Interviewee #4 - SimonRug
Username: SimonRug
Real name: Simon
Where are you come from?
USA.
Why do you like to write?
It's a fun way to express myself and gives me a creative outlet. Plus, it passes the time!
When did you start writing?
I started writing all the way back in third grade I think. Which was 2011. Though I always wrote in my notebook for school and I didn't use Wattpad until 2017.
Is English your mother tongue? If not, what is?
Heck yeah it is 😎.
How did you find out about Wattpad?
My friend from school told my brother about it and he told me.
How long have you been using Wattpad?
Since 2017.
Are there any moments that have inspired you to write?
All my books have different inspiration. What inspired me to write is a mystery because it was almost a whole decade ago. Now I kinda take inspiration from life around me. Like the Detective Pin Quadrilogy characters are all inspired on my pets I've had throughout my life.
Does your culture affect your writing in anyway?
Well my culture affects everything about how I write.
Are you a night owl or a day ant :
Night owl definitely. Always have been.
What are the problems you have when writing?
If I ever have a writing block it takes me a while to pick up again. I also don't like reading my own books because I always see the mistakes I made and want to fix all of them.
How much time do you take to write a chapter?
An hour or two typically.
How do you select the names for your characters?
My character names all come from my past or present friends. I like to incorporate all my friends into my book. For example, Joseph Thornton from Am I Feeling Correctly? has two of my friend's names. "Joseph" is my best friend's middle name and "Thornton" is my other friend's last name! Or even Jaiden Tibbs from Nelson the Cat and his DANK Adventures collection is the name of my best friend from freshman and sophomore year. All my friends give me inspiration for names, so your rarely see a character without a name of one of them.
Do you research things before writing? If so, what are the sites you use?
Yes! It's important to me that I don't make any mistakes and that I am completely accurate on what I write. Some books, though, require more research than others. I don't use any particular websites, just whatever can give me the right answer or information the most accurately and elaborates the best.
Do you listen to music while writing? Do you have any playlists for writing?
I use to do it a lot, but I always find myself singing along which distracts me lol. Just my own epic playlist of all my favorite songs.
What does writing mean to you?
It's meant a fun way to get excited when someone reads my book or a way I can express all the ideas in my mind and show the world and see what they think. It also helps me discover what my past self was like and how much my English has improved haha.
In regards to writing, what's your happiest moment?
Probably the day I found it. I was so excited I wrote my first book "Detective Pin: The Poison" in just two days.
What do your friends and family think about your writing?
Well most of my friends and family don't read my books, but what they have read they liked.
Is writing a part-time or a full-time job for you?
A hobby at most. It's just something I have fun doing. My best writing comes in the first few hours, so writing all day like a full time job wouldn't be a good idea.
What do you do for a living?
Well I'm a high school student, so I study for a living. I do Speech & Debate and Theatre. Acting is my passion!
Who is your favorite author?
I actually don't have one. I like reading books from everyone. Not a specific person's writing I like better than anyone else.
What is your favorite book?
I have the best memories reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid mostly when I was a kid.
Who is your favorite Wattpad author?
Whoever my friend is, who decides they want to write on Wattpad too. I'm bias for sure.
What's your favorite Wattpad book?
I mostly write, so I don't read all that much. I really liked this one book "Expiration Date" a lot though.
How many books have you written?
I have written 15 books (17 if you want to count the collection books I have for my series like Detective Pin and Nelson the Cat).
Which in your opinion is your best book?
I think my books get better and better the more I write, so you'll often find my best work is what I have been recently working on. I'm really proud on how "Am I Feeling Correctly?" Is coming along, but I think my best work is my Nelson the Cat and his DANK Adventures collection. Always makes me laugh.
Which genre do you like writing?
I'd say humor because I just love making people laugh and myself. Plus, humor helps me write the best ideas.
What do you think success is?
Success is when I'm doing something I love for a living and the people I love support me all the way there. Motivation is a very crucial thing to me, so when my friends and family encourage me, it's easy to keep going.
Do you have any tips for writers out there?
Don't worry whether your book is on par with all the Watty winners or the best selling books because everyone is different and books are judged on the work you put into the them not the perfection. Have fun because your book could be the next Netflix movie for all you know haha.
How do you overcome your writer's block?
I look for motivation around me to find new ideas and I give myself a lot of time to think of what I think needs to happen next and how I'll get there.
Would you like to say something to the readers and writers of our community?
Thanks for being here guys. If it wasn't for you guys, I wouldn't be writing today! :)
