Mystery of Monsters

Characters:

Oria (ah-rye-ah): Heir to the throne, a sweet and caring girl, make sure things get done right, a bit sassy and humorous but is serious when she needs to be.

Ecko (echo(eck-oh)): Son of the first guard of the ruler and is the first guard of the heir. He's very quiet and serious.

Setting:

A silver palace in the center of a kingdom floating in space. It's very early in the morning, and the time is in the present.

Scene 1: Our characters stand on a large, semi-circle balcony with simple, silver, loopy railings, outlooking the starry sky. Oria has just dragged Ecko onto the balcony. He seems confused.

Ecko What is it?

Oria We need to talk.

Ecko About . . . what?

Oria (walks toward the edge of the balcony) You can't guess?

Ecko (walks up beside her and shakes head)

Oria (sighs) Well, it's not anything that would make Remus nervous, so you don't have to look so pale.

Ecko Whatever you're poking at, don't think I understand it. We both

know there's more pressing things than Remus. And I'm not

pale.

Oria Everyone's pale. Someone being not pale would be as crazy as the

sky being blue.

Ecko (stares without expression)

Oria That was a joke.

Ecko (no expression) Ha ha.

Oria (disappointed) You're no fun.

Ecko I get that a lot.

Oria (sighs) I suppose in a way it's a good thing. Sometimes we need people like that. We need to talk about those monsters, the ones in the library.

Ecko What about them?

Oria Two people of my kingdom have died because of them. We have to stop them. So I was thinking . . . that perhaps . . . there's something more to this.

Ecko Like there's something controlling them?

Oria Something like that.

Ecko A ruler of monsters . . . how strange.

Oria Indeed . . . but I think, I think, that if we can find their ruler, and defeat it, we could save the kingdom from catastrophe.

Ecko You think they'll strike again?

Oria We have to be prepared for anything.

Ecko And I'm assuming that you want to take down their ruler before that happens.

Oria Well, of course! I mean, there are lives at stake here.

Ecko So where do we start?

Oria I was hoping . . . that you might have some ideas.

Ecko Why would I? You're the one who knows about magic and stuff like that.

Oria But you are the master strategist! You can beat anything or anyone with anything!

Ecko That's pushing it a bit far . . .

Oria Stop it with your humbleness, you know I'm right.

Ecko (sighs) Well, do you know if anything like this has happened before?

Oria Unfortunately, no . . . but I also have a feeling that this is something that my mom wouldn't want to tell me about. I can't blame her; those things were . . . terrifying.

Ecko (nods solemnly)

Oria Ooh! What about the library?

Ecko Even if we could get in, would there be any books on those things?

Oria Assuming that this may have happened before, then we could probably find something in a history book or whatever.

Ecko Right. Then how do we get in? The library's been closed off ever since the monsters appeared in there.

Oria Well I don't think it was the library that made them. We at least know that.

Ecko We do technically know how they came about. Would that prove your theory wrong?

Oria I don't know . . . but why would they appear like that and attack people if they were just mindless blobs? I'm telling you, they can't be a coincidence.

Ecko (nods) But still, is it safe to go in there? Plus, it's a relatively public place. I feel like there wouldn't be anything on monsters in there.

Oria True . . . but wait! There's a secret library on the top floor of the castle!

Ecko You think that'll have what we need?

Oria (rolls eyes) Why would it be a secret library if there wasn't something people aren't supposed to know about in it? I'm pretty sure monsters fall into that category.

Ecko (shrugs) I suppose it's worth a shot.

Oria Of course it is, I'm a genius. Now, let's go!

Both (run off stage)
