Chapter 2
"Honey I'm going to work now, okay!?" Chanyeol called from the other room, and Baekhyun replied with an approving grunt.
The latter was buried in his college homework (yeah, he was still in school, fuck school honestly) and his husband of two years was the only one keeping them financially stable.
An hour later, Baekhyun realized that he had a project he could finish only with his blue pen-which was his super lucky pen that he never let out of his sight but for some reason forgot about it earlier in the week-and he realized he had left his blue pen in Chanyeol's office!
He grabbed his jacket and hopped on the bus, using his student card to get to Chanyeol's building.
-
"Oh hey Kyungsoo," Chanyeol greeted, sorting his papers on his desk.
"Hey, I have a document that you need to sign," he stated, walking up to the other.
Chanyeol decided to make it easier for the man (and he got a new rolling chair the other day) so on that particular day he rolled away from his desk and to Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo laughed and, while distracted, stepped and slipped on Baekhyun's blue pen that was on the ground and fell. He fell onto Chanyeol and their lips met the exact moment the door opened.
"Oh my gOd!!!!" Baekhyun screamed and Chanyeol himself was yelling, pushing Kyungsoo off of him. "What the FUcK, Chanyeol!"
"Holy shit—" Chanyeol said before quickly collecting himself, "Baekhyun, I swear, this scene is normally entirely fucking impossible but it somehow happened and—"
"I'm breaking up with you!"
Baekhyun ran out of the room crying.
As he was running out of the building, a robber happened to want to steal the expensive watch on Baekhyun's wrist, and stabbed him.
"NOOOOOOO!!!!" Chanyeol screamed, when he saw the sight of Baekhyun on the sidewalk. He had followed his husband—his love—his liFE, only to see him dead on the ground.
Kyungsoo came running to Chanyeol and gasped. Turning, he looked into the distance and into the camera y'know like in The Office, "Look what you just did author," Kyungsoo said, shaking his head. "Baekhyun's dead. What kind of coincidence was that?"
(also why does it always end with baekhyun dying? because that's the only thing i see in chanbaek fics okay—)
You right
Yes
What kind of coincidence was that
What kind, you ask?
I like to call those... "Reaching" Coincidences.
When would that ever happen???
I do agree, sometimes crazy things happen that seem completely planned, but that's like 1/100000000 of the times! It's so very cringe-y when this type of stuff happens, ESPECIALLY when it's apart of the main plot.
If you wanted a coincidence in your book, it's fine if it's something that could... actually happen. Not "Baekhyun forgets his blue pen that he needs in Chanyeol's office and arrives exactly at the millisecond where Kyungsoo slips on said pen and falls into Chanyeol's lap unrealistically and kisses him and then a robber decides to rob him that day and he dies"
That just doesn't happen, you know what I mean?
But you know what could happen? If one small coincidence made the rest of the things happen because of a character's thoughts/insecurities. Now that makes sense
Please refrain from putting too many convenient coincidences in your stories, because that's exactly what I did and it ends up... nah
If you keep writing convenient, or "reaching" coincidences, then the readers will soon not even see it as a coincidences anymore.
If you imagined your book to be a river or some shit that flows, and we want our river to keep flowing normally, so adding coincidences like that is just like... bad. It's like if your river was going in a direction you didn't want it to so you take some sticks and really badly make a blockage to change how it goes, but there's holes n stuff and the water is still going but the majority of it is going the other way and your readers are swimming in the river and are like wtf is going oN what is this why is it HERE
k that was the worst analogy but
:)
MOVING ON
Clichés!
I love this topic
Mostly because:
Is calling a story cliché a bad or good thing? Is the word cliché itself negative or positive?
Well google
fuck you google
I honestly think having a "cliché story" isn't a bad thing
I LoVe a typical nerd x jock or bad boy x good boy or hate-love relationship (like fuckin yes, those are my life)
And I love typical scenes where they bump into each other or they accidentally idk pick the wrong person for their blind date
I don't think it takes away any creativity from the story or author however you want to see it
They're cliché usually because they actually happen or because it's just such a lovely thought and like yes! Write what you think is nice
And I may have mentioned this before, but a story could have a cliché plot but be the most unique fucking thing ever
That all depends on the writer and the little things they add to the story to make it theirs
See, being cliché and plagiarizing is a completely different thing lmAo
And I mean, unless it's your sole purpose to have cliché scene after cliché scene in your book, you usually stray from cliché after you get over the major parts of it
if that makes any sense
I feel like these days we're all thinking: Oh this needs to be completely original, I have to be unique, I can't have a story remotely similar to another. Omg, someone has the same base plot, I gotta rEwrite!
Like no
That kind of thought brings about names like "Saswatinaper Holrendar" because they don't want to be "typical" and name their character "Rose Thomas" or some other common name
Who even cares if it's Rose or Saswatinaper (actually I do because pls don't name your character Saswatinaper just because you don't wanna be like others unless that's a name that could actually be used for your story)
You could have the most unique plot ever but fuck it up
You could have the most cliché plot and also fuck it up
It's... the same thing
I don't know where I was going with this
Cliché's okay, as long as you sprinkle a lil of your own imagination and story in there
And if your story is supposed to be hate-love nerd jock? So be it! I love that stuff!
If your story is supposed to be about two angels who get stuck on earth, so be it! That is literally the plot to my story—
But hear me out
Just hear me out
So, I wanna be very original and unique and amazing, so we have a Saswatinaper Holrendar who's a werewolf, but not just an ordinary werewolf because we aren't "ordinary" like that. This is a werewolf who is also a vampire/angel/demon/demon hunter/baker/soccer player/math teacher/Voldemort and their appearance? Super unique. One blue eye one bright pink eye and let's see, all the hair on this person's head are different colours. This story is about how Saswatinaper finds love, but not just ordinary love, it's a love with a curse because we can't have people falling in love normally pft that's so five-years-ago. Basically this curse turns Saswatinaper into a mermaid of opposite gender, but not just a mermaid, but also Einstein/Beethoven/pop idol/cartoon character/hot person/normal person/coffee maker/vacuum/toilet seat/toothbrush/washroom/water/river
We somehow got back to the river analogy
You wanna make your book flow y'all. Forcing your characters into unnatural roles just because you want them/your story to be different is terrible.
There has to be a reason for the elements you put into your story. You can't just casually toss in the fact that your main character's a cannibal but heh, it's okay because we'll never hear about it again it has no point to the story. That will make your story very confusing and hard to follow
Take, for example, "Take a Chance" chapter 2. Baekhyun has a crush on this girl named Han Na. That's it.
One random line, plugged into the story
We never hear about her again
Ye I suck okay?
Anyway, this was a long chapter but maybe it was necessary maybe it was not. I didn't really mention any tips but hopefully it was at least amusing to read
Moral of the story: don't create coincidences just because it's convenient to you and your story if it makes no sense, it's okay to be cliché sometimes, and Saswatinaper is my greatest creation guys
ur -10 writer is oot.
