Commonly Confused Words
Hello there! Here are some commonly confused words that, once you learn them, become really useful in strengthening your story and keeping your reader engaged! If you ever need more clarification with any chapters, feel free to message me.
There vs Their vs They're
There: A location. Think of it as there, like you're arriving at your destination
Their: Indicating possession. Think of it as their, like you own something.
They're: Abbreviation for 'they are'. If you're unsure whether it fits, replace it with 'they are'. Ex: They're running to the park. They are running to the park. They're dog is missing. They are dog is missing. See how the second one doesn't fit? In that case, due to the dog being the person's possession or property, you would use 'their' instead.
Your vs You're
Your: Use this version anytime 'you're' doesn't fit
You're: Abbreviation for 'you are'. Like 'they're', replace it with 'you are' to see if it fits.
Whose vs Who's
Whose: Indication, implication, or question of possession. Ex: Whose crayons are these?
Who's: Abbreviation for 'who is'. Use the replacing technique. Ex: "Who's the manager?"
Affect vs Effect
I'm going to be completely honest, these two give me a lot of trouble! How I try to understand it is that affect is the action actively occurring, and effect is the result or end. I don't know if that makes sense. Hopefully it did.
To vs Too vs Two
To: Use if 'too' doesn't apply.
Too: It basically can be replaced with 'also'. It means agreement or that something is synonymous with one another. Ex: "I like his shirt!" "Oh, really? I like his shirt too!"
Two: Numerical amount. Ex: "I see two roses in the garden."
There will likely be a part two, and maybe a part three depending on how many more I find. I use the replacement technique all the time and it works really well. Substituting the word with equivalent phrases has always been a go-to for me. A little note on the abbreviated words like 'you're', 'they're', etc: Always put the apostrophe! It makes your writing look so much better. The apostrophe indicates that two words are being mashed into one, which means it's important!
Anyway, as always, always feel free to comment some more tips. I have several chapters lined up but one can never have too many tips. Maybe one can. I don't know pfft just ignore my rambling and comment.
