Chapter 16
"Well!" King Bosca said, holding a sparkling ruby in his chubby hand. "It looks like the Creator had set you all free!" The sprites cheered with joy at the thought of freedom. "If!" Continued the King. "She delivers me a hundred more of these baccras." Karma, who was already tired, looked at the King like he was crazy.
"My Lord, if I may," Karma said. "I am very tired, and I don't think I'll be able to make you another baccra, especially a hundred of them. It's all too much." King Bosca tilted his square head at Karma, as if he were deciding or not if he should kill her.
"Then I guess," he said. "The sprites will never be free until you give me what I want." Karma, along with all the other sprites flinched visibly. Karma glanced at the sprites around her, seeing their pale, sad faces, and their frail bodies. She sighed and nodded. Sitting crisscrossed on the cold cave floor, Karma opened her book to the page with the baccra drawn on it. Mummers and whispers filled the mine as the sprites looked at each other concerned.
Karma clear her throat and sucked in a tired breath. She began to recite the words and light started to fill out the mine. This time, no one screamed, and no one ran away. When the light finally died, blackness spread across Karma's vision and before she knew it, she blacked out on the cave floor.
----
The world around Karma seemed like a dream. As her eyes opened her sight became blurry and slowly started to cleared up. The room around her was dimly lit and the atmosphere was different. She slowly sat up and looked around her. The room was vaguely familiar and that's when she realized she was back in her room in Yunalla.
Omar sat in the wooden chair beside her, fast asleep. In the corner of the room Dagner leaned against the wall with a bottle of ale in his stubby little fingers. When he saw that Karma was awake, he smiled in his drunken way. "Hey there, lass, how you doing?" Karma put a hand up to her head, groaning.
"What happened?" She asked.
"Well," said the dwarf. "As far as I know, you managed to create a creature, who folks are calling a baccra? Weird name if you ask me, but anyway, you made the thing and it seemed to work, then King Bosca had you make a hundred more and you passed out in the attempt to do so. We were released from our 'holding cell' and a sprite had apparently carried you away from those mines and told us what you did. You were so tired, he had told us, that you were only able to make three more. And the King wanted to wait until you waken, but there was a riot and the King had no other choice but to set you, us, and the rest of the sprites free and here we are now."
Karma swallowed, the back of her throat was dry and itchy. "Here you go, lass," Dagner handed Karma his bottle of ale and she took it gracefully.
"Thanks," she said, dryly. "How long?"
"Only two days," Dagner nodded to Omar. "But he hasn't rested since we came back, so I suggest we don't wake him... tonight's the festival."
"The Festival of Light?" Dagner nodded.
"Yup. The only one." The dwarf took back his bottle and took a big swig of it. "Ah, nothing like a bottle of ale to get you through the day, eh Karma?" Karma laughed softly and settled back against the headboard, feeling much relieved.
----
Karma had fallen asleep again that day, but she didn't stay asleep for long. The second time she woke up Omar was out of the wooden chair and standing by the circle window. And since elves were so tall, Omar could see perfectly out it, which made Karma jealous. She was only five-three for a person of her age of nineteen. Omar turned his hazel gaze on Karma a small smile played on his lips. "Thought you'd never wake up," he said.
"Woke up once already, but I bet Dagner told you." Omar shook his head.
"When I woke up, he was gone. Probably ran out of ale and went to get some more." Omar stepped away from the window and sat down beside Karma on the bed. "How you feeling?"
"I could be worst," Karma joked, and Omar tilted his head to the side.
"You could," he answered back. "Did Dagner tell you what happened back at Kylum?" Karma nodded
"Yeah, he did." Omar stood up.
"Well then, that saves me the trouble of telling you," the white-headed elf smiled for a moment before it turned serious. "By the way, Queen Luska wishes to see once you're well."
"Tell her I'll meet her soon."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes," Karma nodded. "The festival is tonight, isn't? I wish to go there tonight and I'm sure the Queen will want to see me before then. So yes, I'm sure." Omar smiled.
"Alrighty then," he said. "I'll make sure to tell her and leave you to get dressed." When Omar left, Karma made sure she took a nice warm bath for she desperately needed it. And it felt nice indeed.
----
After the nice relaxing bath, Karma dressed herself in her usual outfit, tights, a lose tunic, and a fur vest with leather boots, and went down to see the Queen. Queen Luska sat on her thrown with pride. She sat up straighter from how Karma had last seen her and she no longer looked tired. "Ah, Creator!" She said. "It's good to see that you are well." Karma bowed when she reached the Queen.
"Thank you, Your Majesty," Karma said. "It was a difficult matter. And I'm glad it's all over." The Queen smiled sweetly down at Karma.
"As am I, Creator. Now my people can live in peace once more." Queen Luska reached up with her hand and petted the fowl that sat on top of the throne. "Tonight's the festival."
"So I've been told," Karma said. "I can't wait to see your beautiful village lit up." The Queen smile widen.
"It is a beautiful sight to see, Creator, you must tell me how much you did enjoy when the night is over."
"I will do that, Your Majesty." The Queen swished her hand at Karma.
"Please, call me Luska, after everything you've done for me, you deserve to call me such." Karma bowed her head.
"It will be my honor, Your- I mean, Luska." Luska smiled and took a small wooden box that sat beside her.
"Here," Luska said. "I wish to give you this. For all you had done for us." Karma took the box and opened it. Inside was a ring. The ring band was silver and on top sat an amber color rock. The rock, when you peered at it, had the reflection of the sun inside of it. "Now, when you come in the Sprite Clan and you wear that ring, all sprites will know what you had done for me and they will know that you are part of my kingdom." Karma closed the box and bowed deeply.
"Thank you, this gift is lovely, I will treasure it forever. I only wish I had something to give you."
"BAH!" Said the Queen. "You had already given me something, my dear. You gave my people freedom! And that's all I would ever want. Now, go and enjoy the festival. I don't wish for you to miss it."
Karma thanked the Queen once more and went out of the throne room and back to hers where she prepared herself for the festival that evening.
