1. Starry Skies and Coffee Breaks
Author's Note: Hi! There's only a few things you need to know before you start reading this. The ages in this story are altered slightly from real life, because it's more convenient for me that way. Also, I don't have a specific publishing schedule. I definitely plan on publishing frequently, but it may not be every day. It really all depends on if I'm in a writing mood or not. However, if you notice that I haven't updated recently, CALL ME OUT! Message me or something! Sometimes I'll get tied up in things and forget! Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy. I have pretty much the whole plot planned out for it. (And don't worry, no characters are going to die. I don't plan on breaking anyone's heart with this fic.) Anyway yeah thanks! -GetMikeyHisToast2020
Gerard found himself staring up at the color-changing sky.
His timing for today was almost perfect. He was usually able to predict when the sunset would appear, but today was different. Today he knew exactly when it would happen. It was a very rare occasion, but he always appreciated the opportunity when it arrived.
Ironically, no other art majors appreciated the sunsets nearly as much as Gerard did. He found himself to be alone yet again, and he also found himself recognizing how lonely he was yet again.
The topic didn't bother Gerard too much. He had his mind, and that was enough for him. With a brain, you could entertain yourself for hours at a time. Gerard could watch paint dry if he needed to. He managed to keep himself occupied by having conversations with the objects around him. Even though objects wouldn't respond, it was a great way to release all your thoughts.
People, however, were different. If you talked to people, they reacted. They would pass judgement, show expression, disagree or agree, ask you more, completely ignore you, or change the topic altogether.
Gerard didn't like that about people. He didn't like how people could so easily take away your words and do something with them. They snatched them from your mouth, and altered them for their own benefit.
If Gerard talked to nothing, then his words would be left alone. They would be able to float around freely, dwelling on the Earth for as long as they wanted. They weren't for the enjoyment of others, they were only for Gerard.
Gerard found himself expressing these types of thoughts in the embrace of nature.
Observing the beautiful sky above him was one of the most rewarding experiences. Shades of yellow, orange, red, pink, magenta, lilac, periwinkle, and navy all blended into each other. It reminded him of a chameleon or an octopus, seeing that the transitions were actually quite similar. The color slowly faded down to the horizon, until the whole sky was filled with a dark shade of navy blue. As the Sun completely disappeared, it was replaced with a new form of beauty. Billions of other stars appeared in the sky.
If there was one thing that Gerard appreciated the most about nature, it was color.
It was fascinating. In art terms, mixing every color together creates black. This can be proved by mixing all colors on a paint pallet. However, in science terms, mixing every color together created white. This can also be proved, because dividing white light on a prism makes an even rainbow.
It was fun to think about these types of things, especially for Gerard.
"I look forward to when Fall finally comes around and your leaves change," Gerard spoke out loud towards the tree he was leaning against. "We get to see green leaves all the time, but in Fall we witness all kinds of leaves. It's very counterintuitive. In such a cool part of the year, we see some of the warmest colors in nature."
Continuing to look up at the sky, Gerard thought about all the marvelous things that he enjoyed about the nature around him.
"Shouldn't you be in your dorm right now? It's dark," a familiar voice spoke from behind him.
He turned around and saw that the source of the voice was none other than his best friend Lindsey. Once again, he doesn't usually enjoy talking to people, but Lindsey was nice. She listened to everything he had to say and she agreed with him most of the time. She never used his words for her own good, but she rather cherished them.
"Shouldn't you be in yours?" He managed to turn the question over to her.
"I was in my dorm, that is until I looked out the window and saw my best friend sitting alone in the court yard at dark. So what are you here for?" She took a seat beside him, leaning against the same tree he was using.
"I was enjoying the sunset."
"The sunset happened a half hour ago, Gerard. What are you doing right now?"
"Right now I suppose I am enjoying the stars."
"Can't you do that from your room, Gee? You have a window, you know."
"It's not the same," he sighed. "It's not just the sight that amuses me, it's the feeling. You can look at pictures of sunsets all the time, but they aren't the same as witnessing it for yourself. It's so much better when you are there for the experience. It's so much better with the itchiness of the grass, the sound of crickets coming out at night, the slow gust of wind blowing by, and just the idea of nature in general."
Lindsey nodded. "I understand." They sat in silence for a few moments before Gerard finally decided to lift himself off the ground and head back to his dorm.
"I'm going to head back to my dorm, Linds. Do you want to stop for coffee on the way back?"
"At this time at night, Gee?" She raised her eyebrow in a half-concerned, half-amused manner.
"Oh come on. You don't have to get anything, but I'm craving a cup of warm coffee right now. Come with me, please?"
"Hmm let me think." She stayed still for another 30 seconds before Gerard became impatient.
"Lindsey, you're going to have to think quickly, because the café closes in 15 minutes." She rolled her eyes jokingly but soon stood up and began walking with Gerard.
They arrived at the small shop building and Gerard opened the door, holding it so Lindsey could walk in before. "Oh, such a gentleman," she commented sarcastically causing Gerard to chuckle.
They waited at the counter until a barista came out of the kitchen and offered to serve them. "Yes, I'll have a tall latte with a double shot of espresso please." The barista nodded and began making the drink while Gerard got out his wallet and fished out the money he needed.
"Thank you," Gerard said when the barista handed him the drink in exchange for his money. Him and Lindsey walked back out of the café and down the sidewalk, all while Gerard cautiously sipped his coffee.
They finally reached Lindsey's dorm building, and began to say their goodbyes.
Gerard reached out one arm to hug Lindsey, and she gratefully accepted it. "Bye Lindsey, I'll see you tomorrow." They let go of each other and stepped back.
"Goodnight, Gee. Make sure not to stay up too late, okay?"
"Yeah yeah, whatever, no promises." Gerard laughed at her unamused expression. "I'm just kidding Lindsey, I'll try okay? Goodnight." And with that he began walking back to his own dorm.
Walking up the stairs wasn't the greatest, but Gerard had no choice. He wished they would put an elevator in the dorms or something, just so he wouldn't have to climb up all these fucking stairs.
When he got to the final flight, he stumbled as he reached the top and began tumbling towards the wall. Unfortunately, there wasn't a wall, there was a door, and he fell right into the supply closet. He took a few moments to steady himself before looking down at the ground below him. He noticed one thing.
A note.
He picked it up and sat himself down on the ground, carefully unfolding it. At first glance, it looked really messy. Whoever wrote this was definitely in a rush. The words were scribbled down with a green pen, and the ink was freshly smudged. This note was fairly new.
The note definitely wasn't the neatest, but it wasn't unreadable. Gerard was able to decipher most of what the note said.
Dear ADAM,
Though the days have passed by,
And quickly they've gone,
It seems like you haven't been missed for long.
The times aren't the same,
They've definitely changed,
But change is for the better, as you would say.
I can't forget the moments
When we cherished everything.
Nothing went to waste
And we kept on singing.
Although your voice has slowly died out,
That's okay because mine's here to stay.
~Frank Iero
This definitely confused Gerard, but it wasn't a bad confused. It was mostly curiosity.
Firstly, the person who wrote this note, Frank presumably, had such a poetic way to write letters. While there wasn't a steady rhyme scheme, it still flowed naturally. It was easy to recite and even artistic in the way it was written.
Secondly, there were many ways you could interpret the person on the receiving end of the letter, Adam. Perhaps he was an old friend that Frank had? Perhaps they had grown apart somehow? Everything in the letter was referring to the past rather than the present. Gerard could only assume that this Adam person was no longer in Frank's life for reasons unknown.
Lastly, why the fuck was a letter like this abandoned in a supply closet?
Gerard wasn't going to dwell on the last thought for too long, knowing that he would never get anywhere with it. Somehow though, he was going to figure out everything about this letter. He wasn't sure how, but he would.
He would find out what the note was about.
He would find out who Frank was.
However, he would have to find this all out tomorrow, because Gerard was not going to keep his lazy ass up investigating some random piece of paper he found in his dorm building.
He placed the paper in the pocket of his jacket, closing the door behind him as he left the closet. He walked down the hallway until he eventually reached his room. Grabbing his keys, he unlocked the door and walked inside, closing it when he was in.
Gerard had a room all to himself. He never particularly asked for that, but he definitely appreciated it. With his own room, he was able to decorate it however he liked, and no one would be able to judge him for it.
Most of the room was black and white. The bedsheets were white, the wall was black, the floor was white, the curtains were black, the desk was white, and the chair was black. He liked this simple yet complex color scheme. There were hardly any colors, yet all the colors were there at once, because if you remember, you get black and white by mixing all the colors.
Gerard always wore black as well. Currently, he was wearing black skinny jeans, a black tee shirt, a black leather jacket, and he even dyed his hair black before he went to college. He liked it that way.
Gerard walked over to the window and closed the curtains. He turned a small lamp on next to the desk, and took out the note from his pocket. Pulling out one of the desk drawers, he placed it in the compartment, and closed it once again.
He grabbed some pajamas from his closet and pulled them on, tossing his other clothes on the ground for now. Gerard wasn't a particularly messy person, he was just an extremely lazy person.
Just as he was about to sit down at his desk, he got a knock on the door.
He looked through the peep hole and saw a familiar face standing outside. He unlocked the door and opened it, sighing. "What is it now, Ray?"
"Gee, you'll never believe what just happened!"
Gerard rolled his eyes, slightly annoyed that his peace was once again ruined. "Yeah yeah, just get on with what you have to say. I'm kind of busy right now."
"Okay, so listen to this!" Ray was becoming very excited now. "Well basically, me and the guys went up on the roof to have a marshmallow fight. You know, a bunch of shirtless dudes throwing marshmallows at each other." Gerard chucked at the absurdity of this image, but soon nodded for Ray to continue. "So we were having a fight, but then we looked over the edge of the roof and saw the head of the school walking by, and of course, opportunity struck. We grabbed a whole jar of marshmallow cream and poured it on his head, and when the whole thing was dumped on him, we ran back inside to our dorms. Everyone opened their windows and saw him cursing and stomping and dude, it was hilarious. Even the girls dorm across the courtyard was laughing at it. Every single window was opened and they were all so amused."
"That sounds awesome Ray. Did he even realize it was marshmallow when it hit him?"
"Dude I don't even know, I think he was scared of what it was for awhile. I'm pretty sure he thought it was bird poop for a solid minute, but he's old and confused so there's no telling." Gerard laughed at that.
Soon a few more guys came by to retrieve Ray. "Yo, Ray, the head is going to come by the boys dorms and check for suspicious activity soon. Can you come help us clean all the marshmallows off of the roof?" Ray groaned but soon obliged.
"Bye Gerard. Oh there's a party down the hall tomorrow night since it's Friday, wanna come? I know you're not one for parties, but please? It'll be fun!"
Gerard thought for a moment. He didn't like parties, actually, he hated them, but maybe this was a good thing for once. If he went to the party, he could perhaps find someone who knew Frank. He decided to go anyway, but he wasn't going to have to much fun there. He was just going there to find a person, and then he would leave. "Sure. I'll stop by, but I may not stay for long."
"Thanks Gee, have a good night, okay?"
"Okay yeah, goodbye Ray." Gerard waved him off and soon closed the door. He sat down at his desk for awhile and soon decided to draw.
He got out many different colors of pencils and began illustrating the sunset he had witnessed a few hours ago. He blended the colors into one another, surrounding a large, spherical, yellow sun. Once he finished the background, he drew silhouettes of the ground and the trees and the distant hills, all being shadowed by the sun. He finally decided that the drawing was complete, and he put his supplies away.
By the time he was done, it was close to midnight, so he turned his lamp off and got into bed. Closing his eyes, he eventually drifted off to sleep.
