Chapter Two
I nearly fell two more times while we went down the long hall. The lights were apparently motion activated, and the ones behind us turned off as we went farther away from them.
"Hey, Gray? What do you mean, a big surprise?"
Gray was silent for a moment.
"It's... hard to describe. There's a lot going on out there."
"Can you tell me one thing, then?"
"You seriously don't remember?"
"Nope."
"There's a lot of robots."
"Oh, right, you did mention something about that earlier. You said there were 'homicidal robots', right?"
"Exactly. These buggers kill on sight, so the key is to be sneaky. Most people aren't too good at that, which is why most of the city is dead."
"How many people are left?"
"Around a hundred."
I took in a small breath. Even though I had no memories, I still had a feeling that was barely anyone compared to what the population had been before.
"Why do you wear a mask all the time?"
"What makes you think I wear it all the time?"
"So... you only wear it when you go out?"
"Majority of the time, unless I'm with someone. Then I'll wear it the whole time."
"Are you worried about disease?"
"No. If I were, I wouldn't be helping you walk."
"Then why?"
"You know, you ask a lot of questions."
"Are you going to answer?"
"No."
I sighed.
"How much longer is this hallway?"
"It shouldn't be much more, at least until where I need to be. It should be right around here..."
He stretched his available arm out to touch the wall, running his hand alongside it as we walked (slowly, because I could still hardly move). After maybe three more steps, he stopped and started prying at a small crack in the wall with his open arm.
"Hey, kid, can you maybe lean against the wall or something? I'll need both of my hands for this."
I nodded, and he helped position me against the wall so that I wouldn't fall. My legs were shaky, and I nearly did fall, but I managed to stay up. Gray was busy pulling at the edge of the crack in the wall. A lot more working at the crack revealed that it was a door, because it swung open after another minute of effort.
"Woah," I marveled. "How'd you know that was there?"
"Because I've been through here before."
"Where's the door leading?"
"Outside."
He turned to face me, his eyes narrowed.
"I want you to understand something. When we go out there, death is very likely. You need to do exactly what I say if you want to live."
I nodded vigorously. I didn't really have anything to lose, but honestly, I didn't want to die right after waking up.
Gray walked toward me and hooked my arm around his shoulders for support again, and we both entered the door.
