"Hey, come look at this!"

Louise walked up to her best friend who was standing near the wooden fence in the backyard, holding a large cup in her hands. She looked at her with a hint of suspicion and worry as her friend never seemed to have good intentions when wearing a mischievous grin.

"Olivia, you really shouldn't mess with my mom's paint water. Where did you even get that from? What if you spill it or-"

"Ah, Louise, you worry too much." Olivia flicked a hand at her. "Plus, it's Ollie, not Olivia."

"Yknow, you keep telling people that, but everyone is going to call you Olivia anyways."

Her best friend ignored her like always since the other tends to show more brazen tendencies in almost every situation. Being a rebellion-driven kid, Olivia went through a tomboy phase where she styled her hair differently and preferred to go by a more boyish name.

Olivia dove a hand into the dark, murky water and began dragging her hand onto the fence, staining the wood with the liquid in some places.

"Ollie, what are you doing?!" She yelped, taking the cup from her and nearly spilling it onto the ground in her haste.

"I'm painting a heart onto the fence! What does it look like?"

"But I thought you didn't like hearts."

"Yeah, but I know you do!"

"Aww, that's so nice!"

"Do you want to paint something too before your mom finds out we took the cup?" The tomboy asked her. Louise, although not being one to be disobedient, decided to dip a finger in and join in on the fun.

"Isn't this fun?" She asked.

"Yeah, it is!" Louise giggled. "This is fun."

"This is fun."

"Who are you talking to? "

Louise turned her head around to see her mother standing behind her, a look of confusion evident on her face.

"Honey, there's no one there and it's chilly out here. Who are you talking to?"

"It's... It's nothing." She responded, taking her hand off of the fence and following her mother back inside. Her eyes went back to the heart as the girl stood in the doorway. As her mother said, there was nobody there with her. Louise shook her head and went inside.

No matter how much she believed, there wouldn't and never be anyone there.

She just had to learn to move on.
