Good, Neutral, and Bad Days
Writing Prompt: A former genius has to cope with being less than stellar after an accident that causes brain damage.
Found prompt on Reddit.
Ship: Subthan (SubZeroExtabyte and 5m, aka Ethan)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If Ethan had one wish, he knew exactly what he would wish for.
He would wish that "The Accident" never happened.
God, he wished that he could wish for that.
If the Accident had never happened, then Sub would still be Sub.
But now Sub spent his days staring at the wall, not speaking to anyone.
Then again, he never had been able to speak.
But Ethan couldn't get a single sign out of him most days.
Ethan felt guilty. He should have been there, he should have been there to help Sub, to protect him from that crazy pyscho with the gun.
Sub had been lucky to make it out alive, but his brain didn't exactly leave the hospital in one piece.
Now Ethan's days were seperated into three types.
There were good days.
"Hi, Ethan."
"Hey, Sub. You okay?"
"I think so. I think everything's working today."
"Good. Come on, let's go to the park or something. Get out of the house."
"Okay."
There were the neutral days.
"Hey, Sub, you still need to eat."
"Sub, you need to go to sleep."
"Sub, are you going to talk to me?
And then there were the awful days.
"Who the hell are you?"
"Sub, it's Ethan."
"I don't know an Ethan."
"Yes, you do. You just don't remember."
"No! I don't know you! Leave me alone!"
It killed Ethan on those days. After all they'd been through together...and some days Sub could wake up not remembering any of it. Like the Sub that Ethan had grown up with, the Sub that Ethan had fallen in love with, for God's sake, could disappear at any given moment.
Ethan wasn't sure if the part of Sub's brain that remembered what he had been before the accident was still there, or if it had been blown out by the bullet.
The god-forsaken bullet.
Sub had been pretty much a genius when it came to animating. People called him a prodigy. Ethan's earliest memory of Sub was the time when they were seven, and Sub showed him a messily drawn flipbook with stop-motion animations. Pretty good for a seven-year-old.
And he just got better. Hell, he was going to go to some special college whose name Ethan couldn't remember full scholarship.
And then the Accident came, and Sub's entire future came crashing down around him.
Ethan shook his head. All this parading around in his mind, and it wasn't even nine in the morning yet.
He knocked softly on Sub's door, unsure what to expect, and pushed it open.
No way for Sub to tell him to come in through a door, anyway.
Ethan saw Sub sitting on the edge of his bed, the back of his head facing Ethan.
Neutral day.
Ethan cautiously walked around to Sub's side, putting his hand on Sub's shoulder. "Hey, Sub."
Sub looked over at Ethan, and Ethan was surprised to see that Sub's face was tear-streaked, fresh tears brimming in his eyes.
"Sub, what's wrong?"
"Why do you put up with me, Ethan?" Sub signed.
Ethan was taken aback for a second. "What are you talking about?"
"You know what I'm talking about. Why do you put up with me? I'm worthless without my animation, and all I knew about animation was blown out of my head. I make you miserable because sometimes I can't even remember who you are-"
Ethan grabbed Sub's wrist, stopping him from signing anything else. "Hey, don't beat yourself up. You're more than just your animation skills."
Sub shook Ethan's hands off of his wrist. "Yeah, now there's a bullet there, too."
"Stop it, Sub. I mean it."
"So do I."
"Look. I don't put up with you. I care about you. Would I go back and make the Accident never happen if I could? Yeah. Would I be willing to take your place so you wouldn't have to deal with it? Of course."
"But why? I'm not special."
"That's where you're wrong. There's only one Sub that I've known since first grade, and he's you. Even if you can't remember sometimes, we've been through more together than I have with anyone else. "
Sub turned away from Ethan, staring at the wall again. "What if one day you finally figure out I'm not worth it? What if I wake up one morning and you're gone? I'll lose my mind, even more than I already have."
"Hey. Look at me." Ethan said, taking hold of Sub's hand. "I promise, I won't leave you, okay? I'll make sure you're okay."
Sub stared at Ethan's hand in his, and gave him a half-smile. He pulled away, and signed, "Thank you."
Good day.
"No problem, Sub." Ethan smiled, and hugged him. "You know I love you, right?"
Sub nodded, returning the hug.
When Ethan let go, he signed, "I love you, too."
Too bad that Sub couldn't remember this moment the next morning.
Bad day.

I wanted to post this new one-shot since most of you guys have already read Dark Red Eyes, and I realized that I forgot to mention one rule with this book.
I will not accept any inappropriate writing prompts. I'd like to keep this book as clean as possible!
Also, you can thank @Aleatoraye for making me ship this. Seriously, if you want feels on this particular ship, go to her YouTube channel and look up "Limelight", "Ghost of You", and the "Endstone" speedart. Those are the ones that have given me the most feels on this.
Anyways, I think that's all for now! Remember to leave a prompt and a ship (if you want) in the comments, and I'll see you all later! Byyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeee!
