Chapter 5

Link sat on the floor of the hallway, his back against the wall.

Did I really just see Zelda here? No, my eyes MUST be playing tricks on me or something... That couldn't have been her, but it was, wasn't it? I'm sure that it was!

Cutting off his thoughts, the elevator dinged again.

Link looked around the corner just in time to see Zelda run out of the elevator and back to the apartment she just left and knock on the door.

"Sariaaaaaaa I forgot my keys in my bag."

It can't be right... but it is. That's Zelda for sure. But, if she forgot her keys then would that mean she didn't live here? Or maybe that meant she did? Ugh, why don't I just go ask her or something for crying out loud!

Zelda stood in front of a very distracted Link, unnoticed. "I thought someone was watching me... Ask her what?

"Wait, what- Zelda, how did you," Link stuttered, feeling both shock and surprise.

Zelda chuckled. "Which question would you like me to answer first? The one about how did I find you stalking me or the one about how I 'read your thoughts'?"

"I, I wasn't stalking you. I'm actually staying here thanks to the student exchange program. An old friend of my aunt owns the building so... here I am now. Also yeah, how did you read my mind?"

"Well," Zelda laughed. "I actually didn't read your thoughts, you kinda just said the last part... out loud."

"I DID?"

Zelda nodded. "Yup."

"And you heard me from about halfway down the hallway?"

Zelda nodded again, pointing at one of her ears. "We're Hylians remember, we hear everything. Well, almost everything."

"True."

A moment later Saria opened the door to her aunt's apartment, expecting Zelda to be right outside.

"Zel, you wanted me to open the door and you're not there? I swear to sweet Nayru above that if you're trying to scare me or something, it's not going to work," Saria said, sticking her head outside and looking for her friend. "Oh, there you are. Aww, look at you two having one of those special moments from books in the hallway."

"W-what, Saria, it's not what you think, wait, what do you think?"

"Zel, it's not what I think, its what I see. To be honest, what I see is marriage and a few kids perhaps."

"SARIA," Zelda screamed, her face sprinkled with a pink blush that was growing darker.

Saria laughed at her friend's protest. "Don't deny the truth darling. Anyways, isn't that the boy from earlier, uh, what was his name, Link?"

Before Zelda could reply, Link answered for her. "Yeah, I'm Link. Your name is Saria, right?"

"Yup, that's me, good ol' Saria," she said chuckling.

"Saria, the word good doesn't even begin to describe you, you're good but in a horrible way," Zelda laughed.

"Guilty as charged," Saria replied, in a singsongy voice, dangling Zelda's keys from one of her fingers as she stepped out into the hallway wearing only her pajamas and fluffy socks. "So, do you want your keys or not, Zel?"

"Uh, yeah, how else am I supposed to get into my house? You don't expect me to climb in through the window do you," Zelda asked, raising an eyebrow at her friend.

A playful light danced in Saria's eyes as she said four words. "Then come get them..."

"Saria, I swear that if you run away then I'll, uh, convince your aunt that coffee is bad and you shouldn't drink it."

"Good luck with that, she drinks coffee herself."

Zelda mumbled under her breath. "Dang it!" Running towards Saria, she almost entirely forgot about Link. "Give me my keys Saria!!!"

"I said to come get them," Saria said, running towards Zelda and sliding right past her.

Curse those fluffy socks, I could've caught her if she hadn't been wearing them.

Saria kept sliding on the newly waxed linoleum floor, looking back at Zelda and sticking out her tongue. "Better luck next time, darling!"

Looking past her, Zelda realized that Link was still there, sending him a glance. He nodded and waited for just the right moment.

Saria screamed a bit as Link's arms closed around her, trapping her where she stood.

"Gotcha," he laughed, smirking. "I see you forgot I was here, maybe you should pay more attention to where you're going."

"Yup, I think we can both learn a few things from Link," Zelda said, chuckling. She walked up to her captured friend and plucked her keys out of Saria's hand. "I'll be taking that, thank you."

Saria shrugged as best as she could while within Link's grasp. "Alright, I was going to give them to you anyways. Uh Link, can you let me go now, please?"

"Oh yeah, right. Sorry," the Hylian boy replied, chuckling and releasing her. "I almost forgot you were there."

"Does everyone forget I'm here," Saria exclaimed. "Because it kinda seems like it, well except for that owner of the coffee shop."

"Well, it's kinda hard to not forget you're there especially since, uh..."

"Let me guess you're going to say 'especially since you're so short' aren't you?"

"Nope, not even close."

"Then what were you going to say?"

"It's not important," Link said, tapping his temple, his face turning slightly pink. "I was thinking of something and it almost slipped out, it really wasn't important anyway."

"Uh, alright, if you say so..."

~~Later~~

Her house flooded with the light of the street lamps lining her block as she walked towards her room, noticing her father asleep in a chair in the living room.

He's been working so hard lately... It must be pretty hard for someone who works for the mayor. I could only imagine the work he's being forced to do.

Zelda flopped down on her bed and looked at her phone, checking for any notification.

Nothing. Huh, I'm sure someone would've texted me by now. I'm soooo bored... What should I do...

Looking around her bedroom which was covered in her drawings and paintings she saw nothing that really stood out and inspired her.

Why can't something for me to do just magically appear or something? Why is it so hard for inspiration to hit me?

She stared up at the ceiling, imagining what she could be doing at the moment but nothing came to mind.

UGHH WHY IS THIS SO BORING?!

A tingling sensation on her left arm made her quickly sit up, staring at the words that began to take form on it.

Hey, I thought you said we were going to talk later on, now technically is later. Did you forget about me?

Zelda looked down at her arm, smiling.

How could I forget about them? Well, that's something to do, for now...

Zelda looked around for the nearest pen, grabbing it from her bedside table and using it to write out a response on her arm.

Sorry, I forgot. Things can get a little... hectic while being a high schooler. I'm not busy now though, I'm actually pretty bored at the moment.

Zelda laid back down, rolling over so that she was laying on her stomach, waiting for a reply.

No worries, I'm a high schooler too so I understand. Um, this might sound weird but... do you mind telling me something about you so I can to get to know a little about you? I don't mind you asking me anything...

Um, they want to know about me... Alright, that's not that much, right? But what if they're like, a criminal or something... Oh shut up Zelda, look at yourself. Worrying about someone you don't even know, I mean, they're your SOULMATE for crying out loud... Well, I mean, they could always be a criminal... Let's just stick to the basics to stay safe, no names or anything just yet...

The feeling of another message taking form on her arm brought her back into reality.

Only if you want to though, I know it might seem weird to have a stranger asking questions about you...

Zelda grabbed her pen from the bed beside her, thinking what to write back.

Oh, no it's alright. But do you mind if we just kinda stick to the basics, like no names just yet? If you don't mind that is...

Zelda let out a huge sigh, rolling over again to stare at the ceiling.

What is there really to learn about me that's basic? I'm a girl, that's a start I guess... Uh, I go to Time High. What else, what's interesting about me? I, um, I like to draw. Wait no, that's not interesting, they already know that... I guess I'm a pretty uninteresting person after all. Wait, my dad works for the mayor, isn't that interesting? But wait, what if they're a kidnapped and hold me hostage for a ransom, OR WORSE???!! Uh, let's just stick with the uninteresting things, for now, Zelda...

Zelda was so focused on her thinking that when she went back to write her uninteresting facts there already was a message waiting for her.

Oh, I'm surprised that I didn't feel that...

Zelda read the message to herself quietly, quickly forgetting her thoughts.

Didn't Hylia make it so we weren't able to write our names? I think they said something about that in history class before... Anyway, sure, I don't mind. So uh, should I go first or would you like to?

Um...I'll go first before my little conscience decided to say something about it.

Zelda wrote out every word, trying to make herself seem like the most boring person in case her life was in danger.

I'm a girl and I go to Time High. Um, I like to draw, I read a bit but mostly when I'm in school. Annnd, I, hmm, I'm going to be learning archery soon thanks to a good friend of mine. I think that's everything... I'm a pretty boring person.

There was a little voice at the back of her head that kept repeating what they wrote earlier.

"Didn't Hylia make it so we weren't able to write our names? I think they said something about that in history class before..."

I guess that could be true, Hylia did always have a sense of mystery to her, well according to all those textbooks and documentaries about her. But if it is then how did Saria get to know her soulmate's name, somehow something doesn't really add up here... Maybe I should search it up on my iSlate... Nah, I can just ask Saria.

While waiting for her soulmate's reply, Zelda quickly grabbed her phone and typed out a message to Saria.

Zelda- Hey Saria, I have a question... Remember how you told me that Mido, or whatever his name is, told you his name?

Saria- What about it?

Zelda- Well, how exactly did he tell you his name? I was told that Hylia made it so we wouldn't be able to tell each other.

Saria- She did do that but somehow he found a loophole. He wrote his name as an acrostic poem... I'd have to admit, that was pretty smart of him. He's really persistent.

Zelda- Really?!

Saria- Yeah, anyway, was that all you needed? I'm kinda in the middle of something right now...

Zelda- Oh, carry on then, I just wanted to ask you about the whole name thing.

After she typed out her reply, Zelda put her phone down on the bed beside her and looked at her arm, reading her soulmate's reply.

Alright, I guess it's my turn... I'm a boy and I go to Forest High. I can't draw if my life depended on it, the only thing I can draw is stick figures and my art teacher kinda hates me for that. Anyway, I'm well, alright, at archery and fencing. I wouldn't say I'm as good as the leader of our team though. I'm average I guess. So yeah, I guess that's all the interesting things about me and my life. See, you're not the only boring person here, you're not even boring to begin with! You live in an AMAZING city, how could you be boring?

Zelda looked down at her arm and couldn't help but smile at how nice he was but, soon the little voice in the back of her head began to take over.

He mentioned something about the leader of the archery and fencing team... DOES HE KNOW LINK???! Oh wait, why wouldn't he, he does go to Forest High after all. BUT, HE DID ALSO MENTION SOMETHING ABOUT THE CITY BEING AMAZING... Has he been here before? How else would he know about it and Time High? Maybe he's friends with Link and he was telling him about the city... Maybe I should ask him about it...

Zelda picked up her pen and was about to move to write out her message but then she realized something. Her eyelids were growing heavier and heavier with every second she stayed awake. She soon began dozing off little by little, fighting against it to try and ask her question before she fell asleep. She knew that the moment that she closed her eyes, they'd stay closed until morning. She just had to ask him though...

She brought her pen to her arm and tried to write but it was no use though. Right before her pen could even touch her arm she completely dozed off, her breaths evening out into a steady pace as her pen fell out of her hand and rolled onto the wooden floor of her bedroom. There the pen lay, out of reach until she would wake up the next morning. She would have to ask in the morning, that is, if she could remember what she was going to write...
