Figurative Language
Hello! I hope y'all are having a good morning/afternoon/evening/night.
Figurative language is basically how the author conveys a deeper meaning of a book. 'Figurative' is the opposite of literal, meaning it's a symbolic, non-tangible way to make your story deeper.
Personification: The act of giving human or 'living' traits to inanimate objects. Ex: The wind whispering to the trees, the shadows crawling across the ground, etc.
Simile: A comparison using the words 'like' or 'as'. Ex: She was as tall as a giraffe.
Metaphor: A comparison without using 'like' or 'as'. Ex: His eyes were diamonds.
Allusion: An external allusion is making a reference to a well known movie, show, celebrity, piece of art, piece of literature, etc. An internal allusion is making a reference to previous points within the story. Ex: (External) He was so buff he might as well have been named Dwayne. (Internal) "This is exactly like Budapest!" (From The Avengers- this is internal because it was referencing itself. If another movie referenced this, it would be external).
Imagery: Descriptive language meant to make the reader have a clear picture of what's going on. Ex: The night made the moonlit trees rise like looming silhouettes.
Symbolism: The use of objects, ideas, words, actions, or characters beyond their literal meaning. Ex: The mockingbird being a symbol of innocence in To Kill A Mockingbird
Motif: A recurring idea, theme, action, sound, or phrase that supports the theme. Ex: It always rains before someone dies. The conch shell from Lord of the Flies.
Irony: Irony is one of those things where a lot of people think they know it, but they really don't. Basically, irony is a difference between expectation and reality. There's verbal irony, which is using words in non-literal way (like sarcasm). Then you have dramatic irony, which is when the audience knows something the character doesn't (like if a book switches perspectives to the Big Bad Villain and learns their evil plan, but the Super Duper Good Guy had no clue what said plan is). Finally, there's situational irony, in which when something happens that wasn't the expected result (like a fire station burning down).
Allegory: A story within a story. This usually has something to do with politics, religion, or morality, and can be obvious or subtle. Ex: Neighbors throwing rocks at each other can be an allegory for warring countries.
Point of View: This has to do with what perspective the story is from. There's third person (my personal favorite!), second person (this doesn't get used often at all), and first person. Third person: he, she, they. Second person: You. First person: I. Ex: She saw a bee vs. You saw a bee vs. I saw a bee.
Onomatopoeia: I will never learn how to spell this correctly. These are words to describe ✨sounds✨ in literature. Ex: Bang! Bam! Boom! Crack! Woof! Crash!
