Space Man (#JustWriteBits #NoGravity)
"Mom! I'm dying!" I call my mom in a panic.
She rushes in, her wet hair sticking to her crazed face. She rushes up to me and starts patting me down for any injuries.
"Honey?"
"I woke up this morning and I-I was floating! It's a sign of my impending death, I just know it!" I rush out.
My mom thinks I'm an idiot. I could tell because she slapped me like I'm the biggest moron on this planet. Which I might be. I don't know, I'm panicking.
"What were you thinking! You know I don't like your pranks, honey," she explains all this while stroking my red cheek that she is the cause of.
"But I swear this isn't a joke. I was really floating!" I clamber to my bed and throw myself on it and imitate myself sleeping. "I was just sleeping like I usual. I wake up and I'm floating a good three feet above my bed."
"Honey, are you see it wasn't just a dream?" she asks.
"... It felt real."
"Okay, Jackie, I really need to get ready for work. And you need to get to school."
"I know."
My phone vibrates and lights up displaying a message from my friend, Cody, telling me to hurry up.
I turn to my closet and start scrounging for anything suitable. I find some clothes and throw them on. I shove my house keys into my pants pocket and sling my backpack on to my shoulders. Both shoulders, baby.
I dial Cody on my phone and he picks up. "Where the hell are you?"
"Dude, I have something crazy to tell you when I get to school."
"Then hurry up! Something awesome just broke out at school!"
"A fight?"
"A fight involving Cassy," he says her name girlishly.
"Dave and Fred?"
"Dave and Pat," he corrects.
"No way! I'm there at the speed of light!" I put the phone down and pick up the speed of my run.
I finally reach the school and slip past all the gossiping teens. I immediately make my way to the gathering crowd around two grunting hormonal males and a screaming female.
"Could you two block heads stop already!" Cassy yells at them but they ignore her.
I elbow my way to the front and get grabbed by my bag. I'm jerked back and Cody's in my ear.
"You missed their shouting game at the beginning. Now they're taking up their fists."
"Anyone swung one?"
"Nah." He suddenly slaps my shoulder. "And none of them will. Look there, Mr Pickins coming. Let's bail."
He grabs my bag and drags me out of the now dispersing crowd. We speed to our lockers and bang against the chipped red paint on them. Spotted with a few good dents from fights over the years. I think of them as veterans in the war of high school versus teenagers. An ongoing war that has taken many lives.
"I really thought I'd finally get to see some blood," Cody complains.
"If you want to see blood so badly, go ask Trent to give you a bloody nose."
"Whatever. What were you going to tell me? It better be crazy."
"Yeah! I think I might be dying!"
"What? Find a lump or something?"
"No! But maybe I should check. Anyway! I woke up this morning floating like five feet above my bed. It was insane! Oh, and my mother slapped me."
"Why would floating be a symptom of death, hypochondriac?"
"But I was floating!"
"Then why aren't you floating now?"
"I don't know, maybe it wore off."
"Problem solved then." He slams his locker closed after collecting his science textbooks.
"But what if it happens again?"
"Call me?"
"How would I be able to call you if my phone is on my bed?"
"Idiot, you don't just float because you were sleeping- Wait. What if you float when you're in a relaxed state?"
"How can we try that? We're at school, remember?"
"You're right. School is the second most stressful thing in this world."
"I've got it!" he suddenly exclaims.
"Dude, we're in class. Shut up," I whisper to him.
"You instantaneously fall asleep in Mr Clause's class. Let's try that!"
"And float in front of everyone? Giving myself away to all the bad guys who could be after me?" I flick him in his forehead.
"Really? Bad guys?" He shakes his head at me.
"Think about! It's just like in those comics!"
"Those superhero comics?"
"Yeah! Maybe I'm a superhero! Superheroes fly, right?"
"You float, not fly. Seriously, what could you save just by floating? Slowly get a kitten out a tree?"
"I was thinking closer to saving people from burning buildings and fleeing from bad guys easily."
"Wow. What a gutless superhero."
The bell rings, signaling my time to shine.
"Let's do this."
Cody follows me out of the classroom but we're thrown back into the lockers by, guess who, Trent and his lackeys.
"Hi, nerds. I want you two to do something for me," Trent says.
"A favor, perhaps?"
"The cost for your lives."
"Again? I thought I already paid in full last time," I say sarcastically.
Trent grabs my jacket collar and hoists me above the ground a few feet.
"Look, Jack, you're floating," Cody whispers to me.
"Distract Dave for me so I can talk to Cassy."
"I don't know if you know this but Dave will squash us upon sight like ants. How in the hell would we be able to distract him so you can talk to his girl?"
"It's important so do what you have to, got it?" he says threateningly.
"Got it!" I squeak when his hand presses against my throat.
He lets me go and walks away but not out of sight.
Cody grabs my arm and leads me out the school to the back of the field with Trent trailing us. I spot Dave and Cassy surrounded by Dave's jock friends and of course they're smoking.
I pray to God quickly. I square my feet and take a deep breath. I pick up a stone and throw it at Dave then grab Cody. We sprint away like the devil's at our heels. I mean, he might me.
"I'll kill you!" I hear him shout after us.
We enter the school and into the boys' toilets. We struggle into a stall and lock the door. We balance on the lid of the toilet and pray that we lost Dave.
"What are we going to do?"
"I don't know!" I whisper shout at Cody.
"We're both dead."
"You're right about that."
We both freeze and watch as the toilet stall door opens slowly to reveal an angry Dave. Correction, a seriously pissed off Dave.
"I thought you locked the door."
"I thought you locked the door!" Cody shouts at me.
"You suck at throwing. It didn't even come close to hitting me. Actually, you need to hide your powers, Jackie Boy."
I stare at Dave in disbelief.
"What is it? Telekinesis? Levitation?" He grins at me.
"Cody."
"Yeah?"
"Do you believe me now?"
"Yeah."
