It is the foundation of the Hungarian state,

that is celebrated on this day,

Stephen was the first king they had,

from 1000 AD to 1038, when he passed away.

The day starts with raising the national flag,

and with food stalls on every street,

processions and a variety of concerts,

Holy Mass and finally a fireworks treat.

It was in 1000 AD that Stephen l, became King of Hungary and the founder of the Kingdom of Hungary, he passed away in 1038. Stephen was canonized on August 20th by Pope Gregory VII along with his son Saint Imre. The King's right hand, known as "the Holy Right" is kept as a relic, his body was mummified after his death but some years later the tomb was opened and the hand was removed.
