( 𝟎𝟎𝟔 ) the bite mark
— ZOE FELT NUMB. THE FACT THAT the person she had considered her best friend throughout the whole apocalypse, and the end of the world was now dead, and she couldn't do anything about it. She died from a walker taking bite into neck, and no one could do anything to save her, as it all happened so fast; in a few hours, she will wake up as one of them, and she wouldn't be the same girl everyone knew anymore. She was heartbroken, along with Andrea. The following morning, those who had survived the catastrophe had helped clean up the camp and drag any dead bodies into two separate piles, one for their own people and one for the walkers who had attacked. Zoe hadn't even said thank you to Nate yet, but she would have to do that when she next saw him.
Zoe could never be thankful enough at the fact he had saved her life, if it wasn't for him, she would probably be one of them things right now, trying to eat her own family. Because of Nate, she was still alive and breathing, and not one of those things that their only thought was to eat. After Lori had spent the morning fixing the deep gash on Zoe's forehead and making sure that it didn't get infected, she made her way to Andrea, to try and convince her to let them take Amy's body away, before she turned into a walker, only Andrea didn't move a muscle when she tried to talk to her, still shocked that her sister had died in her arms.
After the group had reconciled away from Andrea, to assess what she may do next, Rick had finally made his way back to the group, after attempting himself. It seemed to be dangerous to go near, as she had pulled out a gun on Rick, but everyone knew she was hurting. She didn't mean it. "She still won't move?" Rick asked, as Lori sat back down next to Zoe and grabbed her hand. It had been a while since he had last tried to get through to her, and that had ended terribly, with a gun aimed at his head.
"She won't even talk to us." Lori sighed, looking towards Andrea in sorrow, knowing that she would be acting the same if any of her family had passed away due to a bite. "She's been there all night." She told Rick, looking up at him with a sad look.
"What do we do?" Zoe then asked her dad, as Lori placed her hand on her lower back, knowing that Zoe and Amy were close - she hated that her daughter had lost one of her closest friends, they had told each other everything. "We can't leave Amy like that, she doesn't deserve that." She told him - Amy was a good person, she didn't deserve what had happened to her, and she didn't deserve to come back as a walker and try to eat her own sister, she knew that Amy wouldn't have wanted that. She liked to think that she knew the girl well enough..
"We need to deal with it same as the others." Shane commented, looking towards Rick with a knowing look. Zoe slightly flared at her godfather, not liking how he had said it like it didn't matter what happened to Amy, and that they had to deal with her the same as the others. Amy was a sweet girl, and deserved the best. It made her think that Shane was loosing his humanity in this new world. Before the outbreak, Shane had been one of the most caring person that Zoe knew. He and Rick had the best friendship, and the two of them were the best cops that the town had ever seen - they were known as being the two best friends in the force, and Zoe loved that. Everything seemed different, now, and she didn't know what to think about it.
"I'll tell her how it is." Rick nodded to Shane, agreeing with his statement, before walking up the hill to where Andrea was currently sat over Amy's dead body, still unmoving since Lori had gone over earlier, and still unmoving since Amy had first passed away in the woman's arms. He hoped that the woman wouldn't pull a gun on anyone again, but he was wish was unanswered, as the woman did what he feared. "Andrea..." He began, only to get cut off by the cock of Andrea's gun and the fact that she had raised it up to Rick, threateningly, ushering him to go away and leave her with her sister, alone.
"I know how the safety works." Andrea said, coldly; looking at up Rick with a glare. She knew what she had to do, and she didn't need everyone rushing her - she was going to do this on her own time, not anyone else's. Rick was quick to apologise to her and quickly waltzed back over to the rest of the group with a worried look present on his face. Zoe felt bad for Andrea, Amy didn't deserve to die, especially like that - she just felt bad for Andrea, as now, she had no one. She had no family left.
Daryl, on the other hand, looked angry at the fact that Rick wasn't doing anything about Amy, as he knew the young girl would turn at any moment now, and it was dangerous. "You can't be serious." Daryl scoffed, as he watched Rick walking back to them, "Let that girl hamstring us? The dead girl's a time bomb." He said.
"What do you suggest?" Rick asked, turning to face him.
"Take the shot. Clean, in the brain from here." He said, pointing to his own forehead in example. "Hell, me and Nate can hit a turkey between the eyes from this distance." He stated.
Nate nodded his head in agreement as Lori was quick to disagree with the two brothers, "No." She snapped, "For God's sakes, just let her be." She said. She then placed her arm back over Zoe and allowed the girl to lean into her side, hoping to bring her some comfort. Her daughter was too quiet for her liking..
Rolling his eyes, Daryl huffed before pulling Nate away to get on with some serious work. They both walked towards Jim, to where he slapped him in the face to wake him up. "Wake up, Jimbo." Daryl said, bringing the man out of his daze, "We've got some work to do." He told him.
This was when Daryl and Nate began to drag one of their people's body towards the walker burn pile, but Glenn was quick to subject, holding his hand out in front of them to stop what they were currently doing. "What are you guys doing?" He asked them, "This is for geeks. Our people go over there." He said, pointing to where their own people were laid out.
"What's the difference?" Daryl scoffed, "They're all infected." He said, fed up with how the group were taking this attack - it was a waste of resources to bury them, and a clear waste of time, he just hated how he and his brother were the only people to see that.
"Our people go in that row over there. We don't burn them!" Glenn yelled, getting angry with the Dixon's. Zoe flinched at this, moving further into her mothers side, who clutched tighter onto her - Glenn didn't get angry often, so when he did, it upset her. "We bury them. Understand? Out people go in that row over there." He continued.
Huffing again, Daryl began to pick up the body, with the help from Morales, as Nate began to pick up another body of a walker on his own, knowing they needed to hurry up and get this all done. As Daryl dragged the body over to where Glenn was talking about, he spoke under his breath, "You reap what you sow." He said.
"You know what?" Morales snapped, as they dropped the body to the floor in anger, "Shut up, man." He was fed up with the Dixon's and their constant remarks.
"Ya'll left my brother for dead." Daryl shouted at him, knowing that Merle was probably dead with the amount of blood he had lost from cutting off his own hand. "You had this coming." He said, motioning towards all of the dead bodies that laid out on the floor around them. He knew that something bad would happen to them after what they did to Merle; karma always did it's work.
Shaking her head, Zoe stood up and walked away from her mother, knowing that she should be helping out instead of sitting and doing nothing to help the others. She headed towards Jim to help him with a dead body, as he seemed like he was struggling and no one was currently helping him. It was the least she could do, as she had been sat around and not helping for the last few hours; she knew that she should be resting due to her head injury, but she didn't want to, and her mom didn't protest either, knowing just how stubborn her daughter is. "Need help?" She asked him as she squatted down and got her hands on the walkers arms, ready to lift him up.
"Please." He nodded in appreciation, standing back up to get a better hold on the body, now knowing he had help from the young girl. Jim felt slightly bad as Zoe had been through a lot in the previous night, and the fact that she had a massive cut on her forehead from falling on a rock in attempt to get away from a walker, but, he couldn't do this on his own, he was too weak, especially after being bitten.
Zoe's eyes narrowed on his side as she looked down at him, where there looked to be fresh blood staining his shirt, like he was bleeding, "Are you bleeding?" She asked him, standing back up to get a better look at his side. She didn't understand why he wouldn't have mentioned it to the rest of the group, as they could have helped him, especially since they had bandages and medicine to help him out and relieve of the pain.
"I just got some on me from the bodies." He shrugged, trying to brush her off, knowing that she would tell her father if she found out what had happened to him. He placed his hands back on the dead walker, hoping that she would let it go, and not question him any further.
"That blood looks fresh." She told him, knowing the difference between fresh and old blood, she wasn't an idiot. It was when Jim started acting shifty, did she freeze slightly, knowing that he was holding something back.. Hiding something. "Were you bit?" She eventually asked, fearing that he would turn into one of those things.
"No." He answered immediately, shaking his head frantically at her, "I got scratched during the attack." He said. Jim stood up and placed his hands over his stomach, hiding it and hoping that she wouldn't see it any longer, only, she had already seen it, and she wasn't going to let it go - she was her father's daughter, after all..
If there was anything Zoe was good at, it was knowing when someone was clearly lying to her, "Jim." She warned, her voice shaking slightly in fear of what he was going to turn into in a few hours.
"I'm fine." Jim denied, shaking his head at her.
"Show me it, then." Zoe then told him, her fear coming through in her voice, she didn't want him to turn and kill someone else in the camp, what if that would be Carl, or her mom or dad, or even Nate? What would she do then? She had to do something. She couldn't just let him turn unexpectedly and kill someone else from their group, she didn't want anyone else to die.
Jim knew that she wasn't going to let this go, and instead of claiming he wasn't bit, he decided to try and convince her to not tell anyone about his condition. He leaned close to Zoe and whispered, "Please don't tell." He begged her, his eyes wide in fear at what was happening and what he knew was going to happen to him. They were going to kill him.
Zoe's eyes widened as she backed away from him quickly, feeling back for what she was about to do, but she had no choice in the matter - he could kill someone. "Dad! Shane!" She called, loudly, without even thinking about it first. Upon hearing the young girl scream their names, Rick and Shane were quick to react as Rick pushed Zoe behind him and Shane also stood protectively in front of her, both fearing that something had happened, or that Jim may have hurt her in some way. "A walker got him." She stuttered, "A walker bit Jim."
"I'm okay." Jim denied, shaking his head at the people now surrounding him because of Zoe's words. "I'm okay." He repeated.
"Show it to us." Nate snapped, stepping besides Daryl in a defensive motion, not liking that he had hidden this from the whole group. When Jim didn't make any move to show it to them, he repeated in a harsher tone, "Show it to us." He ordered.
Looking around at everyone, Jim panicked and grabbed a shovel from besides him, to hold it up and protect himself if he needed to, which he thought he would with the way that everyone was currently looking at him. Like he was a time bomb about to go off and kill everyone here.. "Easy, Jim." Shane wanted, holding his hands up as Rick, Daryl and him surrounded him to protect the others from the bitten man.
"Grab him!" Daryl eventually shouted when he saw his brother, Nate come up from behind him and pull his arms back, holding him so he can't move and the others can check him over for any bites to find out if Zoe was correct. This was when his brother checked Jim by pulling up his t-shirt, only to see a bite mark on his side, indicating that Zoe was in fact, correct, and Jim had been bitten..
Jim kept repeating "I'm okay." As everyone looked in horror and backed up away from him, looking at the clear walker bite on his side, that seemed to be getting worse.
Zoe slowly walked towards her dad and grabbed his arm, feeling comfort when she's near him; she couldn't bare to lose another one of the group to them things out there, but it looks like that's what's going to happen..
