Meet the Authors: Søvn Drake
Writer's Relay:
Dear Søvn, we are super excited to have you participating in this unique collaboration with your fellow writers. Let's take this opportunity to know more about you, your writing journey, and your thoughts on Wattpad and the Writer's Relay event.
So, let's start with some warm up...
What prompted you to start writing on Wattpad, and what do you like most about the platform?
Søvn:
I started writing at the end of 2018 after a 20-year hiatus. I was motivated to write my son and his friends into some Harry Potter fan fiction. I soon tired of this activity and joined @The_Weekend_Write-In, a weekly flash fiction writing group open to all writers. I enjoy meeting other writers and sharing feedback on Wattpad.
WR:
Tell us one thing about your writing process that has helped you the most.
Søvn:
I really have to put a first draft down for at least half a day before going back and finding all the typos and awkward sentences. Deadlines and collaboration also help get things done.
WR:
Which author has influenced your writing the most?
Søvn:
Hemingway. I'm brief when it comes to words.
WR:
Where, would you say, do you stand in your writing journey?
Søvn:
Really I'm still at the start. I work full-time in an unrelated field and can't dedicate as much time as I would like to it.
WR:
Which of your own stories is closest to your heart?
Søvn:
I start a new collection of flash fiction every twenty-five stories. Here is the one I most recently finished: Supratentorial Dust Storms and Tumbleweeds
Several of my weekly flash-fiction pieces have been snippets of family history. They are really historical fiction and I consider them first drafts of a longer family biography I hope to write one day. Of the collection above, Voyage on the Bremen and The Twins are family tales.
WR:
Share two Wattpad story recommendations. Include the usernames of the authors and why you enjoyed the stories.
Søvn:
Since I'm johnnedwill 's stan (stalker fan) I'll recommend: Adventure in Acre and The Cross of Damascus
They are part of a fun adventure series (three in total).
WR:
There is one question that many authors may have asked themselves, you included... But could there be one simple single answer? Let's hear from your thoughts...
What would be the perfect recipe for the next greatest novel of all time? One you would write or read
Søvn:
Romance, adventure, mystery, and maybe a spaceship.
WR:
Now that we know more about you, we are curious about your involvement in the Writer's Relay adventure.
What was your first thought when seeing the Writer's Relay call for participants? Did you apply straight away or did you take time to ponder on your possible involvement?
Søvn:
I might meet some cool new people and get out of my normal routine. I applied straight away.
WR:
What do you hope to gain from collaborating with other writers on this Writers Relay initiative?
Søvn:
New friends and new insights into ways I could improve my writing.
WR:
Now that you are well into this relay race, what do you think of your role in the collaboration?
Writing as a group is a bit like musicians performing in an orchestra. What is your instrument in this philharmonic? And what kind of symphony will come out?
Søvn:
Um, I'm not very musical. You can give me the triangle and I'll try not to screw it up, but no promises. I would like to beat very big drums though if I'm allowed to touch them at all.
