August 26th Women's Equality Day.
It was on this day in 1920 when votes to women,
became part of the US Constitution,
it was a turning point in history,
at last they could make a telling contribution.
It took 72 years of campaigning,
before this day finally arrived,
now their voice could be heard in elections,
where previously they had been deprived.
Women in the United States were given the right to vote on August 26th 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified as law. In the UK the Representation of the People Act, in 1918, gave women over 30 the vote, in 1928 this was extended to all women over the age of 21.
