RookWri78 - The Creator of the Butterfly Collective

With such a title, we can only ponder what chapter 16 has in reserve for us.

Maybe we will have some answers in the question we asked the author, Ruki (a.k.a RookWri78).

Dear Ruki
We are glad to have you on board for this SciFi Relay adventure.
And we want to thank you for spending this moment with us for this interview.

Tell us a bit about yourself, your journey as a writer and your foray into the Orange part of the web (a.k.a. Wattpad)

I'm a total novice in writing, hence the username RookWri78 and the name Rook (erstwhile Rookie). I joined Wattpad, thanks to a very close friend of mine (onestraykid), to protect a story I was working on. Yep, I was lured in because of the 'All rights reserved' feature. I liked the sense of safety Wattpad provides for writers and how anyone can join the platform. Also, I really don't know what I could've done without Wattpad...it saved my life in a sense.

And as a writer...I've come a long way. I'm still learning about the million punctuation and syntax rules (which is embarrassing since English is my first language), but I'm happy that I've written six stories in my one and a half years of writing.

1, 2, 3... Tell us about ONE story you would have wanted to write, TWO authors you admire, who inspire you.... THREE characters who often come into your mind when you start a new story...

Oo, a retelling of an Asian folklore...there's a plethora of them.

Um, two authors...it's difficult to choose. I admire Dan Brown and Stephen King, but I'm awestruck by the ones on Wattpad, especially SuVida777 . She and onestraykid inspire me to create my own stories.

And three characters that often come to my mind...oof, that's difficult. Sometimes it's my friends and family, or characters from all the K-Dramas I've watched so far; others include a mix of the two. I can't predict who makes an appearance every time, and that's what makes story-writing fun for me.

What made you want to participate in the relay?

The brainstorming sessions, the editing crunches and honestly, the outreach we all get as writers. But most of all, I wanted to learn more about Sci-fi and the writers of that genre. I've watched sci-fi movies and shows, but writing Sci-fi is a completely different world. By participating in the relay, I'm glad to be working with such cool creators.

How did you find the experience?

Initially, I was alien to the concepts discussed (both Relay-related and random). But jinnis and the others made me feel at home, especially at the time of creating the plot and characters.

What challenged you the most in this venture? Something that maybe brought you out of your writer's comfort zone?

Oo, tough question. Frankly, it was the writing itself. What if my chapter isn't good enough? What if it brings down the entire book? That self-doubt crippled me till the last few weeks of writing. I've faced this earlier as well, leading to my first discontinued story. But man, the strong will and the energy of the whole group...not only did it help me finish the chapter for the Relay, but also encourage me to work on my abandoned story.

Something we are most curious about... How about you give us a little teaser of your part in this story? A sentence or two that will keep us on our toes and impatiently wait reading your chapter?

I'm not going to spill anything here. Where is the fun in giving a little teaser? ;)

And while we are feeling the tease, as we consider the Science Fiction genre, we are all expecting wondrous worlds and weird alien species... Can you tell us about one element you brought to the Relay, one element you created for this story? It may be an alien race, a location in space, or maybe a special technology... Tell us about this special character, object, environment or settings you built up for your part in the story. What was your inspiration for it?

The species featured in my story lives in a planet much similar to Earth, but the said planet's water to land ratio is reversed. They are the Okkuttai: a butterfly species that congregate into Humans upon the arrival of newcomers. I wanted to incorporate some Asian elements (the species, Idea Malabarica, is found in peninsular India & the term Okkutta actually means 'union' in Kannada) and get over my strange dislike of butterflies, so here's the Okkutta. Hope you like them...they're not too bad once you get to know them.

And just to make it even more understandable. This little part of yourself you added to make the story even greater, can you give us a definition as if it was an entry in The Great Dictionary of Science Fiction?

Okkutta (n. pl. Okkuttai) : A congregation of 836 Idea malabarica (or Malabar tree nymph), mostly white butterflies with black markings, that make up an adult human (with a slightly larger head) whenever a "stranger" is amidst them.

Now, we have some idea about the Butterfly Collective. One way to know more, however, is to read Chapter 16.
Enjoy!
