Chapter 8: "Taehyung: A cover"
""Oh well, it's good." Hoseok answered, sounding not too sure about it. "We had to delay the opening, but it's going to be okay." He ended, nodding and smiling in a reassuring way. He was always such a positive person."

"Argh!!" Taehyung groaned as he rolled on his bed. He was exhausted, couldn't even open his eyes and cursed himself for staying up so early last night. He moved his arm blindly towards his night stand and silenced that annoying sound. He fell back on his bed and spread his arms feeling the soft sheets under his fingers. When had he become like this? He was sure he was happy but he thought his youth had been taken away too soon for him to adjust. It felt like life had just passed him by and got him caught in the flow without even asking him whether he wanted it or not.
He rolled to the side, saw he was already some minutes behind and got up from the bed without hesitation. At least that day he only had to work half of the day and he had the whole weekend to look forward to, so he put a smile on his face and staggered his way to the bathroom. He washed his face, brushed his teeth and went out to the living room to wake his cousin up. Taehyung sighed deeply, he knew it wasn't going to be an easy task.
"Jimin-ah... it's time to wake up." He said moving his cousin's shoulders who was sleeping soundly on the couch. Too soundly for Taehyung's liking. "C'mon, we have to go to work..." He tried again lifting his cousin's light body a little but there was no sign of him waking.
Taehyung couldn't blame him. It was six in the morning and they had got home around five... Oh my god! He thought. I only slept for one hour. He ran a hand through his face and sighed again. He couldn't be such a bad cousin to wake the poor Jimin up. Besides, he probably wasn't completely sober yet. He decided to leave him sleep and make up some excuse at work to cover for him. He went back into his room, changed into a suit and went out. It was chilly, he lifted his collar up and crossed the outdoor garage until he reached his car. Already inside he let out a deep breath, relieved by the instant warmth. Turning on the ignition he realised how sore he was and how much sleep his body needed. Brushing off that idea and promising himself to stop staying out late on work days he pulled into the driveway. Although he knew he wouldn't keep his promise, he never did... Taehyung sighed.
He drove to a nearby cafe, got himself a steaming latte and continued his way towards the company building. When he arrived he went in, got inside the elevator and walked through the corridor that led to the staff break room. He had no intention of coming across his father or uncle, but of course, fate had another plan for him.
"Tae!" His uncle encountered him in the middle of the corridor. Taehyung had been with his head down to avoid any unwanted meetings but had to look up at the sound of his uncle's and boss's voice. "I've been looking for you for ages."
Taehyung frowned and glanced at his wrist watch. "But, I'm still half an hour early."
"Yes, yes," his uncle waved a hand in an attempt to change the subject. "Where's Jimin? He didn't sleep at home last night."
Oh, so that's why his uncle was looking a little bit disheveled. He was probably worried Jimin had run away or something. Taehyung gave an imperceptible chuckle. "Oh! I forgot to tell you... Didn't Jimin call you though?" He said feigning surprise. If there was something he was good at, that was acting.
His uncle shook his head vigorously. "Oh, that's odd..." Taehyung scratched his chin for effect. "Well, he came home yesterday after work, he wasn't feeling very well so I told him not to come to my mother's dinner-party. When I came back home he was already asleep. This morning he didn't look too well either so I told him to stay in and call a doctor."
"Oh..." His uncle sighed deeply. "I-I... I thought he had run away or something..."
"Oh no Uncle, he wouldn't, I guess he was just a little bit drained, that's all, but he'll get used to it, don't worry." Taehyung thought he was finally free when his uncle furrowed his brow again.
"But, why doesn't he answer my calls then?"
Ups. His uncle wasn't going to be fooled that easily, he had already seen it all after all the times Taehyung had covered up for Jimin. "His phone is probably dead." Taehyung tried to give the most convincingly innocent look ever while shrugging his shoulders. But his uncle wasn't having it, his brow was still furrowed and his brain seemed to be working maniacally. He needed to do something, he needed to distract him, so he kept on talking. "Why didn't you call me instead?"
"Oh..." Mr. Kim suddenly seemed to focus again on his nephew, forgetting what he had been thinking about. "I recalled you had your mother's dinner-party and didn't want to bother you there, I figured I could ask you this morning, so..."
Taehyung nodded. His uncle was such a thoughtful person, unlike his father who would have probably grabbed him by the collar and taken him out of the party, just because he needed his son to tell him where the maid had put his night pills. When in reality, his son never had a clue, he only looked for them until he found them, always wondering why his father couldn't do the same. He sometimes envied Jimin so much, he had a caring father and he took him for granted. He tried to brush those thoughts away or he would end up just confessing everything to his now glassy eyed uncle.
"Don't worry Uncle." He said resting one hand on the older man's shoulder. "You did good, and he will be okay, it's probably just a cold."
Mr. Kim seemed to want to say something but then he reconsidered it and bottled in whatever it was that was on his mind. He nodded instead.
Taehyung continued his way down the corridor to the staff break room while releasing a big breath. That was close. He thought.
When he got there, his eyes immediately fell upon a high table where some workers were already chatting, having their breakfast and waiting for the time when they would have to go to work. Those workers weren't just random workers and that's why they caught his attention. Jungkook was sitting there conversing animatedly with the new worker Ami. Next to both of them was another girl whose name he didn't remember but knew she was part of the assistance staff. Taehyung felt a little tingling sensation at the pit of his stomach at the sight in front of him. He couldn't quite place the reason for the sensation but knew it had to do with how much Jungkook and Ami seemed to be enjoying each other's company. When had they met? How did they become so close? Ami had just started working yesterday...
He decided to just crash their conversation, so he approached them and talked immediately, interrupting Jungkook mid-sentence.
"Wow! What are those bags under your eyes Kookie? 'Been out late?" He said winking.
Taehyung was very aware of his own black circles but he expected the younger to just feel embarrassed and blush, so what Jungkook answered took him by surprise.
"You are one to talk, Hyung. How's your distant cousin?" Jungkook said, raising an eyebrow, almost smirking, which made Taehyung blush a little.
"Jungkook-ah!" He said slapping Jungkook's shoulder, which made the younger chuckle. "That's not fair!"
"Whatever you say Hyung." Jungkook mumbled while laughing now openly.
Taehyung sat on the chair in front of the girl he didn't know the name of and looked to his left where he came across a very confused Ami.
"Hi, how was your first day at work?" He asked in an attempt to take hold of the conversation and prevent Jungkook's and Ami's chat from continuing. He wasn't really sure why he didn't want it to continue but he knew he really didn't want it.
"Um... It went well." She said looking down at her hands. "Jungkook-oppa here was giving me some advice on how to work with Yoongi sir."
Taehyung turned to Jungkook and raised his eyebrows as if questioning: Oppa? But Jungkook only smiled in response, all bunny smile and crescent eyes. Taehyung's insides churned but he wasn't able to dwell on the matter any further because in that precise instant he felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to see his hyung's face beaming down at him.
"How's it going boys?" His hyung inquired as soon as he met Taehyung's eyes.
"Hobi-hyung!" Taehyung exclaimed, hugging him by the waist. "I've missed you... Why don't you come more often?"
"Oh, Sorry Taehyung-ah, 'been really busy lately."
"How's the dance studio taking off hyung?" Jungkook asked, having a sip of his coffee.
"Oh well, it's good." Hoseok answered, sounding not too sure about it. "We had to delay the opening, but it's going to be okay." He ended, nodding and smiling in a reassuring way. He was always such a positive person.
"Hm... Well I'm glad Hyung, you know you can always count on us right?"
"Yes Jungkookie, I know... Oh! I almost forgot!" Hoseok suddenly said, raising his voice, which made Taehyung jump a little since the older was too close to his ear. "The opening is next Sunday, and we need as many people as we can to promote it. Jungkook, if you hadn't asked I would have probably forgotten." He chuckled.
"Oh sure Hyung..." Jungkook didn't seem too sure.
"Yes, yes, and Taehyung-ah, don't forget to tell Jiminie."
"If you came more often you would know Jiminie started working here yesterday." Taehyung pouted and crossed his arms. He wasn't just acting, he really missed his hyung. Since he had moved to another department he had gone form seeing him every day to only seeing him every once in a while when they all got together.
"What?! Jimin is working here and nobody told me?!" Hoseok was craning his neck everywhere as if he thought Jimin was hiding somewhere in the break room area. "Where is he?"
"Oh!" Teahyung had totally forgotten about having to cover up for his cousin so he immediately went into acting mode. "He wasn't feeling very well today so he called in sick."
"On his second day of work?" Hoseok arched one suspicious eyebrow.
Taehyung gulped, he had never been able to lie too much to his hyungs. He turned to look at Jungkook who seemed to have found a very entertaining hobby: fidgeting with the sleeve of his white shirt.
"Yeah... Well, you know him." He shrugged his shoulders hoping his Hyung wouldn't push it any further.
"Anyway, Jungkook-ah, make sure Jin-hyung and Namjoon-ah come too." Luckily his hyung had other more important things in mind.
Jungkook suddenly raised his head, which he had lowered previously at the sound of his boss's name. "Oh, they won't be too happy to hear that." Jungkook chuckled.
"Huh?" Hoseok was confused.
"Just imagine Namjoon-hyung and Jin-hyung dancing." He laughed at the thought. "It's going to be soooo funny." He couldn't stop his laughter now.
Taehyung and Hoseok joined him, making the two girls feel a little bit out of place. Hoseok noticed that and spoke, making the younger boys hush their laughters.
"I'll be very happy if you two can come too." He smiled. "I'm Jung Hoseok by the way." He bowed his head a little.
"Oh right!" Ami suddenly spoke facepalming. "You are here for the dance break of "ON", aren't you?"
"Yes? How... would... you... know... that?..." Hoseok looked at her suspiciously.
"Oh, I'm Ami, Producer Min's new assistant." She beamed.
Hoseok tilted his head in confusion. "How... is that possib... Did I miss something?" He turned to look at Jungkook, who was now watching his very interesting shoes under the table.
Taehyung thought of letting Jungkook answer because for some reason he felt a tiny bit irritated towards the younger but then he thought he looked too cute and decided to spare him the agony of talking about his new boss.
"Jungkook's been transferred. He is now Jiminie's assistant while Ami became Yoongi-hyung's new assistant. But of course, you know none of these because you are never around." Was he pushing it too far? Did he sound like a jealous boyfriend? Because he definitely didn't want to give that impression at all.
"Ah, Taehyung-ah..." Hoseok slapped his little brother's shoulder in a playful way. "So... You've met Jiminie then?"
Why was Hobi-hyung being so pushy? He couldn't save Jungkookie from that one, though.
"Ah.. yeah..." Jungkook mumbled without even looking up for a second from his perfectly polished shoes.
Hoseok tilted his head in confusion again and Taehyung knew he had to do something to change the subject or something awkward was going to happen.
"Oh! Look at the time!" He exclaimed a little too dramatically. "It's already eight, we should get to work!"
"Since when are you so eager to start working?" Hoseok raised one suspicious eyebrow.
"Since you left." Taehyung answered cheekily while standing up from his chair. "Yup! Things changed while you were away."
The two girls and Jungkook followed Taehyung and stood up. The girl whose name he didn't know was already exiting the break room area and Ami seemed to want to linger a bit, but then decided against it, so she turned around and made her way through the end of the room to continue through the corridor.
"I haven't been... Oh wait!" Hoseok suddenly exclaimed at the sight of Ami leaving.
Ami turned around on her heels with a little blush on her cheeks. Cute.
"I'm coming with you." And with that Hoseok walked towards Ami and they both left through the corridor that led to Yoongi's office.
Taehyung thanked The Lord his hyung had been distracted by Ami leaving because he really couldn't take that conversation any longer. He knew his hyung was insistent and wouldn't stop until he got to the end of things. He looked to his right and saw that he and Jungkook had been left alone. The room was already emptying itself due to people starting their daily activities so it was natural for both of them to make their way together towards the exit.
They were walking in silence through the opposite corridor Hoseok and Ami had disappeared into, when Taehyung talked.
"So you've met Ami?" He didn't look at his young brother.
"Yes? How do you know her?" Jungkook furrowed his brows. He sounded a little bit awkward which made Taehyung's heart sink.
Jungkook had never felt awkward with him before. Was it because of the question Taehyung had just asked him? Was it because of what had happened last night?
"Oh, I had to escort her to Yoongi-hyung's pit yesterday."
"Oh, I came across her when I was making Jimin-hyu... sir coffee." Jungkook answered, stuttering a bit in the middle of his sentence.
"Why are you so resistant to calling Jimin Hyung?" Taehyung changed the subject because he could no longer talk about Ami with Jungkook. He didn't really know why he was having that many feelings and emotions... He was probably too tired. He had had only one hour of sleep for god's sake!
"I prefer to be respectful."
Taehyung snorted. "Are these the lies you are feeding my cousin with?" Taehyung raised his eyebrows in disbelief and when Jungkook didn't answer he continued. "When did you ever call Yoongi-hyung sir?"
"I-I... I'm just trying to help him be the most efficient. I just think it will be counterproductive if we get too comfortable with each other."
Jungkook and his difficult words. Taehyung gave an internal eye-roll. "Right." He answered instead.
They had reached Jimin's office. Taehyung still needed to walk a little bit more to get to the end of the corridor where his office was, where Hyunah-noona was most probably waiting for him with her hands on her hips and a scowl on her face, ready to scold him for being five minutes late. He sighed and continued his way, leaving an equally tormented Jungkook behind.
