Su Su's Day

"Hello, Mrs. Su Su!" a familiar voice woke me from my peaceful sleep. I looked up at my human, and she smiled at me. "Did you sleep well? I missed you."

"You didn't sleep with me," I complained, meowing in my raspy voice over and over as she went over to the fridge.

"I know, I know," she told me and petted me after pulling out a protein shake. My human walked back to the couch, grabbing the green iPad on her way. I jumped on her lap the second she sat down, and she poked my nose before turning on her screen. I sank into the soft warmth of her lap as she drank her breakfast, and I savored the moment. She only woke up early on days she had to go away for what felt like eternity.

My human screwed the lid onto her empty protein shake and smiled sadly at me. "I wish I could just stay here with you and Steve, huh Su?" she murmured and pat my head, ending her sentence with a common phrase. I never paid enough attention to know what it meant. But I caught Steve's name. He was her other favorite, me of course being her first. Dot and Glory came after Steve. Ew, Dot. She was always trying to take my place as the alpha cat. And she was grumpy, hairless, fat, and stinky. My human always said I was the best cat; she even sang songs about it. They aren't very good though.

However, I enjoyed her warmth, but the time where she had to go always came too soon. I took her place on the couch and watched her walked off. She finished getting ready in a rush, and left with her older sister. She didn't even say goodbye. Sometimes she did that. I knew that the longer the goodbye, the longer she'd be gone.

I curled onto the cushion and swiftly fell asleep. I dreamed of sitting with my human, and purring on her lap as she played her video games. She'd pet me whenever she could tear her eyes from the screen, and I'd crawl up her shoulder into her cavern of hair. True bliss.

A jingling startled me awake. I looked to my right, at the big, sparkly tree. I jumped off the couch and to the base of the tree, to find Steve gnawing on its plastic bristles.

"You're not supposed to do that," I mewed.

He chewed for a bit longer, then mumbled, "the humans aren't even here, so it's fine." Steve resumed his activity that would only end in vomit.

I shook my tail in a shrug. It wasn't my problem, and Steve would only stop if he wanted to or if the humans got mad at him.

Steve looked at me with his one yellow and green eye. "It's really good; you should try it."

I rolled my eyes and stalked back to my spot on the couch, wishing my human would come home. It felt like I never got to sit with her. She was almost always getting up, or petting Steve on the floor, or playing a game where she wouldn't let me sit on her lap. And then she was always away at the place called school. Sometimes it was so hard being a cat, always having to stay at home and never be with your human who so dearly enjoys being with you.

I closed my eyes, but couldn't seem to fall asleep. So I wandered the house. I ate some food, being careful to retain my ladylike posture.

The house was bright with light streaming through the windows. Dot sat on a windowsill by the food bowls, basking in the sun with her eyes closed. Glory, the other, more stinky, hairless cat, was likely sleeping in her human's room. Steve tried to jump on the window with Dot, but she growled and smacked at him. He just moved to the other end of the window.

I wandered a while longer, played with a paperclip I found on the floor, then sat on a windowsill by the big door. I'd nearly fallen asleep when a tapping on the window roused me. I looked out at the bright outside wearily, and there was my human. She smiled at me, and I heard the beep, beebeep, beeeep, click of the electronic lock and the door swung open.

"Hello, Mrs. Su Su!" my human gasped in happiness and gently pat my head. Joy swelled in my heart, though I hardly showed it. She smiled and put away her bag and shoes, then went to the sink to wash her hands.

"Aye, it's a wee bit chilly outside," she murmured to all the cats in range, then went to sit down. I tried to sit on her lap, but my human was already busy with her iPad's game that she played every day after school, then again later after she played her other games. She often told me her worries about the happenings of these games. I knew they were important to her, but I had no idea what she was talking about.

I tried to get on her lap again and again, but she hunched over the screen, tapping tapping tapping it. And when she was done, I followed her to her seat to play other video games. Luckily I could sit on her lap for these ones, but she got annoyed when I got in her way too much, demanding the cuddles I deserved. She'd either pet me or say, "No, Su," and stare at the screen. Sometimes I'd stay and purr, other times I'd sit somewhere else. The latter seemed to upset her. She was always asking for me and Steve to sit by her, and as much as I loved doing that, sometimes I just didn't want to. My human would say that it's odd how opinions can change so quickly.

The rest of the day was like always. My human tried to sneak me to the dinner table, but would fail. She'd spend more time on the iPad later, but for most of that I could sit with her. We'd sit and sit for so long. My human would smile and pet my small head, all the way until she had to get up again. It was usually dark by now, so it was bedtime. My human tried to pick me up to go to bed, but I ran around the legs of the chairs of the tables. She'd sigh and go down the stairs without me. If I really wanted to I'd go down and meow at her door, but that was pretty rare. But it looked like tonight I'd sleep by myself. I curled into my human's spot on the couch, and fell asleep once again.
