19. Making Important Arrangements

Frank's POV

Letter 140
We have 10 more letter until we reach 150, Gee. I was thinking... for 150, what if we meet back up in the supply closet? I'll give it to you right there, and you can read it right in front of me. It'll be a small thing, but so special. Let me know if you want to do this. Love you.

Setting the paper down on the table, I paced back and forth in the room. I'm actually doing this, I thought to myself.

In a few weeks, me and Gerard will have known each other for seven months. We'll have been dating for most of that time. I knew I wanted something big for 200, but I had only now planned it all out.

I was going to text Gerard when I finished writing my 150th letter, and he would meet me in the supply closet.

I would give him the letter, and he would read through it. I planned on leaving it open ended, so he would have to ask what it meant.

At that point, I knew, would be the right time to propose to him.

I know six months isn't that far into a relationship, but I truly couldn't imagine myself with anyone else besides Gerard. I've thought a long time about whether or not I would want to get married yet, and I've finally made my decision.

At letter 150, we would be a little over halfway through college. If I proposed to him then, it would give us six months to plan a wedding. That was of course, if he said yes. I wanted to do the wedding right after we got out of college, and I wanted my vows to be on that 200th letter.

I knew I didn't have any reason to worry. If anything, he would just explain that he's not ready for that long term commitment yet. I had thought about the rational options in my head though, and I was pretty sure he would say yes.

Today I would go out and make all those preparations, starting with a text.

Me: Hey Gee, I know you're almost out of class. I'm going to go walk around campus to talk to some people, if that's alright.

Gerard: That's fine, Frankie. I'll be waiting for you when you get back. :)

I put my phone away and grabbed my things. I made an edit out the door and immediately began walking towards my old dorm.

Knocking on the familiar door, I waited until Corey opened it. "Hey Frank, what do you need?" He asked when he saw that it was me outside.

"Can I talk to you?"

"Sure. Come in," he said while waving his hand in the direction of the room. I stepped inside and sat on a stool, him sitting down right next to me. "So what do you need to talk about?"

"It's actually a pretty important topic, so I need your input on a few things."

"Ok, go ahead. I'm all ears."

I took a deep breath and steadied myself before speaking up. "I want to propose to Gerard. I wanted to ask for your approval first, because I know you did a lot for him in high school. I know you care about him a lot, so I figured I'd talk to you first."

He stared at me for awhile, before a smile broke out onto his face. "Really?" I nodded. "Oh my god, Frank, this is going to make him so happy! Come here." He stood up and gave me a tight hug before patting me on the back. "Of course man, I'm so happy for your decision."

"Thank you so much, Corey. I promise I won't disappoint you."

"Well of course you wouldn't, otherwise I'd have to find you and deal with it!" He laughed and I laughed as well, although my laugh was more nervous than amused.

"Alright well, thanks Corey. I'm off to find out who I need to tell next."

I ended up passing Mikey on the way to Lindsey's dorm, so I decided to tell him there. He accepted it and said he was happy for me, but that he would hurt me if I ever broke Gerard's heart. I understood that. Sibling love I guess.

When I reached Lindsey's room, I knocked lightly on it and waited for her to open the door. When she did, she flashed a small smile at me. "Hey, Frank. I wasn't expecting you, come in." I stepped inside and leaned against the wall as she closed the door.

"Lindsey I want to propose to Gerard," I said quickly to get it out of the way. I was looking down, and when I looked up I noticed her eyes tearing up. "Did... did I do something wrong?" I asked shyly.

"No Frank oh god no, you did nothing wrong." She quickly wrapped me into a hug, and I hugged her back, slightly confused. "I'm just so overwhelmed and happy at the same time. I'm so glad that Gee has finally found someone who makes him as happy as you do, Frank."

I felt a tear roll down my face after that, but I quickly wiped it away. "So I actually came here to ask if you could help me shop for some things. You know him better than anyone here, so I think you'd know what ring he'd like, or at least the general idea."

"Frankie, I think he'll be happy with any ring you give him, but I'd be honored to help you pick one out. When do you want to go?"

"I was thinking we could run down to the jewelry store right now maybe? I know it's sudden, but Gee is out right now so there's really no better time to do it."

"Of course, lets go." She pulled her jacket on and walked with me until we reached the jewelry store.

I looked around at all the rings they had available. Some of them had golden bands while the others had silver. Some of the bands were plain while others had jewels crested on every single space of them. I looked at all the little gemstones and admired each one separately.

The ruby one reminded me of Party Poison, the character Gerard had made. I considered that, but kept looking. There was a sapphire one, similar to the color of a blue rose. It was stunning, but not quite what I wanted.

Many other gemstones came in to place but I couldn't quite decide which one would be perfect, until Lindsey pointed out the ideal ring. "That one would be good, I'm certain." She pointed to a silver ring, banded with small diamond fragments, a black onyx gem as the centerpiece. (There's a picture of the ring at the end of this chapter.)

"Oh my god, Gee would love this." I observed the ring through the window, taking in every single detail that emitted from it. "This is the one. I'm sure."  I smiled up at Lindsey, and she nodded, giving me her approval.

"It'll be about 450 dollars probably. Do you have that much? I can help you out if you need."

"Thank's Linds, but I have enough." I had worked gigs at the campus café over the past week, and I've made enough tips to last me awhile. I made sure to get enough that way I could afford any ring that I found suitable for Gerard.

"Can I help you buy anything, sir?" A woman at the counter asked, noticing me looking at the display cases.

"Yes, actually," I replied while standing up straight. "I was interested in buying that silver ring with the black onyx." I pointed to the ring I wanted, and she took it out, placing it on the counter.

"You can take a closer look at it before making your final decision."

I eyed every detail on the ring and knew that it would be perfect. The way the diamonds refracted light and displayed so many different colors at once was mesmerizing. It was almost like Gerard's chameleon sky, but put into the form of a ring. Almost perfectly, the black onyx tied it all together, being that black was made of all the colors in art when you mixed them up. I only started considering color patterns because of Gerard, and if he hadn't told me about what was happening in his mind, I would've been completely lost in this situation.

"Yes. This is the one I want," I concluded.

"Good choice! The price is $430. Would you like to pick out a box to go with that?"

"Sure," I replied gratefully. I looked over all the boxes and beamed when I saw the perfect one. It was a black velvet box with a white interior design. It was gorgeous. "This one here," I pointed through the glass.

She picked up the box, placing the ring carefully. She wore gloves to prevent getting smudges or dirt on the ring, which I was grateful for. I wanted it to be in top condition when I gave it to Gerard.

"Okay, with the box included, that brings your total up to $460."

I took out my wallet and began searching through it to find the right amount of money. I had recently gone to the bank to withdrawal money from the savings account, so I didn't have to pay with one dollar bills that customers tipped me with.

When I had gotten out $500, I slid the money over the counter to her. She put it away and gave me $40 as change, and put the box in another box to protect it from damage. "So are you proposing to someone?" She asked as she handed me the ring.

I put the ring in my jacket pocket, not wanting to bring attention to it if I happened to pass Gerard through the campus. "Yeah actually, I'm proposing to my boyfriend in about a week from now!"

"Oh my god, I'm so happy for the both of you!" She squealed excitedly. She looked like she had just gotten out of college, so she was still young. "I love working here because I get to see all the people come in when they're about to propose to someone they love. It's truly a beautiful thing."

"Thank you! I'm very excited for it, but also nervous I guess? I don't know, just jitters, but I assume that's how everyone feels when they're about to do this type of thing."

"Well of course. I remember when I first proposed to my girlfriend, I couldn't hardly even breath for that whole day! It's a scary thing, but it'll be so worth it in the end. Just don't sweat it."

"Well I guess we'll be on our way now, thank you for your help," I stated.

"No problem. Feel free to come back when you're picking out your wedding rings!" She said excitedly as we walked out of the store.

"Well she was excited," I told Lindsey, causing us both to laugh.

"Very. Where to next?"

"Flower shop? There's one down the street."

"Of course, lets go."

We walked down the road until we reached a small flower store. When we walked inside, a little bell rang signaling our presence. A woman, probably a few years younger than us, came to the counter. "Anything I can help you with, today?"

"Hi, yeah, we're from the art school down the street. I've come here today to pick out some flowers for my boyfriend actually."

"I think I can help you out," she replied. "Art school, eh? What type of art?"

"Well, I'm a musician and my boyfriend is a comic artist. Lindsey over here builds sculptures, and she also does painting," I explained.

"I see. Visual arts. Tell me, is he big on color theory? I know a lot of artists who practically use color theory as a bible of sorts. It's kind of insane."

"I'm um... not actually sure what color theory is," I replied looking down.

"Are you serious, Frank?" Lindsey asked, shock apparent in her voice. "You don't know what color theory is?"

"Nope."

"It's basically how colors work together and stuff. I'll help you out with the whole color sorting thing. But yeah," she started, turning her attention back to the woman at the counter, "Gee is very big on color theory. Obsessed with it actually."

"I see," the woman replied. "I only know a little bit about it, but I'm sure it could be helpful in picking flowers for this situation. Got any ideas?"

"What do you think, Frank?" Lindsey asked, looking over at me.

"I was thinking of getting three different colors, but I want them to be close to each other. I don't want some insane looking colorful bundle. Something nice and simple."

"Hmm..." Lindsey thought for a good minute, looking around in the shop while thinking. "I've got an idea. I think pink roses would be a good option. Three different types of pink, however. I think we should have normal pink roses, and then light pink roses, and then white roses. It's sort of a fading out effect. That's called saturation, Frank."

I considered it before replying. "Yeah, that actually sounds really good. I don't have any better ideas. Could you do that for us?" I asked the lady at the counter.

"I could certainly make it happen," she replied with a smile on her face. "Let's see, do you want a dozen of them? If so, I can put four of each color into the bundle."

"That sounds good," I replied. "I don't want them today though. Can I pick some up next week?"

"Sure. I'll make sure to spare a few roses for you. Have a nice day, sir!"

With that, we walked out of the flower shop and headed back to the campus. "Hey, do you wanna grab lunch with me and Gee today?" I asked Lindsey.

"I would love that of course, but I don't want to invade your guys' time."

"No no, you won't be doing that at all!" I reassured. "After all, I have to thank you for helping me with all this somehow. Come with us, it'll be fun. Please?" I made playful puppy dog eyes at her.

She sighed before responding. "Okay fine. I'll go with you guys. Want me to call Gee?"

"Sure, that would be great."

She pulled out her phone, dialing Gerard's number and putting it on speaker. "Hello?" Gerard asked through the phone.

"Hey Gee, do you mind meeting me and Frank for lunch?"

"I don't mind," he responded. "What restaurant are we going to?"

Lindsey looked over at me, expecting me to answer. "I'm fine with whatever you guys want to get. Preferably something on campus though."

"I'm thinking Subway," Lindsey responded. "I really want a sandwich right now for some reason."

"That's fine with me. Gee?"

"Yeah I'm cool with that. I'll meet you guys over there in a few minutes."

"Okay, bye Gee." Lindsey hung up the phone. "Do you need a place to put the ring? I live in a room alone. I could keep it in my place until you're ready to present it, that way Gee doesn't accidentally stumble across it."

"That would be fantastic. Could we run over to your room to drop it off real quick?"

"Yeah just text Gee so he doesn't get worried."

I nodded before pulling out my phone and sending him a quick text. Hey Gee, we're going to run by Lindsey's place real quick. She forgot her wallet so she's gonna go get it.

I put my phone back as we approached the girls dorm. "Here," I said while handing Lindsey the ring. She nodded before walking inside.

I stood outside patiently, waiting for her to return from the building. When she did, we began walking towards the Subway.

Gerard was already there, waiting outside for us. He smiled when we approached the building. "Hey guys."

"Hey, Gee," me and Lindsey both said. We laughed at the fact that we practically recited that line, and soon walked inside.

Just one more week, I thought to myself. One more week until you make the most important decision of your life.
