Wounded

Leone Abbacchio walked through the streets of Naples in the direction of his small apartment. A shopping bag filled with vegetables, water bottles, soap and other stuff to keep himself clean and healthy.

He hummed quietly and looked around himself. That day the weather wasn't too good. It had rained for most of the day and even though it had stopped raining earlier, the sky was still colored dark gray.

He sometimes stopped and waved shortly if he recognized someone and after that continued walking down the  road.

Until he saw a trail of red spots on the sidewalk.

It wasn't that unusual, especially in a big city. He might have continued if he was younger and not think anything of it, but since his internship he started some days ago he looked more suspicious at things like that.

He first looked around himself if he saw anything else and then decided to follow the trail of red spots that looked like blood.

He followed the trail and it let to an alleyway. He stopped and looked if there wasn't anything dangerous and if it wasn't a trap. But then he heard a quiet grunt. It sounded like something was in pain and hiding behind the dumpster.

He walked to where the noise came from and startled when he saw someone laying there.

A teenager probably around his age was laying there on his back. His clothes were torn and covered with blood stains. Both of his arms were covered in blood and scars. And there was a fresh wound on his right arm.
His nose was bleeding and maybe even broken and there were also blood all over his face and neck.
He had bags underneath his eyes and was staring right at Leone.

"Go...away" he grunted. "I already said I have nothing to do with it...".
He looked quite tired and his voice sounded hoarse.

Leone crouched next to him. "Who hurt you and who are you?"

"Why would I tell that to you... I don't even know who you are." He answered angrily.

Leone sighted. "I'm Leone Abbacchio. I only want to help you."

"Are you a stand user?" He then asked. He punched the wall next to him. "Can you see Sticky Fingers?"

Leone looked confused at him. "A what user? Sticky Fingers?"

He inspected him for a second. "Give me your hand."

Leone did exactly what he told him he had to do.

He took his hand and licked it.

"What the fuck?! Why did you lick my hand?!"

He ignored the questions. "Hmm you're not lying... My name is Bruno Bucciarati, some men hurt me because they thought I knew something they want to know. But I don't know anything and I don't know who exactly they are."

"But why-" he then sighted. "You know what, forget about that. You need to go to the hospital."

"I can't... they will find me..." Bruno said.

"Hmmm okay. Then I'll bring you to my apartment. You look tired and quite disgusting."

"Thank you." He said sarcastically. "How nice of you to say that."

"No hate. Can you stand up?"

"I don't know, can I?"

"Don't be a bitch and just stand up. If it hurts I will help you."

"I'm not a bitch" Bruno mumbled and he stood up. He staggered a bit and then fell against Leone.

Leone caught him on time luckily. "I guess I have to give you a piggyback ride. I will give you my jacket so that people don't see your wounds."

"Piggyback ride?! How old do you think I am!"

"I don't know. How old are you?"

"...17"

"I'm 18 so I'm the adult here. Lean against the dumpster for a second so that I can give you my jacket."

Bruno sighed and leaned against the dumpster.
Leone took of his jacket and gave it to Bruno.
Bruno put it on and pulled the hood over his head so that nobody could recognize him.

Leone stood with his back in Bruno's direction and crouched a bit for him. Bruno hesitated a bit but then climbed on his back.

Bruno was a bit startled when Leone started to walk. "You're quite strong" he said quiet enough so that only Leone could hear him.

Leone grinned a bit. "We have to carry a lot at the academy. We also had a lot of bootcamps."

"What kind of academy?"

"The police academy."

Bruno then started to panic a bit. "So...you're training to become a cop?" He asked him while trying not to sound panicked.

Leone nodded. "Yes. I'd like to protect the innocent people here in the city. I've wanted to become one since I was 7 so I'm on my way to fulfilling my dream. What did you want to become when you were younger?"

Bruno was relieved that he didn't have to change the subject himself and sounding suspicious in the process. "Well my father was a fisherman so when I was younger I also wanted to become one to help him."

"Really? That sounds cool. Did your father also have his own boat and all that?"

Bruno nodded. "Yep. Sometimes he would take me on the boat. I was too young to help because that work is quite heavy but I would watch the see and sometimes wave at other ships. It was fun." He smiled a bit at the memories.

"What happened to that dream?"

"Well...something happened to my father and he ended up dying some months ago. I don't have enough money to pay the maintenance of the ship so I sold it and now I just do some small jobs."
It wasn't a lie technically. His father did die some months ago and he did sell the boat. The small jobs also wasn't a lie technically, the jobs just weren't what you would expect. But Leone didn't need to know that.

"I'm sorry for you. I don't know if it makes you feel better but I also don't have any parents to live with. They died when I was young so I was in foster care for most of my life." Leone walked in the direction of his apartment.

"Hmm" Bruno sighed a bit. "Are we almost there?"

He nodded. "Yes, almost."

"Good" Bruno smiles a bit and decided to lean his head against Leone's shoulder.

Leone shoulders stiffened a bit but continued walking.

The rest of the walk was quiet. In the apartment building he stepped into the elevator and clicked on the button of the floor where his apartment was.

"Are you still awake Bruno?" Leone asked while in the elevator.

"Hmhm" Bruno nodded slightly. "Yes I'm still awake."

When the doors opened Leone stepped out of the elevator. He walked to his door. He held his leg tightly, took his keys and opened the door. Then he walked to the couch and dropped bruno on it.

Bruno made a small noise when he was dropped, being a bit startled. Then he relaxed on the couch. "Much better."

Leone went to close the door and he locked it so that they wouldn't have any unexpected visitors. He dropped his shopping bag on the table and then searched for some alcohol to disinfect Bruno's wounds. He had to do a first aid cursus so he knew what I could do.

"Leone?"

"Hmm?" Leone walked to Bruno with some towels and alcohol.

"This place stinks. Do you ever clean it?"

"What?! Then go to a fucking hospi-"

"Just kidding. It doesn't smell that bad. I just wanted to see how you would react." Bruno chuckled.

Leone sighed and crouched down next to the couch. "You bitch..." he mumbled. He took some scissors and cut open Bruno's shirt.

"Hey that's my shirt!"

"Pulling it off would hurt you more. I will give you one of mine." He put the scissors away and then looked at his chest that now was exposed.
"You have a lot of bruises..."

"don't stare at me like that. And I know." Bruno was a bit embarrassed.

"Hey, I'm just doing what I have to do." Leone started to disinfect Bruno's wounds on his chest.

Bruno didn't say a word after that and stared at the ceiling.

"Are you okay Bruno? Does it hurt?"

Bruno shook his head. "I'm used to it by now."

He decided not to ask what he meant by used to.
"Do you want to take a bath after this? Then I will cook some dinner in the meantime. After that you can stay here or go home. Whatever you want to, Okay?"

Bruno nodded and smiled at bit. "That sounds good."

Some hours later Bruno woke up. He tried to remember where he was and what happened.
After Leone had cleaned his wounds he had taken a bath, got wrapped up in bandages, put on one of Leone's sweaters and ate dinner with him. He had decided to stay there to sleep a bit. Why? He himself also didn't know the answer. Maybe it was because he hadn't had a normal conversation with someone his own age in years.

But now he had to go.

He looked at a clock on the wall,
It was around 3 am. He was probably still asleep. Leone offered him his bed and he took the couch.

Bruno sat up and stepped out of the bed. He walked as quiet as possible to the living room.

Leone was still asleep, just like he had predicted. He looked quite peaceful there. His white hair was short and a bit messed up after all the carrying he had to do that day. He was smiling while sleeping.

Bruno smiled while looking at him. He then took pen and paper and wrote a small message for him.

'I am severely sorry
Leone Abbacchio,
but I have to go now.
Sorry that I can't say
bye while you are
awake. I hope our paths
cross again.

,Bruno Bucciarati'

He laid the paper with the pen on the table and then looked back at the man sleeping on the couch for the last time.

"Goodbye Leone Abbacchio." He whispered and he left the apartment.
