True Form - Round 6 Purple Belt

Panting heavily, Dana shoved through the foliage to escape the group of hideous creatures that were chasing her. With branches snapping underfoot and twigs cracking as she shoved them out of the way, it was hard for her to stay as silent as she had hoped. For a reason unknown to her, these men and women were after her and by the look of determination on their faces, they wanted her dead.

"Oh dear God!" She muttered to herself as she glanced behind her, noting that a couple of these people were gaining on her, seemingly far more athletic than she could ever hope to be. Dana let out a small exhausted sob as she ran, her legs numb under her as she continued to escape the group with fear for her life. What had she done to deserve this? She was a good upstanding citizen who didn't even scam the pick and mix scales in the supermarket. She'd never even stolen so much as a pen from work, yet these four people were chasing her with fire in their eyes. Her heart pounded heavily, sweat dripping from her brow as she pushed herself further, knowing that every second counted in these moments. It wasn't long before she glanced back again, watching these people's faces twist hideously into their true demonic form. Their smiles were enough to make her stomach turn and no sooner had she thought about it, she heaved and tried to shake what she'd just seen from her mind. Demons were after her... but why? What had she done?

As her mind wandered, her concentration faltered and she didn't lift her leg up high enough. Her toes caught on a large fallen log and she tripped, rolling and tumbling as the floor suddenly seemed to dip downhill. For a moment, everything was fine - quiet and peaceful, no fear pulling at her gut as she fell freely, rolling through nature and away from the evil. She stopped suddenly as the ground levelled and wasted no time in jumping to her feet, her head still spinning as she stumbled along, using the trees to push her forwards and give her a small boost.

"Dana?" A male voice called, echoing off the barks of the many old trees that surrounded her. Dana stopped suddenly, spinning round to try and find the person who was looking for her. "Are you here?"

"Help me! People are chasing me!" She screamed out into the woodland. The snap of a branch caught her attention but before she had a chance to escape, one of the demons grabbed her, letting out an evil laugh as they celebrated finally catching up to her. Dana sucked in a sharp breath as one of them came into vision - their seemingly normal human face disappearing as she saw their true form. The black eyes, evil grins, some of them horned... these were truly the creation of the devil himself. No one else would see these as beautiful.

"Oh what a treat to have on a Friday." One demon spoke happily, as if he'd proudly hunted something for dinner that night. Dana's stomach twisted in fear and anxiety as she desperately tried to work out a way to escape these four creatures.

"The reward for her was great. It'll be worth all the hard work." Another added, rubbing her fingers together on her thumbs to signify their pay. Dana barely breathed as they spoke, seemingly so happy about capturing this very boring lady. Fear had rooted her to the floor as she was circled by the hungry demons.

"Any last words?" A third demon added. As Dana looked over, this demon became engulfed in flames, showing his true power amongst the others. As everyone fell silent, stunned by this display, the demon flicked fire from him and covered the other demons, all of whom screamed as they burnt and disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Dana let out a shaky breath, barely able to keep herself standing, as the powerful demon appeared in front of her within a blink, a long bony finger stroking her delicate cheek. "The reward was too great to share." He answered her questions before she had a chance to ask it. She shakily nodded in agreement, completely clueless as to what he was referring to.

"W-why me?" Dana managed to squeak out, nerves constricting her vocal chords and making her sound like a mouse in the clutches of a lion. The demon hesitated for a second, working out if she was messing with him, before offering her a sad look.

"Oh..." he said in a demeaning tone. "It's a shame, isn't it? You're going to die before you really know who you are..." The bony finger that had remained on her cheek finally moved away and with a small twitch of it, the demon sent her flying a few feet away where she skidded to a halt against a tree, letting out a guttural sound as she landed. Dana debated with herself whether it was better to play dead or to try and run, but before she had a chance to do either, the demon was upon her once again with his hand wrapped around her neck. With ease, as if lifting a bag of crisps, he pulled her up and held her a few feet above the ground. Dana scratched and clawed at the hand, desperate to free herself as she felt the air escape her.

"Enough!" Another voice suddenly said as a person appeared seemingly out of thin air, grabbing the demon and throwing him away from Dana, who fell like a sack of potatoes. She watched in awe as the man who saved her showed his wings, his white eyes glowing as he laid a hand on the demon and smote it. Dana's mouth dropped open as she froze where she sat, unsure as to what was going on in life anymore. Had she had a mental breakdown? Was this what a midlife crisis felt like? "Dana, you need to come with me now." The angel held his hand out, eyes darting around the forest as he checked for more demons. "I can sense more coming, we need to get you safe."

"Thank you." Dana barely hesitated as she grabbed his hand and ran alongside him out of the forest and into a nearby town, heading into an abandoned warehouse to catch her breath.

"We should be okay in here for now ." The angel said affirmatively.

"What the hell is going on?" Dana finally exclaimed, taking a few steps back from the angel as his eyes gleamed again.

"It's a lot to explain." He shrugged, seemingly unbothered about her breakdown. She ran her hands through her hair as she looked the man up and down.

"Meaning?" She snapped before looking guiltily over to him. "Look I'm sorry, but I have no clue what's going on. Before today, I didn't know there were such things as angels and demons yet somehow I'm seeing you now."

"You see my true form?" The angel questioned, his brows furrowing as he took a long hard look at the fragile female before him. She nodded. "Interesting." He added before turning his back on her again. Dana let out a sob as fury filled her. What was wrong with everyone? Did no one owe her an explanation?

"You're an angel! Tell me! Is that not your duty? Aren't you meant to care for humans?" Dana's emotions were so conflicted she became angry, shouting at the angel who had just saved her life. She felt guilty but she knew she deserved answers.

"I am." The angel said quickly, appearing behind her within a millisecond. "But you're not a human." He whispered into her ear as he jabbed a long sharp blade into her. Dana let out a throaty grunt as she collapsed to the floor, holding her wound as she glanced up to the angel in confusion. "You're a Nephilim, half angel half human. I owe you nothing."

"So you tricked me? Made me believe I was safe with you when you wanted to kill me?" Dana's eyes welled with tears as she stared up at the angel.

"I'm sorry..." Finally the angel spoke with some feeling. "It's nothing personal. I was just following orders." As the angel turned away, Dana quickly stood, the wound healing by itself as she let out a hearty laugh. The angel turned round swiftly, eyes widening as he realised what was happening.

"Me too. Sorry." Dana grinned, snapping her fingers and causing the angel to disintegrate in front of her. She shook her head. "Amateurs, believing a Nephilim wouldn't know their true identity and power... Fools." She grabbed a pen and paper from her pocket and scribbled another name from the list. "Huh, only four left. Shame, I was beginning to enjoy acting like a human." She pocketed them quickly as she headed back out, ready to kill more angels and demons.
