Chapter 5
Surprisingly, the mint leaves that Mika given Karma, worked. It felt like a wave of relief had washed over her. Sighing, she fell into her chair and sat there staring at the ceiling. For the time in years, Karma had never felt any better than she does now. It was like a weight has been lifted off her shoulders. Karma closed her eyes, taking a small nap. When she woke up from her nap, Karma felt a slight pressure on her chest. Looking down her eyes met the saber-tooth ferret's black eyes. She yelped and nearly fell out of her chair. Shari titled his head at her.
"What do you want?" Karma hissed at the ferret. Shari seemed unfazed by her tone and began to lick his paws. Karma rolled her eyes. Picking up the ferret by his scuff, which Shari wasn't too happy about, and placed him on the desk in front of her. "Now," she said. "I'm not going to repeat myself. What. Do. You. Want?" Shari simply blinked at her and began to explore her desk. "Great. Now I'm starting to go crazy!" Karma threw her hands up in defeat. She watched Shari with an annoyed looked as the ferret walked among the desk. He stopped by the book, sniffed it, then he arched his back, releasing a snake-like hiss.
Karma tilted her head, confused. The ferret then, jumped off the desk and landed on Karma's bed. The hairs on his back standing as high as grass. "Weird." Karma muttered, remembering a few months ago, Angel had done the same exacted thing. Which only made her wonder. "Come on," she said to the ferret. "Let's go find Omar."
Karma found Omar by the pond in the courtyard with his daughter, Hope. They both we busy feeding the ducks that swam around. Omar smiled Karma's way when she drew near. "I was wondering where he went." Omar said, motioning to Shari, who sat on Karma's shoulder. "Are you two finally getting along?"
"Not even close." Karma said, as Shari ran down her body and hobbled over to Omar. Shari made himself comfortable by laying behind Omar's neck, hidden in his white hair.
"So," Omar said, throwing breadcrumbs into the water and watching as the ducks pecked at the crumbs. "What finally brings you out of your room? Did Mika give you the mint leaves?" Karma nodded.
"Yes, Mika did, and they work like magic, let me tell you that. It's been an hour since I've had a headache." Karma said, proudly. "And what brings me out of my room is this..." Opening the flap to her satchel, Karma took out her book. As she did so, Shari hissed from behind Omar's hair. The hissing was so erupting, that it made Omar flinch.
"Oh! Goodness." Omar said, soothing the ferret.
"That's what I came to show you." Karma said, sitting crisscrossed on the ground. "A few months ago, Angel came up to me while I was drawing in this, and well, she growled at it. All her hairs stood on edge and she didn't even come close to me. And now, minutes ago, Shari did the same thing." Omar hummed in thought, clearly trying to come up with some conclusion. Then shaking his head, he said,
"I don't know what to think, honestly. But I do agree that it is weird, especially for one of your own creations to act that way."
"Do you think they're trying to tell us something?" Karma asked, remember last night how Angel whined at her while she drew in the book. Omar stroked his chin, shrugging.
"Could be, but what would they be trying to tell you?"
"I haven't the slightest idea."
----
"Goodness!" Mika said, when Omar had told her. "That is strange. What do you think it is?" In their room, Omar and Mika were on their small balcony. Omar leaned his back against the railing.
"Like I said, I have no clue." Omar said. They stood there in silence for bit longer. Mika finally broke the silence.
"You don't think something bad is going to come do you?" She asked. "Don't you remember what happened with Lester?" Omar gave her a hard stare.
"I do. But that was in the past. We shouldn't even be mentioning that name." Omar said.
"King Curlus has declared us elves to watch over the new Creator to make sure the past was not repeated. It is our job, well... your job."
"My job," Omar said, bluntly. "Is to help guide our Creator. There is only so much I can do. No one, and no creature could have predicted or stop that madman. Ce n'ètait qu'une question de temps."*1 Mika huffed, but didn't argue.
"I like this one much better, if it's any constellation." Mika said.
"We all do." Omar said, craning his neck to look at the stars. As predicted, Orin's Belt had completely disappeared and now the others were as well. Soon, all Arula will fall into darkness and there is nothing they can do about it. "As for the present," Omar continued and looked at his wife. "We must do what we can for Karma. Because as of right now, she needs us."
"You mean she needs, you, right?" Mika said and Omar rolled his eyes.
"Come on," he said, guiding her back into the room. "Let's go get some sleep. We can talk about this later."
"Fine," she said. "But sooner or later, she will need know, mia amata."*2
"Tutto in tempo utile,"*3 he said. "All in good time."
*1 "ce n'etait qu'une question de temps" ~ "it is only a matter of time"
*2 "Mia amata" ~ "my beloved"
