uncontrollably.
Link chuckled to himself as he bent down and patted Hero's head softly.
"Heh, looks like someone's pretty happy today, huh? I'll be able to play when I get home... Right now I need to get ready for school.
The Hylian boy went over to his dresser, pulling out a pair of dark green sweatpants and a white T-shirt.
Well, not being in the City means no uniform... I guess I'm lucky about that.
After getting dressed he threw on his favorite light blue hoodie and rushed downstairs to get breakfast.
"Hey aunt Cece," the Hylian said as his aunt turned and put a plate for him on the table and he eyed the plate hungrily.
"Wait a minute... Why are you so silent today? It's not like you..."
His aunt Celia looked at him silently, tilting her head slightly and giving her nephew a confused look.
"Are you okay? This is kinda weird, are you giving me the silent treatment?"
At that, she smiled and turned back around, beginning to wash the dishes.
"Heh, look whose quiet today, guess you can't call me a mute anymore!"
His aunt opened her mouth to answer, her response only causing him to nearly fall off his chair.
"BEEP. BEEP. BEEP."
"Haha auntie, very funny-"
"BEEP. BEEP. BEEP."
"Why are you mocking the sound of... MY ALARM!-"
Link sat up in bed quickly before reaching over to check his phone.
Well, would you look at that... I guess I still am in the City... AND I'M ABOUT TO BE LATE FOR SCHOOL! WHAT A WAY TO RUIN MY REPUTATION AND STREAK OF BEING EARLY-
The Hylian boy quickly grabbed his uniform clothes from the chair at his desk and rushed tried to put them on as fast as possible, which resulted in him hopping on one foot into the living room with his phone in his mouth as he tried to pull up his pants as well as get to the kitchen to make toast.
After popping the slices of bread inside the toaster he practically ran all the way to the bathroom to brush his teeth and make his hair look... Well, decent.
That alone was a struggle. Somehow he had managed to get it tangled, matted, and... Wait... Was that drool he smelled in his hair?
"Ugh, I'm a mess," he laughed to himself while grabbing the spray can of leave in conditioner his aunt Celia had reminded him to pack several times and a brush. "This'll make the smell go away but I definitely need to wash my hair later..."
A moment before he finished the toaster popped, causing him to quickly pull the brush through the last tangled area in his hair and leave him hissing in pain for a second.
He sprinted across the living room to the kitchen, using the hardwood floor and his socks as an advantage while mentally chuckling to himself.
Hah, I'll have to thank Saria for that one later!
While holding the bread in his mouth, which he had to admit was a few shades darker than when his aunt would toast it, he slipped on his shoes, tucking the shoelaces inside since he figured that would only delay him more.
After grabbing his backpack, a jacket, and his wallet he went outside, noticing a note on his door as he went to lock it.
He pulled it off and folded it, putting it in his pocket so he could read it later on.
I hope no one making complaints already... I haven't even done anything, well... Yet.
The moment the door was locked he took off down the empty hallway, completely ignoring the elevator in favor of the stairs.
He ran down the stairs, out his building, past the place where he had, ever so gracefully, fallen on top of Zelda, and all the way to the school.
The moment he got to the school, the bell had already rung, it was so loud that he heard it from several blocks away.
Ugh, why'd I have to oversleep today! What a lovely start to the day...
Link soon spotted the principal walking towards him in the hallway, his face was so blank that it showed way fewer signs of life than Groose's brain could ever.
Great... Just when I thought this day couldn't get any worse...
"Young man," the voice of principal boomed. "Why aren't you in class?"
Link stuttered a bit, caught off guard by the sudden question. "I- I'm sorry Sir, I just got in the building..."
Great, I haven't even been here for that long and I'm already getting in trouble...
"If you just got in, where is your tardy slip?"
The Hylian boy patted his pants pockets, looking for the one that held the small piece of paper before pulling it out and giving it to the broad man that loomed over him. "Here it is..."
"Ah, you're that transfer student from Forest... Let's go to my office, I'll help you know everything about this school that could help you succeed for the time you're here and. Perhaps I could learn a bit about you as well."
"But, shouldn't I be getting to class? I'm sure that-"
"Nonsense, I'm positive that Ms. Lulu wouldn't mind, it is only music after all. You must've already taken it while you were back home anyway, right?"
"But..."
"No buts, I insist."
"Um... If you say so, Sir."
The walk to the office was a bit awkward. Link knew nothing about this man, yet, for some reason, he wanted to know so much about him... It just didn't add up.
Link was a bit skeptical yet, he brushed it off and answered the principal's questions one after the other as honestly as he could.
"So, aside from being the National Archery Champion, do you have any other talents... Any other interests " the principal asked, peering at the Hylian over the tops of his hands, clearly interested in what he had to say.
"No, not really. Archery seems to be my main focus. I don't think any other sport is that interesting... Besides, it's my strongest one anyway-"
"Are you sure? Fencing does seem like it would be right up your alley as well Mr, what was it again... McKnight?"
"Fencing is a bit of a side interest but, I don't really think it would be my thing... Why do you ask?"
"No reason, in particular, I just thought that someone of your talent would be interested in such a sport."
Link shifted in his chair, rubbing his hand along the back of his neck and mentally looking for a way out of this conversation. "I see. I do practice a bit of it on the side but I really don't have much interest in it..."
A sudden silence swept the room, bringing a slight sense of tension with it, only to be broken by the bell signaling the end of the period.
Link immediately stood up. "Well... That's the end of the period... I'm sorry Sir but I really need to go. I have Hyrule History with Ms. Midna and I don't think she would be happy with me being late. Besides, I do need that class to pass..."
"No no, Mr. McKnight... I understand, please, you're free to go."
The Hylian boy got up and headed towards the door, feeling the sudden weight of the moment be lifted off his shoulders meanwhile the principal slightly glared at the boy over his folded hands.
Once Link had left the office, the principal's hand went straight to his phone, dialing a number he now knew by heart.
A gravely voice responded on the other side of the phone. "HeLlO..."
"It's me. Remember your accusations?"
"YeSs. ArE tHeY wHo I sAiD tHeY wErE?"
"I'm not sure. There are signs though."
"YoU iMbIcIlLe- I aM nEvEr WrOnG, yOu KnOw ThAt!"
"SILENCE YOU FOOL! HOW DARE YOU CALL ME AN IMBICILLE?! YOUR VERY LIFE RESTS IN MY HANDS, DO YOU DARE TAKE THAT RISK," the principal shouted, slamming his fists on his desk for emphasis.
"YeSs- Of CoUrSe GrEaT mAsTeR... i'M sOrRy. ThAnK yOu FoR yOuR kInDnEsS-"
After his outburst, a sudden silence fell over the hallway outside his office and he lowered his tone, trying to avoid alerting anyone.
"Oh shut up! Now you want to blubber to me about how great I am when mere seconds ago you insulted me?! You think I am so idiotic that I'd actually believe it? Don't make me laugh! It seems like the real idiot here is you."
"Oh S-sUrE, i'M tHe IdIoT hErE... i'D lEaRn To ApPrEcIaTe My S-sOuRcEsS iF i WeRe YoU. iT hElPs MaKe SuRe ThAt ThEy WoN't TuRn On YoU iN tHe FuTuRe..."
"Really? Are you planning on turning on me then? Remember who's the one funding your research of the resting place of my grandfather, Zant. I offered you a place as a King, I wouldn't want to lose that if I were you."
"Of C-cOuRsE nOt Mr. DrAgMiRe- Of CoUrSe NoT."
