Day 17 - Favorite Quote
There have been way too many quotes throughout my reading life that have inspired me to be added to this chapter, but there might be one that stuck out for my professional career.
When I applied to law school, I wanted to change the world. For some, I had married the wrong race and had a few brushes with discrimination, I hated gender inequality and my best friend was gay. Like a bulldozer, I waltzed ahead, trying to make a difference.
Then I woke up. I realized while lawyers might be able to influence those things, ultimately, all we can do is find justice. But what is really meant by that little word which forms the foundation of all the legal systems in the world?
For those who don't know, 'A Time To Kill' is a book about self-justice - the quest of a father to avenge the rape of his young daughter. He chooses to impose the death penalty on the culprits and in the end, he goes free. A big victory for his defense lawyer - yet it remains a question whether it was actually justice.
Self-justice is a recurring theme in my own books since I am still seeking the answer to this question. Should judges uphold the letter of the law even if a criminal goes free or should he impose his own set of justice? Should lawyers try to get off criminals they know are guilty? Where do we draw the line?
Maybe one day I wake up and I'll finally see the truth. In the meantime, all I can do is try - and hopefully write some memorable quotes of my own.
