August 5th National Oyster Day.

The oyster is a bivalve that filters water,

anywhere between 30-50 gallons a day,

so they are really good for the environment,

so in the ocean perhaps they should stay.

Oysters are alternating hermaphrodites, which means they can switch sexes periodically. Only 1 in 10,000 oysters contains a pearl. An oyster filters water through its gills and consume food like plankton in the process. They also help maintain the marine ecosystem, reducing excess algae and sediment that can lead to low oxygen levels causing other marine life to die. The oyster population of Chesapeake Bay were capable of filtering the entire volume of water in the bay in 3 days.
