Chapter One

First there was only darkness. Then light.

I blinked open my eyes, the light of a lamp on the ceiling shining down on my face. I tried to sit up, but my arms seemed too weak to push myself up. I collapsed onto the cold floor again, the lights above me shining directly in my eyes.

I turned my head to look at either side of me. I was in some kind of hallway, concrete walls and floors spanning to my left and right. There were more lights like the one above me going down the hallway for a bit, but beyond five lights was pure black. Strange.

I tried sitting up again, and with enough effort, I managed to get into a sitting position. In front of me was a stack of crates, each labeled with a "hazardous materials" symbol. There was no one in sight.

I had enough strength to move into a cross legged position. Just now, I realized I couldn't remember my name. I thought and thought, but I couldn't draw up anything useful. I was tempted to just go back to laying there.

Out of options and too weak to move, I shouted for help.

"Hello? Is anyone out there?"

I heard a creaking coming from the crates. I stopped shouting and looked at the crates again, this time more closely. My vision was blurred, and I could hardly see anything besides the crates despite the light. I blinked a couple times, and my vision cleared up.

"Hello?" I called.

My eyes had finally adjusted enough that I could see what, or more specifically who, had made the creak. On top of one of the crates sat a boy. He had silver hair with a few dark streaks coming from the top, which almost completely covered his eyes. I noticed he wore a mask with ventilators on the sides, and a lot of black. This guy was dressed in almost all black, except his white shirt.

"Nice to see you're alive," he said, his voice deeper than I thought it'd be. "You've been laying there for hours. I was starting to think you were dead."

I was awfully confused.

"Who're you?"

The boy looked away.

"I go by Gray right now."

"Is that your first name or your last name?"

"It's enough name. Get up, it's dangerous to be down here."

I didn't move. Gray tilted his head.

"I said get up. It's not safe here."

"Well, you see, I kinda can't get up."
"Try."

I tried to get into a kneeling position to get up, but I just fell over again.

"I can't get up. I'm too weak."

"Must've been a hell of a beating if you really can't get up."

"I look that bad, huh?"

"Here," he said as he hopped down from the crates, his boots making a loud thump against the concrete floor. "Take my hand."

He reached out to me, offering to help me up. I took the opportunity and grabbed his hand. His grip was firm and strong enough to pull me up. I nearly fell over again, but Gray caught me and hooked my arm around his shoulder.

"Gray, why are you helping me? I've never seen you before in my life. That I know of, at least."

"That's funny, because I've sure seen you before. I don't know where, but I know you. That's why I'm helping you."

I still had no memories of anything before I'd woken up, and I was very confused.

"Where are we?"

"You really lost all your memories, huh? Oh well. We're in a bunker in the middle of the city. I'm down here because I was looking for supplies. Surviving is tough when you've got homicidal robots all over the place. It coming back to you yet?"

"Nope. I still have nothing."

"So you've really forgotten everything?"

"I don't remember anything before I woke up."

"Well, you're in for a big surprise when we get out of here."
