Chapter 9
The rough forest floor of the Umber Forest was no match for the ryder wolves as they move swiftly and quickly through it. The Umber Forest was behind them within two days. They stopped to rest on the border between the forest and the Sprite Clan. While everyone rested, Karma stayed up, her nightmare from three nights ago, still haunting her. Every night it was the same thing when she closed her eyes and slept. A burning plain, the fire, and the figure that ended her. All of this was too much for her take. Karma was afraid to fall asleep, afraid to see the nightmare once more. Shaking her red hair from her face, she quietly stood up and walked among the Umber Forest. She dared not to venture too far from camp.
A twig snapped from behind her and Karma turned swiftly, unsheathing her dagger. She relaxed when she saw it was just Nector following her. He jumped back slightly at the sight of the dagger. "I'm sorry if I scared you, Creator." He said, raising his dainty hands in defense. Karma shook her head and sheathed her dagger.
"It's all right, you just frighten me. That's all." Nector nodded as he relaxed. He moved his head in a circular motion to look around the forest scenery around him.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" The sprite said.
"It is." Karma said.
"I never truly saw the Umber Forest before... but I heard it was beautiful, turns out they were right." He smiled as he and Karma walked around the forest floor. "If you don't mind me asking, Creator, why are you out here walking by yourself?" Karma chuckled under her breath.
"Truthfully?" She said. "I don't know. Fresh air, I guess?" She laughed softly, shortly followed by Nector.
"My people say those who walk by themselves often have something on their mind and can't seem to let it go." Karma sighed at the sprite's comment. "So, if you don't mind me asking again, what is on your mind? I'm sure someone like you doesn't have the world figured out just yet, do you?" Karma smiled and shook her head.
"I fear you're right," Karma admitted. "I don't have the world figured out and that's what is bothering me. If I'm the 'Creator', then why don't I have the world figured out? I created Arula, and yet, everything is falling apart before I can even prevent it." Nector nodded as if he understood. Watching a family of rabbits hop along their path, he said,
"The world is hard to figure out, but that shouldn't stop one from trying. Like a horse, for instants. If the horse keeps throwing you off and you never figure how it functions, how are you ever supposed to ride it without falling off again? Once you know how the horse functions, it can't throw you off. Being the Creator doesn't necessarily mean you have to have everything figured out, it simply means you must learn from your mistakes and you can change and make them better each time. One simply can't expect the first try to perfect. If it was, then what's the point in changing? In learning right from wrong? Better or worse? The world is a mystery, Creator, you must keep trying and figure out the horse before you get back on." Nector went quiet after that, letting his words sink in as Karma walked slower than him.
Soon they had made a complete circle and the campfire glowed brightly. When they made it fully back to camp Karma and Nector said their goodnights. "Thanks, by the way, that was very helpful." Karma said, settling down under her thin blankets. Nector smiled and nodded. The sprite went back to sleep in minutes, while Karma stayed up watching the flames dance in the air. With her mind cleared, she fell into deep, dreamless sleep.
