Chapter 14: "Jimin: Wise Tae"

"They stood there for some minutes hugging and laughing with and at each other."

•••

"I can't believe you actually convinced me into doing this."

Jimin was looking at himself in the mirror, next to him, in the chair beside him, his cousin was smiling like an idiot. Jimin had never felt a stronger urge to punch him square in the jaw.

Taehyung had spent the whole Saturday begging for Jimin to accompany him to the hairdresser's since he wanted to change his hair colour, Taehyung was known for displaying a different hair dye every two weeks or so. But what Jimin didn't know was that his cousin would trick him into dying his own hair too.

"Don't worry Jiminie, you'll look fabulous." Taehyung smiled at his cousin.

"I just don't get why we had to do it right before Hyung's opening! What if something goes wrong and we are not able to go? Hobi-hyung will kill us!"

"Jimin, stop making excuses. You need a makeover, and for your information I do this on a daily basis, there's nothing that can go wrong. We'll be out of here in no time, don't stress yourself." Taehyung was suddenly dead serious.

"I just still don't understand why I need a makeover, honestly."

"Because... you just do, Chim, trust me on this one."

Jimin seemed to want to answer something when the hairdresser suddenly appeared right behind his chair with a lot of utensils that looked a little bit too threatening in his eyes, making him eat his words.

"Um... what colour are you going to be doing to me?" Jimin asked with a wary tone to the girl behind him, who was now mixing some kinds of slimy substances in a bowl.

But the girl didn't respond, she kept on working on the hair dye.

"Chim, don't waste your voice, I told her not to tell you."

"What?!" Jimin snapped his neck to the side to look at his cousin, his eyes throwing daggers. "You were the one who decided the colour?!"

"Well," Taehyung shrugged while raising his hands in the air. "who else did you expect to decide it?"

"There's no way! I'm bailing, I want out." Jimin was already standing up from his chair when the hairdresser behind him suddenly put her hands on his shoulders and pushed him down until he was sitting again. In no time she had Jimin's hair covered in a white kind of cream. It was at that moment that he realised two things. One, there was no turning back and two, he wanted to cry.

Minutes later, another hairdresser came and started working on his cousin's hair. Taehyung seemed like a boy in a theme park, he was grinning from ear to ear and wasn't at all aware of the mental breakdown Jimin was having just an inch away from him. He wasn't just worried about his hair, actually, he had other more important things to worry about.

The day had finally come and all the courage and bravery Jimin had been gathering throughout the week was waning by the second. In some hours he would be attending Hoseok's studio opening and he would have to finally face Jungkook. He would have to talk to him, demand explanations from him and it didn't help that he would be displaying a new hair color that, knowing Taehyung would probably be a ridiculous one. Jimin groaned.

"You okay Chim?" Taehyung asked after hearing his cousin's groan. He was trying to look at Jimin without turning his head, when he actually could just look at him in the mirror.

"Um... yeah, I guess..." Jimin didn't sound too sure of his statement.

"Jiminie, you know you can tell me anything right?"

"Yes... it's just that... Aish!" Jimin groaned again. "It's just this hair dye that is making me nervous!"

"Are you sure it is only about the hair?" Taehyung asked in a soft tone, knowing his cousin all too well.

"Yes! What else would I be worried about?"

"Um... I don't know... maybe Jungkook?"

Jimin sighed. He had not expected to hear that name this early in the day. "I-I... yeah, I think I'm getting cold feet about talking to him." He sighed again. "Maybe I should just leave it be, I mean, if he was reassigned because he asked to be or not... I just... What's the point of asking him?"

"What's the point? Are you serious? You drove me crazy for the past week because you couldn't find him anywhere and now that you'll be face to face you just back away?"

"Tae..."

"You're afraid of what he'll say, aren't you?"

"The thing is I already know what he'll say. He will tell me that I'm even more useless than he had thought and teaching me is to no avail."

Taehyung rolled his eyes at the same moment both hairdressers left them for the colour to settle. "Jimin, listen to me. You. Are. Not. Useless. If there was ever someone useless at the company, that was me. And if Hyunah-noona was able to make me useful, then anything is possible." He was now looking at his cousin very intensely, which made Jimin unable to move his eyes from his. "Now, what I really think is that you are not afraid of him having asked to be reassigned but you are afraid of him not having asked to be reassigned."

Jimin broke into a fit of laughter. "Are you stupid or something?" Jimin was still laughing.

"I sincerely don't know what's so funny." Taehyung kept a serious expression.

"Tae! Are you even listening to what you are saying?"

"Yes. Why?"

"Because it doesn't make sense!" Jimin exclaimed, having stopped laughing.

"Yes it does." Taehyung arched an eyebrow. "And you know it does. If Jungkook asked to be reassigned, then it would mean that he thinks about you, in a good or a bad way it doesn't matter, but he definitely has you in his mind, right?" Jimin was speechless at his cousin's words. "But, if he didn't ask for it and it was the company's decision, then it probably means that he has already forgotten all about you. So that's what you are afraid of, isn't it? You are afraid of going up to him and asking him why he stopped being your assistant and him just answering, unaffected, that he was just told to."

"I-I..."

"I know Chim, it's a lot to digest, but that said, I want you to understand that it's definitely not the second case. Jungkook clearly asked to be reassigned because he couldn't put up with your cuteness." Taehyung ended with a proud looking face.

Jimin's eyes went wide. To say he was taken aback was an understatement. His cousin had just made him go on a rollercoaster of emotions. What was wrong with Taehyung today? "I-I... I don't understand what you are saying."

"What I'm basically saying is that Jungkook is another victim of the Jimin effect."

Jimin choked on his saliva. Was he hearing right? Was this the same person who a week ago had told him not to play with Jungkook and the day before that, he had explicitly told him Jungkook was straight?

"Tae, what the hell are you talking about? First of all, Jungkook is straight and second, you were the one who told me not to get involved with him because if I hurt him you would kill me!"

"Well, I'm not saying Jungkook is not straight, I'm just saying he could be bending a little." He grinned.

"Oh? So am I allowed to try something with him now?"

"I never said you weren't. I just told you not to hurt him."

"Aish this kid!" Jimin was frustrated and his head was itching. He brought a hand to his hair ready to scratch his head when he remembered his hair was covered in hair dye. Aish! Damn you Taehyung!

"Listen Chim. At first I thought you only wanted to have a little fun with him, which is what you usually want..." Jimin slapped his arm and Taehyung let out an "Ouch!" before continuing. "But, seeing how you are acting all nervous right now it has made me think that you might be getting some feelings for him..."

"That's definitely not..." Jimin interrupted, but couldn't finish his sentence because his cousin interrupted him too.

"Don't lie to me Jimin!"

"Fine! I don't know what I'm feeling, but it's hopeless anyway because he's straight!"

"Jimin, Jimin, Jimin if I didn't know you any better I would say you are actually doubting your charms."

"I am NOT doubting my charms Tae! I'm just being realistic, there's no way of going against nature. If he doesn't like men, then there's nothing I can do." He finished and looked at his hands. Saying those words out loud didn't make it more real than if he kept them inside, but hearing them made his stomach churn. It was like accepting a reality that if he had kept it in silence he would, maybe,  have been able to avoid.

"Look, I used to think the exact same way, but nature is not an exact science Chimmy. It doesn't work like that, it doesn't make straight, gay, bisexual or pansexual people. It just makes people. Those labels were created and put by men, not nature."

"What are you trying to say?" Jimin furrowed his eyebrows.

"What I'm saying is that those labels don't exist, maybe they get the closest possible to a human's sexuality but they are definitely not all there is to a human's sexuality." Taehyung paused, he seemed conflicted about choosing whether to say his next words or not. "Look, I can assure you that a straight man who has always liked women, has fallen in love with some of them, and has felt indescribable things from them multiple times is more than able to fall in love with another man."

"What?" To say Jimin was confused was putting it lightly.

"Just think about it, Chim! We fall in love with people, with personalities, not with bodies and faces. It makes a lot more sense to be able to fall in love with anyone, no matter their gender, than to only fall in love with a specific gender, don't you think?"

"Well..." Jimin didn't know how to put it. "I'm gay and I don't think I could ever be attracted to a girl."

"You say that now, but when you meet someone that..." Taehyung suddenly went silent at the look his cousin was giving him. Had he talked too much? Had he got carried away?

"Have you met someone Tae?" Jimin's scowl deepened.

"No. All I'm saying is that Jungkook could feel the same way about you, regardless of him being straight."

"Are you sure? Because you said that..." But Jimin couldn't finish what he was saying because at that exact moment the hairdressers returned to wash their hair, so they were both taken to separate places, making their conversation to end abruptly.

Wow. Was the only word Jimin's mind could form. His hair was being washed while his mind was working at a hundred kilometers per hour. First and foremost, what the hell had just happened? Secondly, when had Taehyung become so wise? Those two questions were mildly easy to answer but there was a third one that Jimin didn't even know if he dared ask. Had Taehyung been talking from experience? Has he ever felt something for a girl before? No. Definitely not. Taehyung was the gayest person Jimin had ever met, even gayer than him, which was already saying a lot.

"Okay. You're done." A sudden girly voice brought Jimin back to reality.

"Ah... Oh... Okay, thank you."

Jimin stood up. He had been so caught up in his own mind that he hadn't even noticed when the hairdresser had stopped washing his hair and moved to drying it, but miraculously it was already dry. He walked to the main salon again to find a blue haired Taehyung looking at him with wide eyes.

"Oh my god!"

"Oh my god!"

They both screamed in unison before pointing at each other with their index fingers and bringing the other hand to their mouths. At the sight of the other one doing the exact same thing that they were doing, both cousins started laughing. They laughed until their stomach hurt and when they were able to finally move from their position they both hugged each other to greet their new appearance in the mirror.

Jimin looked at his reflection in the mirror. His once blond hair was now a light shade of pink. He thought there wasn't a worse colour than pink, but nevertheless couldn't help his smile from growing even bigger at the sight of his newly dyed hair in the mirror.

They stood there for some minutes hugging and laughing with and at each other.
