August 16th National Roller Coaster Day.

In the 17th century Russians froze water,

over a 70ft tall, ramp like, wooden structure,

riders would slide down on blocks of ice,

this was the origins of the roller coaster adventure.

Paris wanted to join in on this fun,

but their climate was much too warm,

so they put wheels on their sled on a track,

and the modern roller coaster was born.

The tallest roller coaster is the Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, it is 456ft tall and accelerates up to 128mph on 3.5 seconds, this ride also holds the record for longest drop at 418ft. It is estimated that 290 million people ride roller coasters each year. The loops in a roller coaster are known as clothoid loops and are responsible for the most G-forces. Wooden roller coasters very rarely go upside down while most steel ones do , wooden tracks are not as flexible as steel ones.
