Chapter Five

Our proposal wasn't first. Nor second. Nor third. Apparently, the Blackwood men wanted to sink in the fact that they loved their drama. And what possibly is more dramatic than some much-needed suspense? "Beta," Jonas says. "Please read the next proposal."

"Yes, Preeminence." Ever since France, that title has brought a small smile to Colton's mouth. "A bill introducing sentences to those convicted of sexual assault." Jonas's eyes scan over his cousins. Some of them shift in their seats. And by some, I mainly mean Eli. Z's eyes flick to me. I don't look away, instead, letting my eyes narrow at him. Colton continues to read the details, ones that have been checked over and critiqued by Gwen. I swear the Tresias still hates me, but I got back to my room this morning with a bottle of champagne, instead of a ruined dress, so at least we're making progress.

"Thank you, Beta. I don't suppose this needs to be discussed." Jonas's voice goes harsh, daring his cousins to argue. They don't. "Let's vote. All opposed to this bill, say nay." Eli's mouth twitches. I don't know whether it was personal choice or the harsh glares from the three siblings that stopped him. Z sighs, but doesn't answer. No one answers. The bill is unopposed. I squeeze Vienna's hand. Jonas nods. "All in favor, say yay."

"Yay," twelve Blackwoods utter, some with more emotion than others. I let out a deep breath. It passed. We did it. It passed. Jonas smiles, the sound of wood hitting his black throne echoing throughout the Chamber.
