— BEING ON ROAD AGAIN wasn't something that Zoe or Nate thought they would be doing again; since the farm was overrun and they were stuck on the road with a pregnant Lori for months until they found the prison, which they then lived for a long amount of time with no problems up until The Governor attacked them twice, the second time succeeding in doing so. It wasn't ideal, to get on the road again, especially with even more of them in the group than before, along with a baby, it was more dangerous than it had been before, and more scary since they truly had no where else to go and live — everyone was scared about not having a home again, yet everyone was hiding it for obvious reasons; they all had to act strong for one another, so everyone stayed confident in finding a new home. Nate hadn't thought much about where they would now live, since they were all together again, but since all he cared about was finally finding Zoe and the fact that she was safe with him, whereas Zoe couldn't stop thinking about where they were now going to live, especially since they had Judith and Carl with them and they had to make sure they were both going to be safe.
With the heat affecting them all, the whole group were glistening with sweat as they carried on walking down the empty road, never stopping and wanting to get as far away from Terminus as they could; Nate had his cross bow back after Carol had taken it back from the storage room, along with Daryl and many others belongings so close to one another so they could feel electricity ride through their arms, a feeling that they had both missed tremendously during their time apart, and feeling it again felt like they could both finally breathe again. Taking turns throughout their journey to find another home, by holding Judith so their arms wouldn't get too tired so they couldn't fight off any walkers, although the Grimes' held her more than everyone else, having believed she was dead for such a long time. When the night then finally began to fall, the group began to settle down and get some rest to start up again in the morning; Zoe was glad to finally be able to sit down, and especially, to clean Nate's wound on his stomach and make sure that it wasn't infected still.
With some of the group on the look out around the campfire, Zoe sat down Nate and sat cross legged in between his legs, giving him a knowing look as she sorted through a bag of medical supplies that Carol had given her, glad that she had been travelling with supplies as most of their own belongings had been taken by the people of Terminus, including Nate's ring, which Gareth still had in his belongings. Nate recognised the look on Zoe's face and instantly took his shirt off, allowing the girl to get a good look at his healing wound — she unwrapped the bandages around his stomach, Nate leaning forwards to help her do so, until his stomach was on show and Zoe could finally examine it. It wasn't as bad as the girl thought it would be, considering how often he had been hit and dragged around by the people of Terminus, it was beginning to heal, and Zoe couldn't keep the smirk off of her face at the sight of the scar tissue already beginning to form around the wound, the healing process finally moving along. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough to form a smile onto the girls face that he was finally getting better.
Nate watched his girls smile form onto her face, and he couldn't help but smile himself at the sight of her — since he had been reunited with Zoe, he hadn't seen her smile much since they found each other, the murders she committed still fresh in her mind, but right now, he was positive that it was not on her mind right now. He focused on her face as she pulled out some alcohol and cloths to coral the wound up, he watched the space between her eyebrows form a 'V' as she concentrated, having never paid so much attention to her eyebrows when she worked before; slowly raising his hand, Nate gently stroked the space in between her eyebrows, the girl pausing as he did so, her whole body gaining goosebumps at his touch. "You're so beautiful." Nate mumbled, as Zoe looked up at him instead of the wound on his stomach. This was the only moment where they had just a small amount of time to themselves without prying eyes, since Rick was off talking with Carol, and everyone else was doing their own things, except for Tara, who kept glancing over at the couple every now and then, which they did not notice.
Zoe's smile was was quick to return to her face at Nate's words, lifting up her own hand and wrapping it around his, lacing her fingers through his as he tightened his hold, not wanting to let go, ever again. The couple felt like they were in their own little bubble again as they looked at each other, smiling like they weren't surrounded by walkers, like they hadn't just escaped cannibals that tried to cook them and serve to eat; no matter what Nate and Zoe went through, they always managed to find their way back to one another in the end. "I've missed you so much." Zoe replied, not wanting to cry, but when she thought about what she had to go through when she didn't have him and the rest of her family with her, it hurt, it reminded her of what she had to do to survive, and how she had taken her first two lives from this world. Unknowingly, a tear drop began to slide down her cheek, breaking Nate's heart as he took his other hand and wiped the tear away with his thumb, knowing what she was thinking of, and hating that she blamed herself for what she had to do to survive.
"You did what you had to, Zo." Nate told the girl, as she drew circles on the back of his hand with her own thumb, liking the feeling of having his thumb glide down her cheek. "Those men.. They would've hurt other people, you stopped that, you saved yourself, and you shouldn't blame yourself for it." He said, as the girl looked down at the soil beneath her, before he lifted her chin up with his two fingers, getting her to look him in the eyes, "You're with me now, and I promise you that nothing bad will happen to you on my watch. You're my girl, I'd die for you, don't forget that." Nate finished, the two of them speaking in a hushed tone so everyone around the campfire wouldn't hear them; they were all doing their own things, anyway, so they didn't have to worry about anyone eavesdropping on their private conversation. They didn't care much, anyway, since everyone knew how the two acted with each other, and how much they loved one another.
Zoe sniffled, her tears watering as she looked at him, "I love you so much." She told him, now placing her own hand on his cheek, staring into his eyes with a love that overwhelmed them both. Being such a young age, Zoe and Nate never thought that they would have found such love in one another, they hadn't exactly liked each other when they first met one another, with Nate practically hidden by both Merle and Daryl, whom both seemed incredibly scary at the first sight, and Nate thought of Zoe as a goodie two shots who did everything Shane asked her to, a man in which he didn't like or respect. The thought of the two of them getting together used to seem crazy to them, being two completely different personalities and not even getting along, but now they couldn't even live without each other.
Nate pulled the girl close to him, pressing his lips against hers with such force that Zoe nearly fell onto him, she brought both hands out and landed them either side of Nate on the ground, her heart beat sped up when her lips met his, feeling like their bubble had shrunk, like they were the only people in the forest. People averted their eyes when they saw the couple kiss, giving them the privacy they deserved, but Nate and Zoe didn't exactly care, their kiss deepening the more time went on, unable to pull away from each other. Without each other, they felt incredible loneliness, like they were crippled without each other's company, or knowing that they were okay — Nate felt like his whole world had crashed and burned around him when he didn't know if the love of his life was alive or dead, and Zoe.. Zoe felt alone, she was alone, and she didn't have any hope for the future without him, but right now, none of that mattered anymore because they were back together again, and the world felt like it was built back up again.
Nate's hands began to slip down her face and down her arms, eventually resting on her hips as the kiss deepened, the two wanting things to go further, but also knowing that they weren't completely alone, and they couldn't, no matter how much they wanted to. So they pulled apart, Zoe resting her forehead on Nate's as she took deep breaths in, having forgotten how to breathe during the kiss, being so overwhelmed with her feelings.
"I love you." Nate whispered, stroking her face yet again as Zoe closed her eyes, leaning into his touch.
Zoe never wanted the moment to end, but they didn't have enough time to sit around and kiss, she needed to clean his wound and they needed to get some rest for the next day, a brand new day of searching for a new place to live; they needed their energy. "As much as I'd love to sit here and kiss, I need to clean your wound." She told him, as Nate groaned in annoyance, wanting to have all of the time in the world to kiss his girl. He leaned forwards once more and pecked the girl on the lips, smiling as he did so before pulling away, leaning up against the tree behind him so Zoe could finally work on his wound again. And she did just that, cleaning the surrounding area before dabbing some alcohol onto the actual wound, making sure that the area was all clean before wrapping his stomach back up, making sure that it was secure before helping him get his shirt back on. "All better." She said, smiling at him as he pulled his shirt down, smirking at the girl as she let her hands linger on his stomach longer than necessary.
"Thankyou." Nate said, when Zoe began to pack away the medical supplies back into Carol's bag, still incredibly glad that the woman had managed to scavenge so many things on the road, now they could clean up his wound every now and then to make sure that it wasn't getting infected and to make sure it was healing right.
Zoe shook her head at him, a smile still on her face, "Anything for you." She told him, zipping up Carol's bag after packing it back up, "I should get these back to Carol." The girl added, as Nate nodded, knowing that Carol would want her supplies back. "Get some rest, I'll be back soon." Zoe said, pushing up off of the ground and giving him a kiss on the forehead before carrying the bag over to where she believed the woman and her father to be talking to one another. It didn't take the girl long to find the two of them, finding them behind a few trees away from the campfire, talking about what went down in Terminus — once Carol saw Zoe approaching, she didn't waste any time in pulling her in for a hug, having not spoken to the young Grimes girl since they all reunited. Zoe gladly accepted the older woman's hug, smiling into her embrace due to how motherly it felt.
"It's been too long, Zoe." Carol sighed, having missed the girl a lot during her travels alone. Rick had informed her of everything that had happened to Zoe after the prison fell, and what she's had to do and how she's been dealing with it — although, she wasn't going to mention it, not wanting to over step her boundaries with the girl. Although, she could see it in Zoe's eyes how much it was haunting her, and she wanted nothing but to help her, "How've you been?" She asked, once the two pulled away and Rick had placed a comforting hand on his daughters back, knowing that it hadn't been easy for her since the prison fell. It hadn't been easy for anyone.
Zoe smiled at the woman, although it wasn't convincing in the slightest to Carol and Rick, "I should be asking you that." She answered, dodging the woman's question successfully, "I never thanked you for looking after Judith, I hate to think of what would've happened to her if you and Tyreese didn't find her." She added, as Rick nodded, agreeing with the girls words, appreciating Carol even more with every single second that passed.
Carol felt like she shouldn't be thanked or praised for doing the right thing, "You're all family, you shouldn't have to thank me." She said, as Zoe showed a genuine smile, making Carol smile herself. "How's Nate? Is his wound healing nicely?" The woman asked, finally taking the bag of medical supplies back from her.
"He's healing, that's all that matters." Zoe answered, as Carol smiled in response, glad that Nate was getting better over time thanks to Zoe and her skills. Carol remembers teaching her a fair amount of what Hershel had taught her, and she was glad about doing so, as the man had eventually been killed by The Governor when the prison eventually fell. Carol still couldn't believe that they lost Hershel, he was the best of them all, and him dying was heartbreaking, and a tremendous loss for them all. "I have you to thank for that." The girl smirked, as Carol rolled her eyes playfully, not liking to take the credit for Zoe's intelligence. "I should get back to Nate." The girl then trailed off, motioning back to where Nate was currently waiting for her to come back and finally get some sleep.
"Okay, sweetie." Carol said, giving the girl one last hug and watching Rick pull her in for a hug, also, pressing a long and gentle kiss to her forehead, closing his eyes as he did so, not wanting to let go. He hated himself for what his son and daughter had been through during their lives, they were young, they should be at school, living normal lives, not fighting walkers and humans alike to stay alive. When Zoe finally began to walk back over to her boyfriend, Rick sighed, watching his daughter leave with a longing look that Carol could read like a book. "She'll be okay. She's strong, just like her daddy." She said, as Rick let a small smile slip, knowing just how right Carol was.
Zoe arrived at where Nate was beginning to drift off, but slowly open ending his eyes and smiled when he saw his girl approaching him; the girl motioned for him to move forwards so she could slip behind him, Nate instantly doing so as Zoe slipped in behind him, the man then leaning back and lying in between Zoe's legs. The girl leaned back against the tree behind them as she began to drag her fingers through Nate's long and overgrown hair, hoping that it would help him get to sleep and have a good rest after everything he had been through in Terminus, she couldn't imagine nearly being butchered like a pig over a bathtub, it must be traumatising. Nate felt Zoe's fingers in his hair, and it sent him to sleep almost instantly, the safety and comfort of being in his girls arms giving him the green light to fall into a deep sleep.
And once Daryl glanced over at his younger brother asleep in Zoe's arms, he prayed that the two of them would never get split up again.
