Chapter 10
Well, a few months have passed since I quit my job and in that time, Katrina decided to move in with me, which was great.
But, after seven long years of getting up early every day and going to work, all this free time was starting to get to me. I didn't know what to do with myself anymore, I had no purpose. My life had no more adventure. I had become lazy and Katrina was beginning to notice it as well.
Luckily, she's an amazing person and was determined to get me out of my rut...
I sat on the couch, lazily flipping through the channels on my TV, a freshly opened bag of chips sitting in my lap.
"You're doing it again." Katrina said as she walked into the room.
I looked up at her, throwing a few chips into my mouth. "Doing what?"
She chuckled, sitting down next to me. "Nothing. Absolutely nothing."
"I'm watching TV and eating chips, that's two things right there." I replied, a mouthful of chips.
She laughed again, taking the remote from my hand and shutting the TV off. "C'mon, let's go do something."
I sat up, eating a few more chips. "Like what?"
She stood up, snatching the chips from me. "Well, first we're gonna start by putting these away."
I wiped my hands on my sweatpants and stood up. "Alright, now what?"
She set the bag on the kitchen table before looking me up and down. "Now, we get rid of those 'I gave up on my life' pants."
I chuckled a little. "Ok, ok, I get it. I'll change."
She smiled, planting a soft kiss on my lips. "Good, then meet me in the parking lot."
"Why?"
"It's a surprise, just trust me."
I smiled, kissing her again. "Fine, I'll be down in a few."
After taking a quick shower, which I definitely needed, and getting changed, I met Katrina in the parking lot.
She stood next to a classic convertible, a bright smile on her face.
"Who's car is this?" I asked.
"Mine, I just bought it."
I nodded. "What the hell is it?"
"A '67 Chrysler Newport."
"Right... it's, uh, cool?"
She chuckled. "Look, the cars not the reason I brought you down here."
"Ok, then what is?"
She suddenly dropped down to one knee. "Shelby, will you marry me?"
"Uh, what?" I asked, stunned at the suddenness of the question.
She smirked. "C'mon, you heard me, will you marry me?"
A smile started to form on my lips. "You're crazy, you know that?"
She laughed. "That's beside the point, now stop dodging the question."
I returned her laugh, a few happy tears forming in my eyes. "You know what? Yes, I think I will marry you."
She first pumped the air before standing and planting a deep kiss on my lips. "I'm glad you said that. Now, we can proceed with part two of my master plan."
I chuckled a little, wiping at my eyes. "Which is?"
She gestured to the car. "A road trip."
"Really? That's your big plan?"
She smiled and nodded. "Isn't it great?"
"Sure, but, where are we gonna go?"
"To our wedding, obviously. But, first, we have to pick up a few guests and meet each others parents."
I couldn't help but laugh, rubbing my forehead. "You're really serious about this?"
"As serious as a heart attack." She replied, a hopeful smile on her face.
I couldn't help but return it. "Alright, I'll pack a few things then we can go."
She grabbed my arm, leading me to the passenger seat. "No time, we have to go now if we wanna stick to the schedule."
I got in the passenger seat. "What schedule?"
She ran over to the drivers seat. "We're getting married in a week and we sure as hell don't wanna be late to our own wedding."
I put my hands up. "Wait, a week? When did you plan all of this?"
She started the car. "Yesterday."
I closed my eyes, shaking my head. "You planned a whole wedding, road trip, thing in a day?"
She shrugged. "More or less... I'm just getting tired of seeing you sit around all day. You said it yourself, you need some adventure in your life... So, I thought, there's nothing more adventurous than a wedding, or a road trip-"
"Or both of them put together." I finished with a chuckle.
She smiled, putting the car in drive. "Exactly."
Then, she sped out into the street, jumping onto the highway.
I looked over at her, watching the wind blowing through her hair. "I love you, Katrina."
She flashed me a quick smile. "I love you to, Shelby. Now, why don't you give Julia and Luna a heads up, so they're ready when we get there."
I pulled my phone out, sending each of them a quick text. "Alright, Julia's excited. But, Luna hasn't replied yet."
"Alright, Julia's first then."
I laughed as we sped off the highway, making our way towards Julia's house.
She was already outside when we pulled into her driveway.
She ran up, a big smile on her face. "Wow, nice car."
"Thanks, now hop in, we gotta go." Katrina rushed.
I got out and let Julia in the backseat, barely able to get back in myself before Katrina sped out of the driveway and towards Luna's house.
When we pulled up, we saw her and Todd standing in her front yard, arguing.
"C'mon, baby, don't do this." Todd pleaded.
Luna smacked him across the face. "If you're gonna cheat on me, at least have the decency to do it at your own house."
Then, she walked past him, heading towards the car.
I let her in as well before turning my attention to Todd. "Better luck next time, asswipe."
We all waved at him as Katrina sped down the street, hopping back on the highway.
"Well, that was fun and all, but where the hell are we going?" Luna asked.
Katrina and I shared a quick smile.
"You wanna tell them?" I asked.
"Nah, you go ahead." Katrina replied.
"I don't care who tells it, just do it fast, before I leave." Luna said, folding her arms over her chest."
We laughed and I turned around, facing them in the back seat. "We're getting married!"
Julia's face lit up. "Oh my god, that's amazing! Congrats guys!"
"Thanks." I replied.
"That still doesn't explain where you're taking us." Luna said.
"First stop is Shelby's parents house." Katrina replied.
"Then Katrina's parents, then the wedding venue." I added.
Luna nodded. "Alright, I guess I can stick around for that."
We laughed, getting comfortable in our seats as Katrina sped down the highway towards our first destination...
"Wait, can we start with your parents?" I asked.
Katrina shot me a quick look. "Why? Yours are closer."
I looked down. "Yeah, well, I haven't really spoken to them in a few years."
"How many?" Julia asked.
I let out a big sigh. "Thirteen-ish."
Luna started to laugh. "So, you haven't spoken to them in over a decade and the first thing you're gonna tell them is: 'guess what, I'm getting married?' Damn, this is gonna be fun."
I exhaled slowly, staring out the windshield. "Yeah... 'fun'..."
To be continued...
