Interviewee #12 - Witto150
Username: Witto150
Real Name (optional):
I'll use my pen name which is Evelin A. Hope ;-)
1. Where are you from? (Country / State)
I'm from the Czech Republic. It's a small country in the heart of Europe. I think it's best known for its beer, Olomoucke Cheese (very smelly ones), and Karel Gott.
2. When did you start writing? (At what age or which year)
I suppose that was around the end of elementary school. Those stories were only in my notebook, so nothing got on the Internet (we didn't have it at that time anyway) - Thankfully XD Those were inspired by Pokemon. One "original" story had a huge inspiration from Dragon Ball Z.
3. Why do you like to write?
During middle school, I had a strong urge to tell a BL story with a fantasy setting, a bit of isekai spice, and cookie-obsessed incubuses :-D It was one of the rare longer stories I finished. At that time, it was entirely in my mother language, but I had a few readers and fans who commented and liked it.
4. Is English your mother tongue? If not, what is it?
My mother language is the Czech Language, which is used like only in my country XD And in the neighborhood areas where you can use it to "communicate" in shops. It's considered to be quite complex, as we have specific "characteristics" for verbs or nouns and other stuff.
5. How did you find out about Wattpad?
I went on writing hiatus for a couple of years, but after reading Sonic comics by Archie (especially about Eclipse the Darkling), my brain kicked me for days with a huge story I had to get out. But given Sonic is "unknown" in my country, and I kinda wanted to start anew, I searched for writing sites. WP was the first in my search results, and the features charmed me, so here I am :-)
6. How long have you been using Wattpad?
I'm a member since October 2017, and it's a shame I didn't discover this place sooner :-D But then again, I might have missed meeting so many awesome people here.
7. Have there been moments that have inspired you to write?
My inspiration is random at best. I remember a song inspired me into writing "What type of Ultimate Lifeform are you?". For the story The Crossing Destiny, it was a picture of Priest Au featuring Priest Shadow and Demon Eclipse. For my newest book Golden Pear it was... I dunno XD
It's a story I started around the middle school, that I re-picked about half a year ago, so I no longer remember ^_^;
8. Does your culture affect your writing in anyway?
I suppose. I tend to use some "sayings" from my country and translate it into the story.
9. Are you a night owl or an early bird?
Definitely an early bird. I can't stay awake for too long. I'm a night owl only during Silvestr, and only because the fireworks would wake me up anyway XD
10. What are the problems you face when you are writing?
At the start, it's easy. I usually see how I want to end it, a few events in the middle, and the beginning is mostly done in a few days. I tend to have problems the closer I get to the end. I kinda "loose" the steam or feel like I'm dragging it, but there happens to be so much that I can still cover.
My other problem is Stating A, and then a couple of chapters later, I realize it turned into D. If I'm lucky, I can still go back to tinker with A to match D or vice-versa.
Then I have times when I can't figure out how to connect two scenes, so I just go and skip the needed parts to not stay in one place for too long ;-)
11. How much time do you take to write a chapter?
Depends on how long that chapter is, what emotions play a major role, how much I'm hyped, and how much I cry while writing it. It can be a few hours to a few days.
12. Do you research things before writing? If so, what are the sites you use (if you're willing to share)?
I often search for idioms at http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/ - For jokes, puns, or to spice up the writing. Then it's Wikipedia if I'm unsure how to call something in English. After that, it can be any other search result for grammar, synonyms, forceful verbs, and so on.
13. Do you listen to music while writing? Do you have any playlists for writing?
I usually listen to a lot of things. But 90%of the songs are the ones I found from AMVs XD But, I have a few songs I love to listen while writing emotional moments.
1) Nowhere to Run (Prison Hall) and Fading World (Imperial Tower) from Sonic Forces game
2) Insanity - Vocaloids (I think)
3) Speed Me Up - Wiz Khalifa and co from Sonic movie
I think it's obvious I like Sonic a lot XD
14. What does writing mean to you?
A way to make people happy. Real-world is enough crazy and dull at times, so books are the perfect way to take a breather and see fantastic places.
15. What's your happiest moment, in regards to writing?
Finishing the book because I know I did a good job. But it can be really sad as well -_-
16. What do your friends and family think about your writing?
My parents and older siblings know I write, and they are fine with it. I have only a handful of real-life friends, and only one knows I write. Otherwise, I don't share this a lot. I'm not a social person -_-
17. Is writing a part-time or full-time job for you?
Definitely, a part-time hobby, would be cool if it was full-time, but I think that could make me more stressed ^_^; I think I'll prefer it being a part-time hobby and perhaps a job in the future.
18. What do you do for a living?
I'm an IT, creating programs for PLC to control technology, gather data, and visualize it for people to control it with ease ;-)
19. Who is your favorite author?
I'm bad with names, so I can't remember most of the authors, but it's Jules Verne, Roger Zelezny, and František Kotleta (Czech Author).
20. What is your favorite book/s?
The Mysterious Island from Jules Verne I forced my oldest sister to read me before I could read, then I read it 3 times at least XD The Six Bullerby Children belongs to my favorites as well. Artemis Fowl series is also great, I just need to finish it ^_^;
21. Who is your favorite Wattpad Author?
I have a few - myromichaels theashesofthephoenix, michh_44 ShadowAceSonic , Jagermeanshunter, and awesomeSTG, among many others <3
22. What's your favorite Wattpad book?
From the mentioned authors in the order:
1) Otherworldly Beasts: Finding the Royals
2) Loving too much... to kill (Slice of life strips)
3) Boneca
4) Allice in Mysterious Land
5) Brothers In Arms (Open FF)
6) The Soul Collector
7) Ember Chasers
8) For more, see my list "I recommend" for books I checked/read and really enjoyed <3
23. How many books have you written?
I'll try to count the ones I finished... perhaps about 15? The long ones would be like five of them with many shorter stories (up to 30k words) and in both my mother language and English. I'm not exactly counting One-shots ;-) But all in all, perhaps 40-50 stories of any length with dozens I've never even started -_-
24. Which, in your opinion, is your best work?
I'll go here with NinRai and Golden Pear. I try to use everything I've learned about grammar and storytelling to provide the best experience I can give :-)
25. Which genre do you like writing?
My top choices are fantasy, action, adventure, and comedy. Golden Pear is a big out-of-box experience for me since it's teen fiction.
26. What do you think success is?
Brightening somebody's day :-)
27. Do you have any tips for other writers out there?
Yes. I've learned a few useful tips :-)
1) Keep your blurb short/er and to the point. Foreshadow the problem, mystery, and characters. If you need a question, use one. Too many can be offputting.
2) Check your grammar using online-tool/s. Mistakes happen, but not dozens of them ;-)
3) Don't end the chapter with "I'll upload the next part after XX reads and/or YY votes". That's basically using your story/readers as a hostage.
4) Don't start your book with "dozens" of A/N, aesthetics, Covers gallery, full cast, and so on. Two should do, and the rest can go at the end.
5) Even if it's a bit miss-and-hit, try Awards, Reviews, R4R, and/or Book clubs. I've gained a lot from all of it, except for R4R that kinda left me disappointed, but you may be lucky ;-)
6) Don't be afraid of criticism. Learn to cope with it and find a balance. Sometimes people are just mean, and sometimes they want to help you ;-)
28. How do you overcome your writer's block?
When I'm stuck, I try editing older chapters, skipping the problematic part, writing something different, watching a movie/TV series, relaxing, going on a trip (even a walk in the park is enough), or just taking a few days off. Playing with your cover or aesthetic/s can do a lot as well.
29. What kind of environment do you prefer to write in?
At home and by computer/laptop since I can't write on my phone at all XD I like to listen to music and without being distracted.
30. Are you an introvert, extrovert, or an ambivert?
Definitely an introvert XD
31. Would you like to say something to the readers and writers of our community?
Thank you for your time! You matter! No matter what, you are important, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise. Keep writing/reading if that is your passion.
32. Do you have any comments about this interview and interviewer?
It was fun to fill this in <3 Thank you for contacting me and offering me this opportunity <3
