Before We Start
Greetings, fair traveller. Welcome to the Worldbuilding Guide that's nowhere near unique but made with the goal to help you and others like you. Before we start, let me introduce myself as your primary mentor for the next couple parts.
I'm called a lot of things, but I mostly go by Caeran. Most people, because they can't be bothered to pronounce the second syllable, call me Cae. If you have zero interactions with me on this site and have just stumbled into this guide out of sheer luck, I am the author behind the high fantasy series, The Chronicles of Fantasilia, and its horde of spin-offs. I am also the one responsible for several other titles like Kolibrie, which won ONC, The White Thorns of Fire, The Piper of Mirchaek Trilogy, and the standalone novels, Scapegoat and Libelle.
As of writing this introduction, those are the works that you are going to find on my profile, @Exequinne. This would inflate as time goes by, and if there's one thing you need to remember about me, it's that when I write, I write. A lot.
Hence, this worldbuilding guide that's needlessly detailed. Hence, this manual meant to prepare me to build the places for COFU's sequel series. What, you think it's for you?
But enough about me and more about this guide. The whole course is divided into several units, such as:
1. Introduction to Worldbuilding
2. The Elements of Worldbuilding
3. Useful Development Questions
4. Tips on Execution
5. Handy Tools and Resources
Introduction to Worldbuilding
This section defines Worldbuilding as well as provides a rationale for studying/learning how to do it. From methods of worldbuilding to the different types of speculative worlds, this section will equip you in approaching the seemingly daunting task of creating a world straight from your imagination.
The Elements of Worldbuilding
This is probably the thiccest part of the guide. What makes up a world? How do these elements interact with your plot and your characters? Full of introductory articles and some tips in building these elements, this section will take up most of your time and, of course, this guide. In this section, we will look at the physical aspect of your world, as well as the social and the magical.
Useful Development Questions
This section contains some guide questions in building most of the elements discussed in the previous section. You are free to use these questions as some sort of template as you go to build more and more worlds.
Tips on Execution
So, you have put in the work and built your world from scratch. You have tons and tons of files, ideas, and, let's face it, some anxiety. Now, what? This section will help you in relaying the fruit of your hard work into the backbone of your story—the plot and the characters.
Handy Tools and Resources
This is exactly what the title says it is. It's just a collection of tools and resources you can look into should this guide prove inadequate. Some of these will also be the references used in the making of this guide.
How to Use This Guide
You just....read it? I mean, it's what you came here for, right?
Kidding aside, this guide will be serving its ultimate purpose if you use it to build a whole world off of it. You can also take parts of it, especially in the Elements of Worldbuilding section, and develop that specific part of your ongoing/unstarted story. Heck, you can also mince and pick, as long as you are sure this guide is being of help in your story.
How to not use this guide? Basically by being a butthole. If you've come here looking to pick on just about anything, then this is not the guide for you.
There will also be some quick exercises at the end of each article. These are meant to get you kickstarted into building your own world. You are more than welcome to tell me all about your progress, your bright ideas for your own world, and your learning for each article. Some of these articles will also feature some discussion questions. I suppose it's fun to participate in them as well. It makes writing this guide not lonely. xD
You are more than welcome to share this guide to your fellow worldbuilders. Help a friend out or two, amirite? It is my utmost hope for this guide to be able to do what it's created for: to help people.
So, without further ado, welcome to Worlds Asunder—a haphazardly-made worldbuilding guide full of my dark and inappropriate humor. This is a unique look at a burnt-out writer trying to make sense of the growing turmoil in their head. Get to meet interesting characters like Briam, the Last Brain Cell, and the Pink Alpaca mascot that is still yet to be named.
Warning: Proceeding will result in a torrent of ideas. The author is not to be held responsible for the added years of toil just to get through your writing queue. Why? Because they're suffering from a similar fate, and this is just their way of making you like them.
