Plot - Within a Season
Okay *rolls out checklist scroll* So, we've established your character, who portrays them, and we've touched on description.
Now, it's time for the biggie. The plot.
The plot holds as much importance (if not more importance) as its characters. With fan fiction, there's a tough choice: "Do I stick with an original plot I have in mind or do I push my character into a season of Supernatural?"
Decisions, decisions.
We'll get to original plot in the next part. We shall stick with fanfics within a Supernatural season.
My findings from what I've observed:
*Fanfics range from seasons.
*Most are part of a trilogy/series which cover a variety of seasons.
I am one of many who have written in a show season. So far, I have written in Seasons 5, 8-11. I have yet to write in Seasons 2-4. (9 through 11 are a trilogy. The one set in 2-3, 4, 5, and 8 are stand alone books.)
Should you choose to place your character within a season of Supernatural, consider the following:
How does my OC fit?
What part do they play in this?
Where in the season do they fit? Some characters you just know what season they're destined to be in.
What path (or paths) do they take? (Because we all know Supernatural gives us a lot to work with, some seasons more than others.)
Don't just throw your character in randomly. Smooth them into the plot, ease them in. Don't suddenly toss them into battle. You want them to feel like, should they have been an actual character on the show, they belong there. Like they don't stick out in the sense of "What the hell are they doing there? They have no business there!"
If the character doesn't fit in, you'll know. If you try to make it work and it doesn't, your readers may start to pick up on it too. Placement is crucial.
P.S. A good tip for the above: find an episode to use as your character's integration.
The story doesn't have to start in the first episode of the season, either. You dictate where it goes. There aren't any laws that say "Oh, you're doing a fanfic in this season? Well, you gotta start from the first episode and roll right through until the end."
It's also okay to skip episodes in your story. If you're one of those people who disagrees with me, you probably just cringed. But seriously, it's okay. Not all episodes are gonna mean a lot to help your character through the season.
Tip for the above: Go through the episodes and figure out which ones will be necessary to write out. Discard the ones your story will live without.
And it's okay to add on your own twist into the story line. As much as people love to follow the season episode by episode, giving the season a break within the book gives you the opportunity to add in an original chapter, one that doesn't follow any transcript.
P.S. Those are a great way to transition from one episode into the next with a little break :)
If it turns out that your character(s) doesn't(don't) belong in a season, then it's a better option if they end up in an original plot line of your own creation.
Thinker: Favorite season? Is that the season your fanfic is based in? If you were to write a fanfic, what season would you write it in?
