Breathe in breathe out (10/13/2020)

Hi there. So I skipped days 11 and 12 because one was very spoiler heavy for my Reese AU and the other was spoilers for a character in a rp I'm doing that I cannot yet share so uh- oops- XD

Prompt: (delayed drowning, chemical pneumonia, Oxygen mask)
Triggers: Hospital, coma
Fandom: MCU

The heart monitored beeped softly in time to Cassidy's heart as Damien sat with his chin resting on his folded hands, watching it keep track of each beat.

He hadn't slept in what felt like days at this point. Not since she went unresponsive one night after yet another nightmare. The... oh what was it now? 25th nightmare? They had been mostly scattered through last month here and there but...

This month... October... Since the beginning of the month they'd noticed they were getting worse and worse.

She'd wake up, thinking she was somewhere else or wake up but in pain or unaware of reality around her. She'd sob into his arms afterward until she passed out again.

It hurt so much to watch her suffer. But he didn't know what to do. It wasn't until the night of the ninth and the morning of the tenth that things became much more worrisome.

She woke up, frantic and shaken as she woke him up and begged with him to promise her that they weren't going to the party.

What party she was talking about he wasn't really quite sure and tried to calm her by explaining they had no invitation to a party but she just scavenged the whole house the entire day searching for it.

He spent the day trying to think of what she could be talking about before she approached him about six in the evening, relieved to see him and hugged him close asking that he stay here with her instead of going to Mark's party.

He was confused but agreed and they spent the evening together.

It wasn't until 1:30 in the morning that Cassidy finally crashed and slept.

Damien was woken up by her at 8:30 and he just kind of watched her stumble around like she had a hangover before getting up and helping her to the bathroom as she was sick to her stomach.

He sat with her and tended to her every need but he knew something was seriously wrong when she screamed in the other room but when he ran to her, she was just shaking like a leaf as something had fallen over, startling her but... The look on her face looked like she'd seen a ghost.

She was out of it all day, occasionally asking random questions about people he hadn't seen in ages. About William, Celine, and Mark.

She refused to leave his side the entire day, refused to let him be alone in a single room for too long, scared he'd disappear or something.

Neither of them really slept that night but he must have at some point as he woke up to Cassidy nowhere in sight and found her walking around in a daze. She wouldn't respond to him no matter what he tried.

Kept muttering something about the Colonel did it.

He spent the whole day trying to get her to respond or stop moving around, trying to keep her safe.

At least he was until she suddenly stiffened, her hands flying around her waist as if something struck her and blacked out, falling backward.

He thanked the heavens that he had caught her before she hit the ground.

He rushed her to the nearest doctor when she didn't wake up and actually started to have trouble breathing.

So here he sat.

Watching her lay in a hospital bed with a mask forcing her to breathe as she laid in a dead sleep.

The doctors were doing everything they could but they couldn't find anything physically wrong with her.

So it became a waiting game.

How long would she be out? How long would he have to wait for her chocolate brown eyes to meet his own again? How long until he could hear her voice? How long until she-

He took a shaky breath at the thought, closing his eyes.

No... She had to wake up. She had to. She just had to. Because-

He looked at her again, tears running down his face, his thumb rubbing against the ring around a silver chain subconsciously.

Because she was his everything.
