Boundaries [Chapter 17]

I grabbed the dagger at my hip and gripped it in my hand as best as I could; my wounds were still fresh and I knew I would tear a stitch if I tried to defend myself using my right hand. But I was too clumsy to use my left; if it were a grounder, I would be dead within a second. But then it occurred to me that a grounder would have taken me out from a distance. Unless… Unless they wanted one of us as hostage to learn about us.

I turned quickly towards the direction of the sound, and spotted Finn and Clarke up ahead, trekking through the forest quickly. They hadn’t spotted me, but I was glad to have seen them. They looked as though they knew where they were going, and that was enough for me.

                “Clarke!” I called, “Finn!”

It was light enough now that they could see me; the sun glimmering through the tall trees. Clarke turned to spotted me, followed shortly by Finn. I rushed towards them, wondering if they were out looking for the drop ship as well.

“What are you doing out here alone?” Finn asked.

“I was following Bellamy, but lost him.” I shrugged my shoulders.

“We have to get there before him.” Clarke explained.

“Well it’s probably too late.” I broke the news.

“I know.” Clarke sighed. “We still need to get there though.”

I nodded, following the duo and watching them thoughtfully. People watching was something I adored; it gave you so much insight on people that you didn’t even know, although it could also cause false presumptions. I kept behind Clarke and Finn, feeling a different emotion between them. Last time I had seen Finn he had been devastated about the wrist bands being cut off, and now he seemed chipper, happy even. Clarke too.

Smiling, and coming to conclusions that I couldn’t prove, I crossed my arms over my chest and began to think about what Bellamy would want with the drop ship. Though I had no idea what or who was on it, he seemed too keen on getting there before anyone else had even thought of checking it out. Of course there was the possibility of grounders getting there first, and that made me even more worried for Bellamy being there on his own.

However, the grounders were very primitive in the aspect that they had probably never seen a drop ship or anything of the likes, and would possibly avoid it. Perhaps they thought it was reinforcement, which was what I was hoping. After seeing what they had done to Jasper, they could kill us if they wanted to, and we could do nothing much about it.

“There!” Clarke shouted, pointing to the small pod.

                “That’s hardly a drop ship…” I muttered.

“We are thinking supplies, but it looks small even for that…” Clarke said as she rushed to open the ship.

“There is someone in here.” Clarke said.

I glanced around, making sure that there was no one else around, and also looking for signs that Bellamy had even made it to the ship. As Clarke helped the girl out of the pod, I walked over to Finn, “Bellamy had to have gotten here… He was way ahead of us.”

“Or he could have gotten lost.” Finn said, “Didn’t you lose him?”

“Yeah, but I’m directionally challenged.” I scoffed, defending Bellamy.

“Why do you want to rat him out anyways?” Finn asked.

“There is nothing to rat out.” I lied, “I just want him safe…”

“Finn?” The girl who had arrived in the drop ship exclaimed.

“Raven?!” Finn turned towards the girl, rushing towards her as he embraced her.

It was a reunion of lovers, but I felt that there was a kink in the situation. The look on Clarke’s face revealed it all. I lowered my eyes, feeling for her as I knew Bellamy had been with other women since me. However, I had known that Bellamy wasn’t going to be faithful, because we were not in a relationship, at least not a solid one. Finn… Well Finn seemed like the type of guy you wanted to keep for yourself.

When I saw the look in Clarke’s eyes, her gaze casted downwards as she held her arm awkwardly, as if trying to hold everything in, I realized that I was going to end up like that if I didn’t set some sort of boundary with Bellamy. I didn’t expect him to settle down with me, but if he was planning to get any action from me again, he would have to stop sleeping with the other women in the camp. It wasn’t fair to me.

“The radio… It’s gone.” Raven declared, a tone of defeat. “It must’ve gotten lost in the fall…”

“No.” I said, “That’s what Bellamy was after.”

“We have to find him.” Clarke said, “Ava, let’s go.”

I was surprised with how forward Clarke had been with me, asking me to come with her to go after Bellamy. When everyone stared at her for a moment, feeling a bit awkward, she spoke up again, “Ava knows him well…”

It was enough for Raven to believe that there was nothing wrong; she was too ecstatic to see Finn to really notice that there was anything uncomfortable. Clarke and I were a few yards ahead of Finn and Raven, giving them some time to catch up on the time that they had been apart. I wasn’t so sure Raven would get all the details, however.

“Are you okay?” I asked her.

                “Fine.” She replied.

I wasn’t good with consoling people, so I dropped it there. There was nothing I could say to her to change things, but I was curious to know what had happened. “You and Finn…?”

“Yeah.” She replied, confirming that they had indeed slept together.

“Know about her?” I asked, in regards to Raven.

                “Nope.”

I bowed my head, looking at the ground before my feet. Neither Clarke nor I had anything else to say. I had gotten the information I wanted, and I couldn’t press her for anymore without making the already tough situation harder on her. Instead, we walked silently through the forest, looking for Bellamy. We presumed that he had headed back in the direction of the camp, hoping we could catch up to him before he got there.

And he appeared almost right before our eyes, heading towards us.

Super duper sorry for the long delay! I meant to post a chapter on Saturday before I left, but I didn't find the time. And I was serviceless for four days, and I'm itching to read. But I have to admit I am extremely happy with the feedback I got while I was gone! Thanks everyone!
