Chapter Seven
A person stepped from the darkness. His skin was not dark or light, somewhere in between, and light colored hair in an undercut. Most notably were the goggles he wore, which were large and red tinted.
Gray tilted his head.
"Stop being ominous already, Theo. I brought a friend."
"Oh my god, you finally got one?"
"Shut up."
"Just screwing with you. Anyway, what's his name?"
I stepped forward.
"I don't know my name, but for now I'm Jason."
"How do you not know your name?"
"I don't know."
"Why?"
"I'll say it again, I don't know."
"That's pretty bizarre," Theo laughed. "We haven't seen a case like this for a couple years, huh, Gray?"
"I came to get a new mask. My old one was starting to run down."
Theo spun around on the heel of his shoe and started going to the back of the alleyway again.
"Follow me, my good sirs. I'll show you my workshop."
Gray rolled his eyes, but followed Theo anyway. I followed him. Theo led us to a barely visible steel door in the wall, which had been previously obscured in shadow.
"Hey Theo, why is your workshop here?"
"Robots, duh. If I did my work out in the open, I might as well be committing suicide. Those things make quick work of a person, let me tell you. I've seen it with my own eyes."
I still had another question. "Speaking of your eyes, why do you wear those goggles?"
He chuckled, then flashed a smile over his shoulder.
"Because they're stylish. Y'know, you ask a lot of questions, huh?"
"Well, since I don't remember anything, I'm trying to learn everything I can. Gray hasn't told me much since I met him."
"Aww, really? That's a shame. What has he told you, then? Anything about the robots?"
"He told me to stay away from them."
"Tch, he seems to be rather unfriendly today."
Gray sighed.
"I'm right here, you know."
"I'm aware,'' Theo said with a grin. "You should really open up to new people."
I was feeling rather awkward in this situation, so I asked him quickly if we could just go ahead and enter the workshop, to which he complied. I was hoping to learn more about the world's current situation, but neither seemed interested in telling me. How frustrating.
We entered Theo's workshop, and I was immediately greeted with a wave of the smells of gasoline, rubber, and metal.
"Welcome to my den! Waddya think?"
Gray coughed.
"It smells like a car died in here."
"I know, right! It adds personality!" Theo said enthusiastically.
"In here, I make masks for Brinks, and other contraptions for Humans, or just for fun. I don't have the materials to clean up the mess afterward, though, so it smells like a dead car. Not much I can do about it, sorry," he said with a shrug.
Gray sighed and pinched his brow.
"Can you just.. Get me a new mask? Please?"
"Oh wow, the edgiest of edgelords is asking politely? How unexpected!"
"Shut up, Theo."
He chuckled. "You want the mask to be the same as the old one?"
"Yes.""Alright, I'll get to work. I've already got the measurements, so I'll begin the process."
