Taking on the Deadline
Taking on the Deadline
We all write under pressure, whether it's self-imposed or someone has challenged us to get it done. Deadlines are synonymous, dare we say, essential to writing. And since we cannot control time...yet, we are destined to tackle most projects under the proverbial gun.
Here are a few tips to incorporate into your writing life when things gets tough. So buckle-up Buttercup, we're going in!
Break it down:
When a date on the calendar is staring at you, it's easy to get overwhelmed by every task you need to accomplish. We suggest breaking down your writing into manageable parts. You might color code them according to importance. If that's too much work, simply split those tasks down the middle. Setting realistic goals will have you reaching them faster. Lists are your friends.
Tackle the worst first:
Is there a gaping hole in your plot? Do you struggle with dead verbs in your writing? Sometimes when you focus on the hard stuff first, attack the things that push your boundaries, this will make the rest of the tasks easy by comparison.
Do some multitasking:
When time is your most valuable asset, you need to be resourceful. Take advantage of every opportunity to finish a chapter or restructure a scene. Wake up early. Stay up late. Edit on the subway if you have to. Short term focus can reap great rewards. Just don't ignore your body.
Know when to say "No":
Remind yourself who's the boss of you. You can say 'no' to organizing your kayak club's next excursion or taking the new exec out to lunch. The world will continue to spin without your attention to it. Right now, it's all about you reaching a goal.
Do not be distracted:
Your friends on social media will go on with their lives while you do your thing, so check urgent emails only. And definitely no videos of puppies or baby goats. The time you schedule for writing is sacred beyond all else for this time period.
Take breaks:
This may seem counterintuitive to some and obvious to others, but taking mental and physical breaks keeps the mind and body cooperating. Indulge in a twenty minute nap. Stretch. Pet the cat. Healthy snacks are your friends. If that includes coffee, we won't judge.
Don't worry, be happy:
Sometimes our goals lead us past our boundaries and anxiety can creep in. If your mental health wins out over a deadline, you can always pull back and regroup. Not to beat a point to a pulp, but the world will continue to spin if you miss a deadline, and new opportunities are literally everywhere.
Now, take a deep breath and start writing. You have a deadline to meet!
